Even then, it was another 4 months before it actually worked. Of course the financing time started in September, which ment that we were paying for a system with no return on power savings for 6 months. Also, part of the financing was set up to be on an interest free cash advance credit card, however, because they do not accept credit cards the money was a direct cash advance, complete with a $500 cash advance fee. They had also offered to pay the minimum payment on the card until we recieved our tax credit for the system. This did not happen. I will say that the system is now working well, but it has been a long, painful experience to get here. Had I have known then what I know now, Utah Solar would never have been considered.

On the morning of Aug. 30, 2016, I received a call from a local number, so I answered it. It was an "urgent public service announcement" robocall telling me I was now qualified for a rate reduction as part of the American Recovery and Investment Act recently passed by congress (actually passed in 2009), and that as part of the US Renewable Energy Program, I was able to permanently save up to 60% on my electric bill while avoiding the 14% rate increase coming soon. While I listened to the robocall, I did a quick web search for the local number, which I discovered belonged to a locksmith, so I assumed the number had either been cloned or spoofed. At the end of the announcement, I pressed "1" to speak to an agent. A man came on the line and asked me the usual telemarketing questions, and I quickly learned this was a sales call for a solar company. I kept him on the line long enough to learn which company was behind this call (I'm on the national Do Not Call Registry, so I should never have been called in the first place), and it was Alpenglow Solar. To get that far, I had to provide personal information, so I made up a fictitious name and address. The agent told me that someone would call back to confirm the appointment. That call came 30-minutes later. I decided to come clean about what had transpired so as to not waste their time like they'd wasted mine. I told him the whole story, and that there was no reason to pursue me as a customer. He was quite nice on the phone and told me he appreciated the feedback, and that saved them from what would have been a 1-star review. I loathe the constant stream of mostly scam telemarketing calls I receive every day, and this one was no exception. Perhaps Alpenglow does a great job, but I'll never know. I choose to do business only with companies that don't ignore the Do Not Call Registry, don't use boiler room phone banks, and use only legitimate phone numbers.

Adding to the confusion is when some companies inundate your neighborhood with sales reps going door-to-door, a practice that--to me--is extremely irritating. Rather than choosing a finance company in the guise of a solar installer (more on that later), I searched through Yelp and found Redstone Solar, and I'm really glad I went with them. I had four different companies provide bids for my system. Chris (the owner of Redstone) surveyed my home and made the most easy-to-understand proposal for the system that would match my specifications. He knew I'd be getting Tesla Powerwall batteries as well as a Tesla automobile, so he made sure my system could provide all the capacity I'd need. He was extremely nice and explained the answers to all of my inquiries. That was very different from the other companies, most of which were an absolute waste of time because they were too busy convincing me to buy solar rather than answer my questions or design a proposal. (I'd already decided to get solar, which is why I asked for bids, not sales pitches.) And unlike one of the competitors, Redstone didn't require me to sign any documentation prior to receiving a bid. (That's just craziness.) The Redstone proposal was not the cheapest, but all of the equipment was name brand and after doing some research online, turned out to be some of the most efficient and longest-lasting solar products on the market. Knowing that solar is an investment, it made sense to go with value instead of choosing the cheapest bottom line. Chris and the other folks at Redstone were also the nicest, had the most prompt communication, and never said 'let me get back to you' to any of my questions, proving that they were super knowledgeable about the products and services they offered. All that--along with the 5-star rating on Yelp--helped me feel like I'd found the right company for the job. Another thing I liked was that Redstone is NOT a finance company masquerading as a solar company. Redstone only does solar; They don't try to sell you their own financing, which is something you'll run into a lot when shopping solar installers. Instead, Chris looked around and found that Key Bank had the best rates at the time, so that's where I got my home equity loan. The system was installed in September of 2016 just as the state was about to change the solar net metering rates. Chris knew I was in a hurry to get in under the wire, so he scheduled the installation over the course of a few days rather than waiting for one full day. That was extremely helpful. In the end I got a 6.5 kWp system with 20 Panasonic panels and a Solar Edge 7600 inverter. Redstone worked hard to get all the city permits approved and get Rocky Mountain Power to install the net meter (the unit that monitors how much power you send back to the grid.) They also worked with the roofing company I chose (because I got a new roof installed prior to the solar system) and provided me with all the state and federal forms I needed for the tax incentives. Initially I didn't see profoundly lower electricity bills from November through February (the most challenging months to garner power from your roof, at least in the northern hemisphere.) Still, my average $100 monthly bills were reduced to between $30 and $40 dollars. From March to May (it's getting sunny and the days are getting longer), my monthly bills have been $9.00. That's right: 900 pennies. I'm able to monitor my solar production online and via an app on my iPhone and iPad. It's a real gas to see how much energy I'm generating (a total of 3.9 MWh so far), how much CO2 I've kept out of the environment (6,027.55 lbs.), and how many equivalent trees I'd have to plant (151.82 trees) to make the same environmental difference. In the end I'm extremely satisfied with my solar system and the job it's doing for me, my neighbors (who use my extra solar power instead of fossil fuel-based energy), and the environment. Now that solar power is under attack from state and federal agencies, it's up to us--the citizens of the planet--to make the investments necessary for our world to be here for future generations. Redstone Solar made that process very easy, and I'm head-over-heels happy with the results.

I was placed on their list to have the work completed and was coordinating with their employee. To my knowledge everything was ordered for the job. I made several follow-up text and phone calls to the employee and never heard back from him. I found the company and was advised this employee did not work there anymore. Very poor communication within their company as I was never notified regarding his departure or if my job was transferred to another employee. I was advised someone would contact me to get things sorted out. I never heard from anyone. I phoned the next week and was assured by the end of the week someone would call me. I never heard from anybody. My advice would be to not conduct business with a company that does not know how to communicate or return a phone call.

A few months after our panels were installed, we developed a water leak into our loft ceiling, causing the dry wall to pucker in a few places This leak is directly under where the panels were installed I have been Trying dilligently to contact Ion about this leak & what we need to do to get it repaired ASAP before we start getting any more rain than we have had in the last couple of weeks. They keep you on hold for longer than 25 minutes. That is when I gave up waiting on hold two times. I left voicemail messages, pushed "1" to get a call back & no response to anything. This haso gone on for a couple of months now. Do I have to contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or the state Attorney General or Better Business Bureau to get a response? Just want to stop the water damage before the whole ceiling collapses in on us & it costs a fortune to repair! The spots have already gotten bigger! Our house is less than a year old, with a brand new roof that wasn't leaking before Ion Solar put up the panels.

Well that was true for a few years no matter A/C or Heater keeping house at 72 degrees. They didn't install panels that will have southern exposure all year long and go into shadow of the neighbors house at 3PM in the winter, so winter months energy output drops off early in the day. We were new here, a new housing development, were getting a lot of door-to-door solicitors, ION being one of them. We'd been thinking about solar for a few months so listened they were pretty smooth, so we signed on. They did say the panels were "USA made and Military Grade so they'll last a long time". Utility bill this month was over $12.00. Don't know if this is a trend They also didn't mention by installing Solar your Roof wind and hail damage deductible will go from $500 to $2500 with AAA!!!!!!!! After install we were connected to ENPHASE (get a monthly production email from them) , which supposedly monitors to system. Post sales service is sorely lacking. My advice is use a local company not one based hundreds of miles away, that is established locally with references, and get multiple Estimates, we learned the hard way!

Once you actually finally break down and make you thinking it's a good idea they just leave you in limbo unknown. No communication. If they finally do call you with some random "project manager" they will set up a date to install that means nothing to them at the crazy time of 6 am Then no call no show. But if you cancel on them or want to reschedule it's a $500 dollar fee. The best they will do is respond when they feel like it with a "we are trying to get you a couple months paid" on your 20 year loan.
