Security staff stated to me directly that the ADA does not apply to Duke. I rely on ADA‑protected accommodations to safely and effectively manage post‑concussion syndrome and autonomic‑dysfunction-related limitations. I requested police assistance three separate times in an effort to stop the ongoing harm. I was forced into an avoidable medical episode because security objected to my lawful accommodation: working my service dog off‑leash so she could safely and effectively perform the medical tasks she is trained to do. My dog is fully qualified and consistently demonstrates stable, professional behavior in all environments; this is documented on my YouTube channel at youtube.com/@biblicaldogs Security also informed me of new restrictions on what items could enter the building. My everyday tools -- a pocket knife and Halt 2 -- were taken from me. I asked that these items be held so I could retrieve them after my appointment, because with my brain injury I did not have the cognitive bandwidth to return to my car and navigate back to the neurology building. That request was denied, and I permanently lost those tools. Following the incident, I experienced an autonomic dysfunction episode. My cognitive capacity was reduced to the point that I could not fully interpret my service dog's alerts, and I subsequently fell. A service dog team depends on the handler's ability to cooperate with the dog; that ability had been compromised by the earlier misconduct. She assisted me in recovering from the fall as trained, but I was two hours from home, alone, and a dog cannot drive. Despite my efforts to stabilize, my ability to safely drive myself home was impaired. I go to the hospital to improve my functioning, not to have it harmed. Because of the lawlessness and disregard for patient safety demonstrated by security, I filed ADA complaints at both the state and federal levels, notified Senator Tillis's office, the VA and my care has been rerouted to Wakefield. read more

Visited Duke as a family member needed an MRI - overall, very pleased with the care and the kindness we experienced with the staff that we interacted with. The radiology nurses were wonderful and funny, too! The procedure was explained and while being in a metal tube for close to an hour is not enjoyable, the staff really eased the process. The only complaint is the parking is hard to come by, we were on the 5th floor of the parking garage. It was mobbed! And, wow, it is a confusing facility. Not only huge, but there are three separate radiology areas and of course, we went to the wrong one. A lot of walking, hard to find a parking spot and overall confusion were the drawbacks. However, regarding the cars received and the help of a few kind strangers, we got to the appropriate location. Side note - gift shop was so cute and a great place to grab a water and a protein bar while you sit in the waiting areas. read more

It is surprisingly okay to visit a family-member here. My first visit I was guided through by another family member. But I saw there are little QR codes on many hallway junctions which can help you use your phone for guidance. On my second visit I was unsure, so an employee guided me to where I thought I could find my way further. It is quite a maze. read more

I had to be admitted for 6 weeks for prenatal care with a very sensitive issue. The nurses on the fifth floor are impeccable. They're attentive, knowledgeable, and very willing to help. The 12 doctors with MFM are also some of the top. I'm thankful that they supported me. read more

The staff and service is excellent. I hate the parking garage and price to park 9/10 of the disabled spots were taken by people without a tag or placard. The lights don't work correctly to tell if a space is taken or not. The entrance to the elevator did not open with the wave system and makes it rough for someone with a walker or wheelchair to get in or out. Luckily I had someone to hold the door for me. The light works but the doors didn't move. The restrooms are clean. There is no one at the information desk on the second floor coming from the walkway and the directory gives physician names and not departments. Mychart was down and I did not know where I was going. The staff and care made up for the headaches. They are all so friendly and helpful. read more

It can be a little difficult to get where you need to be but it is definitely worth the extra effort. I go to the speciality clinic regularly and the valet service is so valuable even though there's a fee. Plenty wheelchairs available & parking decks available for a fee x 2. The Doctors- nurses & support staff professionals and kind -Duke offers satellite services but all the care cohesively is maintained in the Duke my Chart. My words can't do justice to the WORLD CLASS medical services at Duke. They saved my life three times. - OUTSTANDING MANAGEMENT - I have never seen a better managed hospital. The doctors are well coordinated. Every employee is empowered, down to the information desk attendee that arranged for me to get second COVID test so I wouldn't have to return to other building due to testing error (I had only asked for directions). Their operation is a machine and I have no worries about mistakes or uncoordinated decisions between docs. That said, they don't let strict process override common sense. They apply rules specific to your situation with intent for best, compassionate care. - WORLD CLASS DOCTORS - Duke attracts the best talent. This has built a reputation that draws patients that fly in from all around the world for treatment. I won't go into details but my personal results, and my recovery time was unbelievably miraculous, a true testament to their superb expertise and work. - PERSONABLE DOCTORS - I have not met a doctor or nurse that wasn't compassionate. They all take time to discuss all your questions. They also respond very quickly to requests and answer the phone, so you are not always waiting for call back from nurse. Like most medical institutions they use an online MyChart platform to share medical information, treatment history and a messaging platform. This is an amazing resource between doctors and patients and they have responded to my questions very quickly. - ABOVE AVERAGE HOSPITAL FOOD - Don't expect fine cuisine, but they offer best hospital food that I have ever had. They also have a Subway and Chick-Fil-A on-site if you are able to eat it (or at least for your visitors). read more

The expertise is great. Nurses and doctors with explanations is wonderful. I was a visitor while my sister was managed there in the hospital due to a chemo reaction over the weekend. I found that the cafeteria employees including cashiers as well as information desk employees and some security individuals were not friendly very abrupt and not nice at all. I am a very patient individual who works in the healthcare field for a large hospital system in the south and this would never be tolerated. It gives Duke a very poor perception from an individual outsider. I have had care at Duke in the past with my son due to congenital heart disease so I am familiar with the facility. They respond well to trauma but if its not life threatening they can be cold and uncompassionate. also they rush things along and care more about their patient load than what the individual patients needs are. Not my top pick Ive had better experiences at UNC and What is now UNC Rex. I had one specific experience with a doctor was very condescending towards my family. So much so that we ended up leaving because we did not feel comfortable being served by someone who was not showing care. I will say that if you're a patient at this hospital, pay close attention and ask all the questions that you need for yourself and your loved ones. Spent 2 nights with my friend. She had a very big procedure. The nurses responded well with pain meds for every complaint. There were no assistance offered for help with basic things such as mouth care or bathing or bathroom hygiene. I guess they assumed family was responsible although it was never discussed. I was told to walk around the corner hallway to fill her drinking cup when she needed water.The bedside chair was quite uncomfortable and the valet service...I sat outside exhausted for 55 minutes waiting on my car after paying $28. I stayed 3 days for monitoring during the start of a new drug. I wasn't sick or even feeling poorly so this doesn't have that bias. Having worked in hospitals for 39 years, here's my take: Pros: -The nurses, and probably other staff, are very poorly paid. They deserve more for their level of education and expertise. -Everyone was cheerful and helpful--couldn't have been nicer. Gave me time to ask all the questions I had and took an interest in me personally. -I'm vegetarian and the food was the best I've ever had in a hospital. The fresh fruit was ripe, salads were fresh, a lot of entree choices from Amy's brand which were fine, and a lot of choices overall. -My room was clean and "newer" and had mult levels of lighting and heat/AC that I could control Cons: -The bed was the worst I've ever encountered and I backpack. It very noisily inflated in random sections every 30 secs and then immediately deflated, dropping different body parts precipitously. Finally it quit inflating at all from the chest down and just did head and shoulders over and over. I eventually got up and slept in the little easy chair beside the bed. The nurses said everyone complains and the only way to get around the inflation cycling and noise is to unplug the bed. The 2nd night I did that but then my hips were on hard plastic and there was light padding everywhere else which left me in a V shape. This is a place for sick people to get better. If everyone complains about the beds seems like they should replace them. I feel sorry for all the people stuck in those beds for mult days. I hope their pain meds take care of them. -The toilet paper is single ply. You need a big handful to do the job -The large auto-feed paper towel dispenser is 6" above the sink faucet so it's hard to get in there to wash your hands and when you do, your shoulder sets off the feeder and the towel unfolds into the running water. -There's a lot of light coming through the closed blinds leading to the hall. Bring a sleep mask. Summary: If the bed had even been only OK I'd have given 5 stars because the rest is just being cheap and bad engineering but the bed is a serious problem. read more

My mother has been treated at Duke hospital a number of times in the past 5 years. The care has generally been pretty good. But as my mother is elderly, she now needs help getting into medicaid so we can get her into a skilled nursing facility or home. The social worker at Duke hospital told multiple family members that she was working on getting my mother into medicaid. She told us the process had been started. It turns out it was all lies. DO NOT BELIEVE THE DUKE HOSPITAL SOCIAL WORKERS. They just lie to you to make you go away. They take advantage of people who don't know the system - and don't know how it works. (In fairness - this review is about DukeHealth more than the actual hospital.) Have had 'Duke Select' insurance for 30 years & have been healthy (few encounters) during that time. Have experienced a few health issues this past year. Noticed that I leave many encounters feeling frustrated & belittled. Staff (with some exceptions) seem bored or otherwise make you feel processed. (To be expected, I suppose - but their moral seems decidedly low.) Most providers are curt, talk at you, are poor listeners & some have surprisingly little common sense. Arrogant. Not interested in your opinion & often don't hide their contempt. Notes in MyChart frequently assert things that are disingenuous - flat-out untrue - and clearly added to spin mistakes & cover any potential liability. This has happened a number of times - it stands out. I feel this in particular suggests a culture lacking integrity. Now that I need healthcare, I will switch insurance during open enrollment so that I'm no longer stuck at Duke Healthcare. read more

I can't speak much on the care because I couldn't even get that far! everyone I spoke to at the birthing center on Erwin and the obgyn clinics, from the admin to clinical staff were horrible and just were not helpful, transferring me all around to different parts of the hospital, hanging up the phones on me, a bunch of loud personal conversations and laughing going on and not much interest in patient care, I can only imagine the care and bedside manner in person. I definitely wouldn't trust them to care for me after seeing the way they behave! I didn't even consider this hospital for giving birth but my mom asked me to consider due to my high risk pregnancy, telling me how "their the best hospital in the Carolina's and how people come from all over to receive care" which I can say I would have to disagree by what I witnessed. The way I see it it's their loss, I have A1 federal insurance and they lost a potential opportunity to offer care and get paid well to do so! Idc how great a hospitals reputation is or how good someone can do their job if their a crappy human being because you can't be a good clinician or admin staff if your lack empathy and basic human decency, that matters most! Duke really needs to retrain their staff on how to engage with humans, maybe offer a course on compassion and empathy in the health care setting. I work in healthcare so I'm very aware how stressful and taxing it can be, however the Patients should never see that! Healthcare is still a business at the end of the day so healthcare workers losing patients or not doing what it takes to retain or acquire new patients are healthcare workers that aren't beneficial to the bottom line! do better in vetting people Duke! I've been a patient at Duke for over 10 years and they are a very good facility. I see all of my specialists here and have been very lucky with all of the doctors I've seen that I've seen outpatient at the medical pavilion. I also have had cancer previously and underwent surgery through the cancer institute and the doctors I had, Dr Sanziana Roman and Dr Julie Sosa, both in thoracic surgery as I had thyroid cancer, were amazing. I did find that the doctors and some staff try to push that, thyroid cancer is the good cancer and that patients should be happy they have that type, however, it's not great to have any cancer and having lost my entire thyroid has impacted my life tremendously and will never be the same again. The hospital is great and the floors I've been on for different things have been very good. Not a huge fan of the way they run the ER, triaging out of the waiting room, however, considering how many come to Duke for treatment, there are only so many ways to do things with such limited space. Overall, Duke University is my preferred hospital in this area and the only other I'd go to would be Rex. Love Duke a lot. read more

SURGICAL DEPT. : im not one to write reviews like this but i had surgery earlier today and it was the gentlest experience i've ever had. i'm terrified of IVs (yea , who isn't ? but imagine the normal amount of fear and times that by like at least 75 and thats me) the nurses could tell this and handled me so well. they called the IV team to do an ultrasound on my veins so they wouldn't have tighten the the IV tourniquet so much because they visibly saw how scared i was. the fact that this team saw my anxiety and genuinely cared about how i felt was just amazing. they handled the situation so well i've never had a more positive experience with IV insertion and care. i know that this might be an expectation to some people , but this team was over the top. very kind , kept me calm (which isn't easy to do) , and made sure i was comfortable. Dr Jang was my surgeon and he did amazing as well. parking can be annoying just due to lack of space / parking garages but they do have valet. other than that one complaint about parking which has nothing to do with the team , i really was taken care of. i've been nervous about this surgery for so long and you guys made it a very smooth and caring process. thank you very much Dr Jang and Duke surgical team. read more

Dr. Vidwan was very polite, caring, ginuine, and understanding, she listened and cared for me as a patient and didn't talk over me and tell me my symptoms didn't make sense like my local neurologist. Been here 12.5 hours in emergency. We should have left but he is really sick. The people are nice but it is taking too long. I will never come here again. People come in the ambulance and the EMT's roll them in a wheelchair to the waiting room! People leave because of the wait. I saw a man prostrate asleep on the floor right here in the emergency department. Sad situation here. I saw a girl they put everything in her arm and gave her a bag of fluids right out here in the open area! Really! Find another place to go if YOU think you have an emergency. UPDATE: after 14hour wait, an awesome PA had a diagnosis and Rx! It was destined to have her as the attendant...had to wait for her shift. Corn. Starch. Syrup. Sugar Yes the nurse has taken the brunt of my complaints in which all of them do not deserve. But I am in a hospitality not healt care. But if I provide the disregard of my customers need. I would not have been a private chef for the past 17 years or a corporate chef or club chef for 20 years I know you are in a hospital but it is still a service job. During covid I had a land line phone conversation with a Dermatologist in Wake Forest and my insurance company was billed 119 I was billed 29.82 which is more than the 20 per cent copay Very pricey phone conversation. I called billing and had to make it short because I was afraid they will charge me another 119 The Doctor has nothing to do I was told that it is Duke Hospital that does the billing. I'm not even giving a star. They did a hip surgery on mother in law. Transferred her from Roanoke Va claim she would Recover fine. Well she didnt and they keeping her medicated up and her bones are breaking. However they won't transfer her to hospice because the Medicare isn't paying and Medicaid won't cover because she's out of state. The docs that took her case retired. So new doc is some Stupid chick and she is literally baby talking to my mother in law. It's ridiculous and taking about getting her to hospice but insurance isn't paying. I do not recommend especially if your from out of state and you have a loved one because the commute is bad and staying in hotels and only two people at a time can go up. Then you have to return tag and get new person a tag and lines are Long. This place is a shit hole and no one has any amount Of compassion. They are rude and just seem to be there. read more

I am currently a patient here. I was transferred from Virginia because of A Fib and there were no rooms available for a cardiac patient in Virginia. So far my experience here has been very good. The staff, physicians, nursing, etc. have been very kind and very attentive. I am scheduled to have bypass surgery this coming week and although I am very nervous about it I feel like I could not be in better hands than the surgeons and staff here at Duke. UPDATE:I had my bipass and it has been quite the experience. The Mefical and nursing staff has been great. The food however has sucked but thankfully my wife was able to bring me decent food the cafeteria and the Paneras located in the hospital. I hope to be able to go home today. read more

Told "If you don't stop yelling at me then I'm not going to help you", all when I'm trying to explain to this lady how bad it hurts and ask questions. I, repeatedly, receive the highest quality of care at Duke! I have a rare lung disease and cancer, so I have had plenty of opportunities to to be treated by them. The doctors that I have been in contact with are absolutely top notch. The nurses are amazing, kind, and competent! All of the other staff from the food preparers to the housekeeping staff are kind and courteous. I have had nothing but positive experiences at Duke!
