I had the most pleasant experience with an employee there. If memory serves me right, I believe her nametag said "Piper". We both shared that we were full-time students at MSU. She was kind enough to ask me how my morning was starting and wished me a good day. I don't feel like this type of service is as typical anymore. Anyway, She was lovely and I believe my coffee tasted better after she made it. I would typically visit Starbucks down the street on the way to class, but thinking i'll reconsider following this experience! I ordered a dozen Glazed and a dozen mixed donuts for my clients. I grabbed an Orange Juice and a Large Spicy Sausage Cheese Kolache. It was delicious. The service, though, was the real standout--and not in a good way. The employee helping us seemed clearly annoyed from the start. Basic, reasonable requests were met with visible irritation, and the overall attitude made it feel like we were inconveniencing them just by being there. That kind of interaction sticks with you more than the food does. What really added to the confusion was noticing trays of fresh, better-looking donuts behind the counter as we were leaving--none of which were available or mentioned while ordering. Yes, the prices are lower than other places, but the portions reflect that, and the service makes it hard to justify even a quick stop. There is not much room from the door so this area can get very crowded. We were in the third row as we entered and had to maneuver around a couple people to get all the way in. The workers also call out when they are free so you may need to work your way to the front to see the display case as others are being waited on. Since we were travelling, we decided to only get a half dozen. We made our selections and were back in the vehicle in no more than five minutes. They are very efficient in moving people through. The donuts are very uniform in size between the regular glazed and filled. The flavor is good and the texture is on the lighter side with good integrity. They do not fall apart as you eat. The fillings are typical flavors and could be filled a bit more than what we received. The bavarian cream was filled with vanilla pudding which was a bit disappointing. Still, the donuts are good and are sold at a good price. The place can get really busy but the workers know how to move you through quickly. Red's is certainly a good donut option.
