When you enter, you're always greeted by the friendly woman who owns the store. It's everything you'd expect from a New England packy- dim lighting, smells like Grandma's basement, cramped with little floor space, but still fully stocked with liquors, wine, and beer. A lot of the beer is refrigerated, which is always great. If I ask for nippers, they always ask if I'd like them cold. They go above and beyond to make sure I have everything I want before I leave- even if it means digging around for something that hasn't yet been stocked. The prices are comparable with other small-business package stores, so if you're traveling in the area, I very much recommend K&S for your liquor needs.

I was running an errand nearby and noticed a bright yellow food truck on Prospect Street in…read moredowntown Hartford near Front Street and the back of the Wadsworth and City Hall. As I approached, I saw it was called ToGo Spice Kitchen and the first thing I noticed on the menu was Jollof Rice, which is a flavorful and saucy rice dish often associated with Western Africa cuisine. According to ToGo's IG page, they specialize in Togolese cuisine specifically. The guy working the truck, who I assumed was the owner, was super nice and funny. After asking some questions, I settled on the Jollof rice with lamb, and a combo of the tomato and mango habanero sauce. It also comes with a small salad and Fried Plantains. I could have chosen chicken, beef or salmon instead of lamb. I'm not the most experienced with West African cooking, but I've had it. The Jollof rice had good texture and very good flavor. I loved the sauce. The lamb was bone in. And the meaty parts really hugged the bones. The meat was chewy in a way I don't Iove, but in a way that seems true to other West African food I've had. Seems like maybe that's just the style. The small portions of Salad and Fried Plaintains were both good. I liked the ToGo Spice Kitchen Truck. I probably wouldn't get the lamb again, but I liked everything else and the owner is the type of guy you root for. 4.25 Stars

Definitely recommend this food truck for a delicious flavor experience.

I specifically ordered this as a birthday treat and added the Happy Birthday sticker and bow because I wanted it to look special. After I ordered and paid, I was told they were out of the boxes and asked if putting it in a bag was okay. I said yes, not really thinking much of it at the time. What I was handed was a cookie in a paper bag, and the chocolate was literally melting and soaking through the bag. If you sell single cookies and offer customers the option to add birthday gift packaging, you should have appropriate packaging available--or at minimum offer another box that will safely hold the cookie. Putting a warm, chocolate-covered cookie into a paper bag that it immediately starts melting through is not an acceptable substitute.

I've wanted to visit Drum Roll Coffee Roasters for a while, but I'm usually only in Old…read moreWethersfield ("OW") before or after they open. Drum Roll is predominantly a coffee roaster, but they sell some merch as well. They may serve beverages on site, but that doesn't seem to be a focus of the website or store and I was in and out when I visited. I did not see any seating. I bought two things at the small, thin store in OW, and I also recently had cold brew made with Drum Roll coffee at Bake Market in Rocky Hill. The following things stood out. First, the person who helped me, who I assume was the owner, was conversant in coffee terms that matter to me. Sometimes I talk to a store employee about single origins or roast levels, and they don't know what to say. The person who helped me knows coffee and they had a good selection. Second, my Ethiopian Single Origin Beans I used for a home pour over, turned iced coffee, were obviously fresh roasted. You could taste the roast. A coffee can actually be too fresh roasted, and based upon experience, I think some of the listed tasting notes will be more prominent in a few more days. I usually wait 7 to 10 days after the roast date before using coffee. For this reason, putting the roast date on the bag might be a good move. Third, the coffee bag is a high end bag. I buy a lot of craft coffee over the internet. Some places try to have useful bags, and some places try to save money on bags. Drum Roll has a ziplock style seal that makes keeping coffee fresh easier. Their bag is on par with other top places. Fourth, Drum Roll serves canned cold coffee. I'm not sure if they rotate their offerings. I bought one snap chilled Papua New Guinea Cold Brew can. It was very smooth and above average for a canned coffee product. Fifth, I don't remember the exact price, but I remember thinking the price was reasonable. I would definitely buy more bags if I happened to be in OW when I needed coffee beans and Drum Roll is open. Sixth, Bake Market's cold brew made with Drum Roll coffee was rich and smooth. It had a darker flavor and roast profile than I normally I drink, but it was well executed for that style. Based upon all of this, I recommend Drum Roll for people who make coffee at home. While I have my own grinder at home and buy whole beans, they even asked if I wanted the beans ground. 4.5 Stars
