So by proxy I have a mental list of such establishments that I keep a eye out for (most recently, Voodoo Doughnuts) and Duck Doughnuts is one of them. Little did I know, until just a week ago, that there is a location in Winchester. The morning of my visit could not have been more perfect for a first timer. Rain was drizzling, but not heavy. The sky was overcast. The temps were low, but not frigid. And that Shenandoah Valley wind was just the right amount of chilling. I went in with high expectations. Here's what happened. I began to peruse the menu and soon realized that I would be making many a visit before obtaining a full understanding of all they have to offer. So I settled on the blueberry pancake and the holiday sprinkle (seasonal) with a cup of coffee (only $5.99). What I then learned is that each doughnut is 1) a cake doughnut (just for those who favor/don't favor this type of doughnut), 2) is made to order (as in the toppings and/or stuffing), and 3) they all come out warm! The coffee is a medium roast, but on the darker side. Just a FYI. I sat down at the window bench and looked out on the dismay day that was about to get exponentially better. The doughnuts, for the short period of time they lasted, were a work of art (be sure to check out my photos). They paired well with the coffee and left me wishing I had made the bigger commitment of ordering half a dozen. But there will be more visits in the future. Until then, I recommend you stop in to pick up a few (or more) and know that you can also order ahead of time (via online).

You can smell the hot oil. When you order, you can't see the machine or the topping bar. What we saw first, at 11:45am on a Thursday was the female owner and her two daughters, we presume, because they were calling her mother and talking about the schedule. We were not greeted. We ordered 2 donuts, paid $5.xx and then the girl walked away. They didn't advise where to pickup or if she'd be back or what. So we walked around the wall and saw it was a glass wall, and you can see the machine. We thought the dough would be dropped fresh, and we would watch production. No, she grabbed what happen to be 2 donuts sitting in the hopper. I was thinking, aren't they supposed to be hot? I said maybe they are.. let's wait and see. So they iced them and topped them, put into a single box and handed us them at the end. We walked out on the balcony, opened the box and they were not hot. They were not "HOT" as advertised. I understand if I'm getting a dozen and I'm obviously taking them somewhere, but when two people walk in and order just two, is it safe to assume they are going to eat them now? If we ordered 3 would they have only made 1 more? Or all 3? I don't understand. We took a few bites and realized they aren't special, they weren't hot and the works and/or owners do not care. Period. There is no second chance and I will make sure to tell everyone about it. 1 bad experience will snowball and that's not what you want. But when your staple product revolves around hot donuts, you serve hot donuts. I won't be back and if anyone asks, I'll tell. Other than that it's not worth bringing up.

The fries didn't look like much, but they were crinkle-cut ribbons of crispy deliciousness. My dad ate the side of coleslaw, and liked it. I keep thinking about the mac and cheese balls that I did not order... The one fail was the donut, which didn't have much flavor, and was topped with sugar, which I thought was unnecessary. The size of the cronut is huge compared to the Dominique Ansel one. Freddy's is the size of your hand where the other is a quarter size smaller. The cronut at Freddy's is also cheaper going at $4.25 versus $7.75 at Dominique Ansel. They come in glaze drizzle, chocolate and vanilla drizzle, maple drizzle and French toast. Cronuts not available or don't feel like a big cronut...ask if they have the cronut bites. They come in a set of three and you can get either glaze drizzle or cinnamon sugar. The size of their classic and specialty donuts are huge. We are talking easily can be sharable (if you want to). Currently the pricing of their donuts are: $1.95 house/ $2.75 specialty/$2.75 cake/ $3.25 monster filled. They have quite the creative list of flavors. No gluten free options though. Their donuts are light and flavorful. It's not overly sweet at all and well balanced. By their size you get your bang for your buck. If you want to get your choosing of flavors, it's better to go at the start of the day. Later in the day you chance that they could be sold out on flavors - especially if they are busy that day. The donuts are packed in whimsical boxes that are colorful and say "You Deserve A Donut." They also have drinks for purchase but we didn't grab any- maybe next time. On the wall they also have cute donut themed shirts with popular cartoons and characters like Bluey, Pikachu and Deadpool. There is limited parking around the shop. Otherwise plenty of street parking. We took our donuts to go but you can also dine there in front of the store where they have picnic tables. The building looks like it might have been a service gas station in the past. It's decorated with a snake mural and they also have neat drawings inside on their chalkboard menu.
