This is a collaborative effort with the bar Used to be's... also was formerly known as Bayside cafe. The vibe is fun, fresh and comforting. They serve healthy breakfast and lunch portions. Service is fast and fresh. They have a large parking lot and are walking distance to many area attractions. Just here to say this business ruined our favorite bar used-to-bes! what was once a great lunch spot , affordable to the blue collar workers in this town . Is now an over priced, sit down breakfast spot , inside of a bar for I guess the rich? The food was a shell of it's predecessor, I mean seriously the portions were cut to 1/3, I could count the French Fries on my plate without touching the food (8 fries + 2 nub fries) if I'm generous....10 fries total , The breakfast? No better than ihop if not worse , portion again was sad. Eggs were clearly poured from a carton . The burger and fries was laughable , I thought she may have put in a kids meal but not according to the price . I visited The Dune Grass Café at Used to Bees over the Memorial Day weekend for breakfast and chose to sit in the outdoor dining area. Unfortunately, the experience was ruined by a terrible smell. After looking around, I discovered that an open dumpster filled with garbage was located just behind the fence, only about 50 feet from where guests are seated. This was not only unpleasant but also extremely concerning from a health and sanitation standpoint. I'm fairly certain there are regulations about exposed garbage so close to a dining area, and I would expect the health department to take notice. Very disappointing. read more

Stumbled upon this cafe on a rainy Wednesday morning when we took a wrong turn looking for a breakfast spot. For us that turned out to be a plus! Cute little house turned into cafe. Seating inside and outside was plentiful. Staff is friendly and helpful. The menu was a nice selection of typical breakfast and lunch options. The usual pancakes and eggs and French toasts as well sides. Lunches were simple sandwiches and salads. Also included a few specials. We ordered three tasty dishes. My daughter had eggs toast and bacon, my husband had a Normandy omelette and coffee. The platter came with toast and home fries. I had one of the specials which was huevos rancheros. Two tostadas with beans, fried eggs, sauce and cheese, and topped with fresh sliced avocado. I also had a side of sausage links. Service was quick and the food was flavorful and just the right portion. We were all very satisfied! Happy to have found this little spot. Worth checking it out for a casual breakfast or lunch. Oh one extra fun thing which is kid friendly - they give you crayons and encourage you to draw in the paper table cover! So much fun! We left a thank you msg for our sever! read more

Cobb salad was fairly good but Ken's dressing in a plastic container? Really? And the chips with my dry plain turkey sandwich were also in a bag. They up-charge nearly everything, sour dough bread and even tomatoes! Absurd. Also the up-charge on eggs ought to be $1.00 per egg not $3.00. That calculates to 86% gross margin. We came here for breakfast and it was a bit of a cluster. Once we got seated, it was about 15 mins before we asked who our waiter was and they were not thrilled we asked. Our waitress when she came over was very sweet and the food was good, but the manager....first she walked out with a hot plate and then got mad we didn't want to touch the plate with our hands when she was using a towel. And then when we put multiple cards downstairs she informed us we couldn't. We were in the middle of something so we told her we would just work it out with our waitress instead of just venmoing each other like she suggested. She got mad and said well she was the manager. Service was bad. The poor kids who work here looked like they would have rather have been anywhere else on earth instead of working there. The food took over 40 minutes to get to us after putting in our order (I feel like that is totally ridiculous). We also got 0 updates from our server during these 40 minutes as he has literally disappeared. The food was good though. They messed up 2 of our dishes though and gave one plate home fries that were for another plate. They took like 5 minutes before coming to tell us of the mistake. For how long it took, it's insane they couldn't even plate it right. I got the crab cake Benedict. I will admit, it was quite yummy but extremely difficult to cut. My boyfriend got the blackened chicken tacos which were also pretty good. Ambiance is okay besides the sad looking waiters. Poor service. Good food. Okay ambiance. read more

We came here after a nice great day at the beach so essentially we're a big group of people, around 11 and we all have appetites. This place delivered and it was a great way to grab some grub and leave stuffed and satisfied. Dune Grass Cafe has really good portion sizes, the waiters treat you like their own family, type diner action, very caring and quick on the service with the water. I had a classic avocado toast on rye. Good seasoning and crisp bread and the potatoes. I forgot what the potatoes were called but they were nice and crispy with a moist interior, perfect on their own but sizzling and lovely with some hot sauce or ketchup. My friends got egg platters and their portion sizes were enormous. Definitely come on down here to eat after a beach day or even just to grab a bite. read more

Coffee was the smoothest coffee we've ever had with a bold flavor. I had Mrs Wall's omelet which was delicious. If you want a big omelette however this is not it. I had a side of pancakes which tasted good but were a little dry. My husband had Crab Benedict where eggs were spectacular with a good Hollandaise. The crab cake was a little dry. The food is okay. Nothing special and you could most of it at any diner. The waitress we had was very kind and did everything she could for us. The hostess was absent and left lines of people waiting for tables which they had open. The manager was extremely rude and needs to be retrained in her position. Service was great, our waitress Olivia was patient and on point! There was a bit of a wait to receive our food as it was very busy so that's to be expected. All the food came out hot and fresh. Staff is lovely, food is great. My one star removed from 5 has to do with the person who said she was the manager. When it came time to serve the food, the manager asked me to help her out by taking the plate, which she was serving with a cloth. If the plate is too hot to serve with your bare hands, why are you asking me to touch it with mine? When it came time to pay the bill, the manager said we can't split the check and that we'll have to Venmo each other or something. We were fine with that, but we said that we'd speak to our waitress about it (as we were in the middle of something and wanted to figure it out later). She didn't take the hint and then assumed we were challenging her and said that she's the manager. We rephrased and she left. This manager needs to: - Treat her staff better - Lose the chip on her shoulder - Not expect the customer to do what she herself would not do - Not try to be part of the customer's problem-solving process Had the Crab Benedict. Run, don't walk to this adorable cafe/restaurant! Located in lovely Bay Head, among the peaceful walks that you might take to look at unique stores, sits this out of this world restaurant. My husband (who is an expert on veggie burgers) said his was the "best one that I ever have had...and can't wait to go back!" Mary, the sweet owner, who talks to her guests and contributes to the welcoming atmosphere, makes all the food options look amazing and taste even better. I saw many choices, going from salads to special sandwiches all made with care. Everyone who I spoke to was raving about their food and we felt very lucky to have gotten seating outside or really anywhere at this place. I visited this quaint cafe in the winter and will definitely have to go back in the summer. The food was good, however slightly on the pricier side. Service was great, felt like a mom & pop. Yesterday in the boiling hot heat I had a wonderful experience at the dune grass café. We arrived early and secured a comfortable table for five. We sat under an umbrella and were served delicious cold beverages by a Busy and attentive server. After I devoured my Arnold Palmer and subsequentlyI had several refills of they are exceptional iced tea. Once we sat down we realized that it was way too hot to eat outside. Therefore, we ordered our meals "to go"and socialize for a bit. Our server kept our entrées inside in their nice chilled air. When I got home to the comfort of my air-conditioned house , I was delighted to feast on my fantastic Cobb salad. I substituted chicken salad for the grilled chicken and was thrilled with the outcome. The salad had a delicious a hard boiled egg, sliced ripe avocados and tomatoes, carrots etc. the balsamic dressing was a nice touch. My daughter really really loved the tuna salad wrap. She shared it with her BF and they both agreed that it was the best restaurant tuna salad they had ever had. They are New Yorker foodies, so this is remarkable. Please note that their chicken salad was also excellent. I really like supporting local businesses during this time of Covid-19 and It seems like others have gotten the memo too. The restaurant was packed with outside diners who were appropriately spaced apart. Everyone were also likely enjoying they're Dune Grass café experience. The Dune Grass Cafe is located a few blocks from the beach, has outdoor seating and inside has an older home feel with character that is clean and cute. We went earlier in the day on a weekday 8:30-9ish for breakfast and were seated quickly outdoors. Our server and other staff could not have been more friendly and are a good example of good customer service, checking on us, filling coffees, etc. The food was above average, I had an omelet with excellent fresh toast and hash browns sides that came with it. All were delicious. My other family members enjoyed their meals too. Prices are on par for what you are getting and are reasonable. Only two downsides: 1) my iced coffee although not weak was not good flavor and I would avoid getting it again. 2) food took a little longer- maybe an extra 15 min more than I'd expect, but hey, cut them some slack, it's the COVID pandemic and all are short staffed. After decades of Dorcas - dune Grass is decent but not Amazing . The venue is lovely outside and extraordinary on a sunny day. But our sandwiches took a while to arrive and the restaurant was not crowded. However there is ample place to park both bicycles and cars and the town was teaming with people adding to the excitement and enthusiasm at the café. I can't brag about my lunch but it was good but again not extraordinary. I think the longer they are in business, the more they will have the opportunity to improve as there are few cafés in town. Replacing Dorcas which had been there for decades, are big shoes to fill, but I believe the potential is there. It does seem popular for those who gather for ice cream; but I haven't had that pleasure yet. read more

The food was very good here however the outdoor seating is beyond horrible. The cheapest, crappiest plastic chairs on top of rocks made for a most uncomfortable lunch. I could barely move for two days afterwards. If you have a bad back, find another restaurant. And the tables are way too small. BERKS rocks. Two weeks in and he has the server mentality of greeting people, smiling, checking back, continued water, refills and making us feel welcome. On our visit last month we had breakfast but this sunny September afternoon taking a beach break, we ordered lunch. I haven't had an open faced Reuben in awhile so, this plate filled with rye bread piled with corned beef, sauerkraut, melted cheese all layered into a really tasty classic sandwich plus a small bag of chips ($13.95). My partner loves tuna so she ordered a tuna BLT wrap roiled tight with a hugh amount of fresh mixed tuna, mayo, lettuce, chopped tomato and crumbled bacon in the middle. Oh, yum! ($10.95). Both sandwiches we're substantial and served fresh but I decided to try a sundae waffle bowl of Hershey's pistachio ice cream with all the extras! The patio is filled with nice tables, seating for about 40 with multiple colored umbrellas blocking the sunshine, staff walking through, checking on people, cleaning tables, all eager to help diners. The Dune Grass Cafe has grown to offering dinner in addition to their breakfast, lunch and ice cream options. This past summer, my fiancée and I tried Dune Grass for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. We started with the octopus appetizer. It was presented almost as a creamy thick soup with a puree of cauliflower base, chunks of octopus, and green onions and paprika on the top. It was very tasty and I would highly recommend it. For our entrees we ordered the beet salad which had generous large slices of beats over arugula with vinaigrette and chopped nuts. It was a nice lite summer dish. For my entree I ordered the squash boats. The summer squash was sliced and topped with a chorizo that was almost like a chili. The presentation of the squash was very elegant over pesto. I really enjoyed the balance of flavors. The chorizo had a spicy kick and paired nicely with the earthy pesto and squash. I would recommend Dune Grass for anyone looking to try a more modern dinner with affordable prices in the shore area. read more
