This hotel is just as described on the website - old.
I realize the ancient nature and charm of a city like Venice. Thus, the buildings are old etc. that being said - this hotel left much to be desired.
Our check-in went smoothly enough though my mother and I arrived from the airport at around 10am and had to wait until 2pm for our room - they were booked up and tired though we were we went off exploring the city for a while.
When we returned at 2pm our room was ready. They showed us to a room at the foot of the stairs that was the size of a broom closet. Literally there wasn't enough space for both my mom and my bags to fit and for us to walk around the bed without climbing on it. This was mildly annoying but no biggie as the room was clean.
I had a brief confrontation with the concierge over twin beds as our travel agent messed up and booked us a double instead but they split the beds apart and we moved on after the front desk told me it would be another 45 minutes before they would come split the beds and I told him we were done waiting to do it NOW.
I soon realized that this was the ONLY room under stairs like Harry Potter and, due to it's location it meant we could hear constant stomping above our heads at all hours of the day as people walked up and down the five flights of stairs to their rooms. It sounded like elephants on parade and to make it worse, I am a very light sleeper by nature.
We didn't complain the first night thinking it was no big deal but by the next morning - going on two full days with only about 6 hours sleep total and with the rude concierge still being clipped with me I demanded another room. At first he was unhelpful and said none we available but when I demanded to know how much my mother and I were paying a night for our broom closet (we weren't sure as we paid a large total package price through an agent in the US and the website is cryptic) he wouldn't tell me at first but finally relented and said 250 euros. That's A LOT of money. I demanded to speak to a manager and was told he was off and would be in the next morning. I explained that wouldn't do me any good tonight and asked them to either call him or find someone else as the current concierge was rude and unhelpful. I explained that he was condescending and patronizing and I did not like it.
After all this - and getting much nastier than I originally wanted at the front desk in front of other guests - he finally offered us another room that was much larger (2x the size of our first room) but what was shown online for the price anyway and what we thought we were getting to start with, located on the 5th floor. We moved and the next two days were much more enjoyable and less noisy though still we could hear sounds.
This was a bad start to a much looked forward to vacation to Italy for both my mother and myself.
Goods: clean hotel, central location to shopping, food, the grand canal and San Marco square. Nice lobby. Pretty blown murano glass fixtures throughout. Water taxi brought us directly to the front lobby entrance and was able to unload our bags.
Bads: tiny rooms, outdated electrical sockets which sparked and made funny sounds, air was not controllable in the room, showers were old and leaked in both rooms, "free breakfast" was really just yogurt some muffins and coffee or juice. Rather disappointing. On a trip to Greece two years ago, our included breakfast was full service with pastries, eggs, fruits, etc. for a similar nightly room price. Rude service and the *free* wi-fi didn't work in any of the rooms because the signal was so weak so I had to go sit in the lobby to check email or look online on my iPad.
Overall we still enjoyed our trip to Venice. But we wouldn't stay here again if we ever came back. read more
