I checked into the Emergency Department around 8:30 PM on February 9, 2026. I was triaged and brought back to a room quickly, with genuine concern shown for my pain, discomfort, and overall well-being. When I arrived in the room, I was promptly greeted by RN Michelle Long. She was caring, compassionate, professional, and incredibly efficient. While I waited to see the physician, she made sure I was comfortable--offering water, providing the Wi-Fi password, and checking in to see if I needed anything else. I was seen by the physician shortly after and treated appropriately for my complaint. The entire visit took about two hours, which is truly impressive for an ER visit. Honestly speaking, there are a lot of FMP providers in places like the Philippines that are better maintained than this place. Plus they have far more polite staff. First is the parking. There is almost nothing near, and the spaces are crazy small. I was pushing someone up an enclosed walkway from the hospital to an adjoining parking deck. The incline is ridiculous. If you're at all injured or elderly you're not pushing anyone up this thing. If it were a private hospital, the feds would probably sue them for having this thing. Inside, a disabled senior citizen, Marine, in a wheelchair was in front of me when I was there. As we were coming up to a hallway intersection, some guy who worked there stopped in the entrance of our hallway to the cross hallway, blocking the entrance In other words, we could not go into the next hallway and turn the corner because this guy was in the way. He stopped to talk to a coworker and didn't care we were right there. It took about a second for me to realize what he was doing, but before I could ask him to move, the Marine (Semper Fi) in the wheelchair in front of me did. The dude and his colleague looked at us like we were aliens. Bro... Don't be so rude and disrespectful. Another employee I spoke to, I asked where the blue elevator was. He held up his arms and shrugged with an "I don't know" gesture, then turned away. I mean, you have people here who lost limbs to keep you free. Stop treating them like they're a rock in your shoe. Every time my father is admitted into this hospital my family has to hold our breath and cross our fingers that my father will make it out. The way the nurses in the SICU and MICU treat patients and their families is mind boggling. No human, and especially no veteran deserves to be treated the way the staff treats these veterans. The cleanliness or lack there of alone should get this place shut down for an investigation. Their emergency department sucks. I went in with an active kidney stone and a pain level of 8. They left me to suffer in the waiting room for over an hour and a half. I finally left. The entire time I was there, no one was called back from the waiting area, but staff members were milling around, talking and laughing. This is no way to treat vets. read more

This is truly a great place to receive health care. Facilities include a cardiac ICU and medical intensive care unit in addition to a variety of specialty and subspecialty clinics. The cafeteria, gift shop, and coffee stand are great amenities for visiting family members. I am still dealing, seemingly non-strop, with some issues from combat, and there is no better care anywhere than at the Durham NC VAMC. As pro-active and thorough as the Duke Medical Center, which is located across the street and a close partner working with the VAMC. My numerous surgeries at the VA have all been done by Duke surgeons, including heads of some Duke clinics. ......I have been seen in more than a dozen clinics, and perhaps many more, at the VAMC over 20+ years. I am almost always seen quickly at or very close to my appointment times, which I cannot say for my visits to Duke clinics (which still provide great care).......Many posts here are utterly bizarre, dissing the VAMC because some individual displeased them as if that has anything to do with the VAMC. Or for equally trivial matters that have nothing to do with the VAMC. ......As for getting through on the phone, it is typically easy and requires no more than a few minutes on hold. But can take a while at times. Given the age of Vietnam era vets, the VAMC deals with a great many people seeking care. Yet does so thoroughly, pro-actively, courteously and as professionally as you will find anywhere in the nation (I have Duke with which to compare it). read more

One of the best things about this hospital is that it is across the street from Duke. This is a perfect example of why you don't want the government involved in your healthcare. The place is run down and not that well kept. The staff was fairly friendly, but not so helpful. Just like any other government agency, they close for every random holiday ever made. That doesn't mean the doors close, but most of their services are put on hold. So you better hope you can wait. The best thing about this place is that they didn't tow my dad's vehicle. He pulled up having a heart attack. He parked under the flag pole. Security eventually moved it for him, I believe three days later. I thought that was great. My dad is fine now, thanks for asking. He ended up going to duke to have surgery. He was here for a couple of weeks and then went to Duke. read more

I called the Podiatry Dept to ask about getting an appointment for orthotics; the man who answered the phone asked, "What are orthotics? I work in Optometry!" Anyway, he suggested that I go to the ER at the VA to get a Podiatry referral, so I did. It really didn't seem practical to refer me to the ER--the place that you go for emergencies--to get a referral, but I happened to be in the area. ‍ I went to the ER on 24 Jul 2020 @ approximately 1530hrs. Parking was easy & close to the door. The 2 ladies who greeted me there were very friendly & cheerful while they took my temperature, asked if I had any signs of COVID-19, or if I'd been around anyone who was symptomatic. Then, they sent me back to the ER, where I was greeted by two very professional men who wore tags under their nametags, showing that they were Air Force & Marine Veterans, respectively. They quickly & politely signed me in & asked me to have a seat in the waiting room until I was called back. (There's a separate waiting room for untested people who have COVID-19 symptoms.) Within 10 minutes, I was in an exam room in the back & the Nurse told me that the Physician would be right with me. She was absolutely right---in less than 5 minutes, Dr. Roshni Dhoot came into the room. Dr. Dhoot examined my feet, agreed with what my civilian Podiatrist told me, and quickly got me a referral to the Podiatry Clinic. As a former Oral Surgery Technician & an Operating Room/Infection Control Nurse, I probably know a little bit more about infection control than those who don't work in hospitals. I'm no expert but, based on experience, I would say that the ER, the exam room, & the waiting room appeared very clean; everyone was wearing a mask, and they used alcohol hand sanitizer frequently. Every single person at the Durham VA was extremely kind, professional, polite, helpful, and had a very positive attitude---I thought that they treated me, an Air Force Veteran of 22 years, with great respect & consideration. And no, I'm not a retired Colonel or General; I worked my way up from an E-1! I really wish that I'd brought a pen & paper with me so that I could've written down their names & thanked each of those VA Hospital employees by name! Yes, the VA Hospital is older, as are a lot of military facilities, and it could use a facelift; but, I don't think that the appearance of it affected the great care that I received. As to that, I'd just have to advise that we vote ONLY for Politicians who have a measurable track record of truly caring our military and Veterans. Unfortunately, improvements can take awhile within the Federal Government--and, that's an understatement! Thank you to those who took such outstanding care of me last week: you made a very positive impression on me! If I lived closer to the VA Hospital, I'd be honored to work there, caring for those who fought for our Country!! read more

Dealing with the Durham VA Dental department is a pain in the butt. They never answer the phone. It takes three phone calls and then they seem upset that you have interrupted while they are with another patient. Communication is terrible. I'm getting outside community care and the VA girl running oral surgery appointments is inefficient....says films my Cary dentist sent via email never arrived. I followed up with Cary and they we're in fact sent. VA Dental customer service is terrible! read more

This VA is a bureaucratic nightmare. Just finding the right person to talk to is like walking through some never ending maze. I can't tell you how many times I get transferred then sent to a voicemail. It's like talking into a black hole. Once I finally got through to a real person I was told it would take up to 14 business days to get assigned to a primary care provider. ‍I imagine it will take several more months before I can actually see an orthopedist. If you are lucky enough to receive a call then don't expect any kind of customer service. Most people who work at this facility do not care about patients let alone veterans. My primary provider has always seen me at my scheduled appts in a timely manner however any referral seems to be lost in massive red tape or there is no follow through. Most referrals require over a 6 month wait due to pending approval and various paperwork. All medical concerns that cannot wait months for an appt are sent to the Emergency Room. All veterans do NOT have the ability to see a local provider! This veteran loses access to specialist such as neurology if I change primary care locations. I am told if I choose a local provider I would not be able to be referred back to Duke Neurology so I am forced to continue to make the long drive and suffer through the lengthy process. The parking is so bad you really need someone to take you and drop you at the door and come back. As you walk to the door be prepared for all the smoking outside of the ER and the "Parking Police". With a history of multiple C-spine surgeries, 33 years of active duty and two tours of combat perhaps suggesting the VA assign case-managers to provide referral assistance and continuity of care is too much to ask? Regardless of all the hype the VA remains broken. I would gladly serve again and I am not bitter just wanted to provide an honest opinion of my experiences. read more

Then off to my room, constantly at 85 degrees, nurses showed up on there schedule not yours, pain meds at least two hours late, never changed bed linens, no help getting into or out of bed, food service wouldn't put it where you could reach, left me trapped in a chair for 2 hrs would not answer call Button I called hospital on my cell and asked operator to help me they called my nurse who finally showed up. Miss diagnosed, twice. They never made any of the follow up appointments they said they would, on any time I have gone here. Almost blinded me even after telling them I was allergic to penicillin, I was prescribed penicillin based antibiotic eye drops. Literally every single time you call the appointment line, every singe time, the minimum wait will be 45 minutes. That is the minimum. Rude staff. I waited for 2 hours in the lobby before breaking down and asking why I wasn't seen only to discover they never printed my charts and sent my paperwork back to the doctor. Parking is horrible. Tiny, cramped, and feels unclean. The prescription window is the biggest joke here. They say go wait for your name to appear on the screen... yeah, I can't see the screen. I have been going there for 5 years now and I have always received good service. yeah sometimes the appointment runs late but not often, my wife goes to Duke primary and we have late appointment more often there than the VA. The staff is usually great once in a while you may run in to someone having a bad day and like anyplace they have a few that just are shitty at their jobs and don't want to be there, but in general for a government run faculty the do a great job. read more

My one and a half year at the Durham VA experience is one of praise for the professional Staff and their nurses. The administrative employees demonstrate an attitude of indifference and lack of concern to the patient's needs. My experience with appointment request is meet with a standard four week out date. Received a call that the clinic canceled my appointment and to call for another appointment. Again a four week future date summing up to a two Month opportunity for care. My thought is that the administrative employees have established mediocracy as a standard for their job performance. This reflects on the proficiency of the Hospital Director. I have been going here for 5 years. I have been treated regularly for primary care, cardiology, hem/onc, rheumatology, liver clinic, diabetes, lived in their hospice(ClC), had open heart surgery, ablation, stents, biopsies, eye glasses and taken many ambulance rides to the ER. This is the best VA hospital in the nation and teaming with Duke MD, PhD doctors who are extraordinary and really care for you personally. There are a few obdurate clerks but the staff take care of their attitude quickly. I know you will receive the BEST care possible as I have! Sure issues arise but patient advocates solve the problem with integrity and not just covering for federal employees. read more

I have been using the Durham VA for the last fifteen years. I receive ongoing treatment for a neuromuscular condition and the related conditions from the disease. The MDs, RNs, and associated therapist are too notch card providers. I've been seen by some of the best in the region. I also had open spine surgery and the staff were very professional and caring. The ER is HORRIBLE. ER waiting times are long no matter which hospital you go to, however we are talking 8-12 your wait times. The administration staff in MOST (not all) clinics act like they are doing YOU a favor by them being at their desks. The hospital is caring and overall very good compared to other VA hospitals but the administration staff need CUSTOMER service training. read more

I have been a patient of the VA for several years and have been in many departments. I have found the staff to be friendly, very professional, and interested in my health. The facility is clean, and I have been well pleased with the services the VA has provided. I try to be signed in at least a half hour prior to my appointment. The Durham VA is a very busy hospital. Sure waits may be long sometimes but I would highly recommend the Durham VA. To be honest, I don't believe there isn't a hospital who isn't busy and run behind. All patients are different and needs may require more attention. If you go to the hospital across the road, they receive the same types of complaints, can't get appointment when we want them, delays and on and on. I recently underwent a TKR on my right side. During the morning of the surgery, I was seen by the anesthesiologist who was very informative, concerned and polite. The surgeon stopped by to check in momentary and then I was taken to the surgery room. Every step of the way I was treated with kind words and like a patient should be. I am an OIF/ OEF female veteran that served 25 years in the military. This VA hospital is the absolute worst. I transferred here from the Washington , DC to this VA ahosputal in 2017. I went to the women's clinic and I cannot get a simple referral to mental health. The quality of patient care here is sub standard and a change in management and patient care is absolutely necessary! I've been waiting since since 21 May 2018, for the mental health referral and they can't get it right. It is now 7 June 2018, and I'm still dealing with the ridiculous beuracracy. I have had some poor experiences with clerical/administrative people at this facility. I have left messages for a return call 2-3 times with no response or call back. However, I went to the emergency room at around 1:30 AM with a very bad kidney stone and the staff, nurses and doctor were very attentive. I had various tests, CT scan, etc. to verify it was a kidney stone (which I already knew, but they have to confirm). They gave ne an IV and Toradol which did relieve the pain fairly quickly. I was back home resting by 6:30 AM and I live in North Raleigh. All in all I was very pleased with my treatment. read more

I'm giving this place 3 stars because the direct staff are very friendly and helpful. It's almost impossible to schedule an appointment here. It took a few weeks for us to get one, then they scheduled it for the wrong month. It took about a month to get that sorted out. The parking here is the absolute worse. If you are disabled and visiting (like my grandmother) it is torture to walk through the labyrinth that is this hospital to find the correct elevator to take you to the floor you need. The elevator color system is helpful, but it's still a long walk. There weren't any wheelchairs available at the moment for my grandmother to use, so she had to walk. My grandfather's social worker said that she'll get him his veteran ID made, but failed to tell us that she wouldn't be able to do it because she went on vacation the day after telling us this. Sadly, this is the closest VA Hospital to us, so we'll continue going here. The absolute best thing is, the direct staff (people you actually see and speak to), are amazing. read more

Went to the VA Durham Hospital with a serious ivy rash not feeling well to say the least . They got me in quickly and the doc checked me out and wrote me some meds went to the Pharmacy and was back in my car in the parking deck all with in a hour . I moved from Arizona to North Carolina over a month ago. Since then the incompetent people in enrollment and eligibility have not been able to give me an appointment for a primary care doctor. All I get is being. transferred around put on hold, disconnected never called back. I don't know why I cant get an appointment. This orginizatiion is disgraceful. PT told him they would make a referral for Orthro and to call his Dr. Last week he was told " it is in the works"they would call him back after July 4. Went through this past week and they looked at my old CPAP machine and gave me a new one and was very nice and ordered my supplies to send to my house. I did have to go up the chain to find out the manufacturer of my implant of my rubber meshing. There is no record as far as the manufacturer in my file but they have books that they store this information in and will get back with me on this. read more

I went there 6.6.2016 , after driving 80 miles had a real hard time with parking . Two small garages and a tiny parking lot in front . It took me about 20 mins . to park . And the worse thing is I had to walk forever all day , next day I was so sore as I am 58 and have had extreme pain for back related to service injury . I found that about 80 % of staff were very good , the ladies that can hardly fit in there chairs behind the counter are not very nice and wood like to be elsewhere. Dr. Wilson I have my doubts if he will help me at all , he was too busy to really listen to me as he loves his computer . He really did a weak look at my problems , about two days later they called and wanted me to make a appt. with physical therapy , that is so stupid I can hardly walk and I really stiffen up , deep,deep pain that is crippling . read more
