Rentz Remodeling and Contracting - Laser straight walls

Rentz Remodeling and Contracting

After professional cleanup, the headache of dealing with an insurance adjuster, and the due diligence of meeting with multiple contractors to get bids on putting the basement back together, we went with Rentz Remodeling and Contracting. And wow. The difference between someone like Matt Rentz and other contractors we've dealt with has been night and day. A selfish part of me wants to keep this knowledge to myself, in case we need him again, but he's too good NOT to share. First of all, his bid was extremely fair. Since we were dealing with repairs and not an elective home remodel, we didn't have a ton of money set aside. Just what was left of insurance after a not-great cleanup crew charged us through the nose. Matt detailed out everything he would do to fix the basement, with line items for both labor and cost of materials. There was no guessing or having to ask for more detail; he came prepared with paperwork and was always extremely open about what everything cost. Secondly, he and his crew were incredibly polite and professional. In a pandemic, having new people in your house is always a little anxiety-provoking. The first thing they did when they arrived is put up a plastic zip door between the basement stairs and the rest of the house. And they never came through it into the main house. We worked out a system where he would text if he needed to ask any questions, which meant I could go anywhere in the house without worrying that I couldn't hear them if they needed anything. But for the most part, they came and went according to the needs of the work, and I didn't have to do much of anything at all. Thirdly, Matt and his crew are not just great contractors, but good guys. We had a problem with the hose discharge line for our sump pump freezing over during a cold snap, so my husband had temporarily removed it. Matt noticed and pointed out that he'd seen excess water leak through basement walls before, and texted with me about potential solutions we could try ourselves to keep it functional through the winter. Not an upsell--but just because he had knowledge he thought we could use. I'd recommend Rentz Remodeling and Contracting to anyone. (I've already given his name to a few friends.) And the next time we need anything done around the house, these guys are at the top of my list. A++, 10/10.

Kopke Remodeling & Design

Kopke Remodeling & Design

We hired Kopke for a kitchen remodel back in late 2019, which finally ended in early 2021 (COVID…read moredelays). There were a number of issues that would make me question whether or not to use them for another project. For instance, we decided on a thin, pull-out cabinet (for spices) next to a wall, with the microwave on the adjacent side. Not only was the wall going to block most of one side of the pull-out, but the microwave we finally decided on was larger than typical, so it stuck out further, basically blocking the majority of the other side of the pull-out, making that pull-out almost useless. Not being much of a blueprints person, I didn't realize this until actually seeing the cabinet in place, so we had Kopke change the pull-out to a normal cabinet. Nobody from Kopke brought this up as a possible issue during design, and seemed surprised when they saw it for themselves. There were a couple other similar issues where I surprised nobody mentioned anything...almost like they were just saying yes to anything we wanted, whether it was going to actually work or not. We also had a question regarding fees on a city permit. Our city bases their fees on overall project cost and we were being charged fees for a higher total. According to Kopke, they never included a total project cost when submitting the permit application, so I wanted to find out how the city came up with the total cost they were basing their fees on. Only after a couple weeks of going in circles, and finally getting a copy of the permit application from the city (Kopke did not have a copy), did I see there WAS an overall project cost on the application. After asking Kopke about it, they told me they did include the overall project cost after all. Kopke did end up refunding the difference, but this whole issue could have been avoided from the start...why did they tell me they don't include a total project cost on permit applications? But on a good note, I felt our project manager was bending over backwards at times to help in any way he could to resolve issues and get things done. And we appreciate him for it. Unfortunately, I found out he no longer works at Kopke. No idea what happened. I reached out to him after receiving a notice from Kopke about a final payment due. That's when he told me he no longer worked with the company. And nobody at Kopke bothered reaching out to let me know or put me in contact with a new PM. I also tried contacting our consultant and couldn't get a hold of her....tried emailing, texting and calling over a two-week period, nothing. Maybe she no longer works there either? There were a couple more issues, but I think this review is long enough to give you an overall idea of the company. I expect ups and downs on a remodel project of any kind, but if we ever do another remodel project, I think I'll look at other companies before returning to Kopke.

Phone call for final payment was the last I've heard from them. No thank you for using our company, etc. Not one person came to see the finished remodel. I love my new bathroom, but after so many discrepancies I will not complain that my sink should be bisque to match my toilet and not white.
