Cannoli, Tiramisu, 3 kinds of mousse, eclairs, frosted or plain brownies (are you bold enough to get a brownie with peanut butter buttercream frosting?), cream horns, rum rolls, an amazing peach concoction of sweet dough soaked with peach juice and rum and filled with vanilla pudding (!), Sfogliatelle, Zeppol, cream puffs, NY style cheesecake, fruit slices (peaches and strawberries with whipped cream layers and frosting), pasticiotti, cappuccino slices, Amaretto Squares, Limoncello Cake Slices and Chocolate Brownie Cake Slices. And there's more - miniature pastries, Cheese danish, apple, raspberry and blueberry turnovers, Cranberry Orange scones, blueberry scones, chive scones, and roasted red pepper scones, lemon and cherry squares. Get the picture? And I haven't mentioned their Italian cookies, 25 cake varieties, cupcakes, cake pops, pizza slices, sandwiches and stuffed breads. The truth is, this place is fantastic and is clearly in the top ten percent of Italian bakeries we've visited. We picked up an assortment of cake slices, a croissant, a scone, and a donut yesterday. You'll find it on that horrendous bottlenecked stretch of Route 4 in Farmington- just look for the bright red umbrellas. It seemed a little smaller than the other locations, but there is a staircase to a separate dining room on the second floor above the sales counter and showroom. You'll find all the high-quality products that HBC is famous for - breads, loaves, rolls, dozens of pastries and sweet treats, plus sandwiches. It's quite a nice menu and you can out together an excellent varied meal for dining in or take-out. We went the takeout route and picked up two gorgeous sandwiches -a prosciutto de parma (Thinly sliced Prosciutto Di Parma, provolone cheese, and arugula on a homemade croissant) and a Caprese (loaded with slabs of Fresh mozzarella, sliced tomato, and fresh basil on ciabatta drizzled with vinegar). Their sandwiches are excellent and a pretty decent value at under ten dollars. PRO TIP Don't even dare thinking about parking on busy Route 4, there is none, but go around the corner on High Street and you'll find plenty of parking in a lot behind the building.

They have storess in South Windsor, East Windsor, Manchester, Vernon, and Tolland, plus dozens of Big Y, Highland Park, Geissler, Price Chopper, and Shop Rite supermarkets. Their modern and very comfortable store interiors have the feel of an upscale bakery or café, so it's a great place to sit and unwind with homemade bagels, muffins, wraps, salads, lattes, frozen drinks, and more. The bagel choices have all your favorites (and a few more) like Blueberry, Cinnamon Raisin, Egg, Everything, Onion, Plain, Poppy, Pumpernickel, Sesame, Whole Wheat, etc. The bagels are pretty big -the one we had with cream cheese and smoked salmon last night was five inches across, so a half was enough. And speaking of stops, we stopped in around 3:15 yesterday afternoon, and even though they close at 4, the place was packed with regulars. It kind of reminded me of a town hall meeting in there! Yes, it is most definitely a local neighborhood favorite. We picked up a bag of their donut holes and some of those gargantuan donuts. The chocolate donut holes and cherry cake donuts are so delicious they really need to be classified as a controlled substance. King Donuts is a great example of a local donut success story, as opposed to another pin on the map for the national corporate donut juggernaut. All Hail the King.

Let me say this as clearly as I can, the donuts and crullers we just picked up were FANTASTIC, as fresh as could be, and 100% wonderful. We picked up a variety of cake donuts, traditional Yeast-Raised Donuts, cruller sticks, and donut holes the other day, and we were 1,000% happy with their taste, size, and freshness. I loved their Cherry Cake donut! It was so big I really should have split it with my wife but didn't. They have 28 flavors on their website, baked in small batches with rotating flavors. Prices start at $2.49 for a single classic glazed donut, then go to $2.99 for a filled donut (jelly, custard or fruit), and then $3.25 for Specialties.
