After a bit of research we chose Minute Men Moving and Storage Ltd (2-2913 Allenby Road, Duncan, BC). Our final estimate was done over the phone. We were asked a handful of questions, then they put together an estimate. No one came to see our condo, and there were no follow up questions. The estimate was for $2,981.07. The final bill came in at $6186.32, and some of our belongings were left in Vancouver. Read the whole story below: Our printed estimate clearly stated that a five ton truck would be used. We were also told that the truck would come with slots to protect our artwork, and wardrobe containers (so we would not need to pack any clothing we had on hangers). What arrived was a twenty foot container with nothing but straps and moving blankets, with one driver and one Vancouver local hired to help with the move. We had to do an unexpected last minute scramble to pack all of our shirts, suits, dresses etc. Both the driver of the truck and the mover hired locally said the container was not a five ton container, but a 20 ft (three ton) container. The driver stated that the dispatchers of Minute Men Moving had done this to clients before. After five hours, the three of us (I helped load the truck all day) could not fit all of our possessions on the container. The driver told us that this had happened with Minute Men in the past, and that the company had sent a truck to collect the remaining items at their own cost. We elected to leave our patio plants and furniture behind, as the condo had to be cleaned for the new owners within a couple of days. The next day when the container arrived at our new home we were presented with a bill for more than twice the estimate (From $2981.07 to $6186.32). We could not have our possessions unloaded until payment had cleared. The driver of the truck and the two workers once again were clear that this was not a five ton container. We were told that the excessive price increase was due to the weight of the container. Once again, I pitched in and helped unload the container. When we brought the size of the truck up with the office, Minute Men Moving dispatcher, Bobby Tremblay, replied that five ton trucks come in many configurations, and that as far as his company was concerned a five ton truck was sent. (My thought regarding this statement is that a five ton moving truck can come in many shapes and sizes, but the container that was sent was clearly smaller than a standard five ton moving truck. It was a 20 foot container, and a standard 5 ton truck is 35 feet long.) No compensation was offered for the lack of wardrobe containers or protection for our art. As for our belongings on the patio, we were told no trucks would be in the area, and that we would have to deal with the logistics and costs of moving these items from Vancouver to Duncan ourselves. We tried to resolve these issues with Minute Men Moving and Storage several times over several days, but the company refuses to take responsibility for not using the truck and wardrobe boxes promised in the estimate, and accuses us of not providing enough information when the estimate was being done over the phone. To quote Bobby the dispatcher, "Why didn't you tell us you had patio furniture and bicycles?" To which we replied "Why didn't you ask?" The company is a professional moving and storage operation, we have moved once in 20 years. Who would be more qualified to determine what questions should be asked when an estimate is done by phone? As far as Minute Men Moving and Storage is concerned, 100% of the fault is ours. In fact they claim that they feel they have provided service 'above and beyond the call'. To be clear, we do not blame the movers that did the loading and unloading in any way, they were all outstanding. They were polite, professional and the Vancouver team did nothing short of miraculous with how much they fit onto the 20 ft container for us. The office staff at Minute Men were also polite with the exception of the dispatcher, but no one would take any ownership of their mistakes, and nothing has been offered as compensation. Moving homes is stressful enough without being treated so poorly. After our experience with Minute Men Moving and Storage, we question how they could have ever received an A++ rating on the Better Business Bureau. We would also like to help people avoid having a horrible experience like we did.

After about 45 minutes they hadn't come back in to start packing. At $205 an hour, I sure want to see packing and not smoke breaks. I want out and asked what was up. The crew chief said rudely that there was too little space for them to pack and they had called the boss about it.?????????? He was talking somewhat scornfully to me. What the hell? That's like having a mover show up and say they can't lift boxes, so they won't do the job. I tried to call the firm but no answer. I emailed the estimator but no answer. I went out again to ask them to commence the job. They refused. The crew chief rudely told me to call 2 Burley Men. No other solutions were offered. The house was as seen by the firm's estimator, and no problems or required prep work was mentioned to us. We hired packers because the deadline to move out - our house is sold - is close, so even though the estimate was high, $205 an hour, I hired the firm and paid a deposit. The workers would not return to do the job. The crew chief's arrogance let me to strongly suspect that if they did the job, they would do it poorly and our belongings, some of which have dollar and sentimental value, would be at risk. I know that it never works out well if you have to force or convince someone to do a job against their will. I told the crew chief to do the job, he declined. He swore obscenely as he got into his truck to leave, calling me a variety of generic nasty names like 'fuckin' asshole' etc. Just as well. There's no way I'd want to hire a packer who couldn't do such a simple job. The crew chief was too incompetent to do the job he was hired for. Incidentally, There were none of those lauded uniforms. These guys didn't even take off their shoes, which were not safety footwear, I have a varnished wood floor. Thanks for the damage, jerks. My lawyer advises me that this firm will be liable for the difference in cost between their estimate and what it will cost me to do a rush last minute move with a different firm. Later I get a call from Rebecca, who introduces herself as the spokesperson for the firm. She insisted that the crew left and didn't do the job because I had told them to leave. I did not. They left and refused to do the job. So the crew chief is lying as well as incompetent and miserable at customer relations. Let me point out that I have cameras with audio and there were three of us in the house that can confirm the facts. Rebecca took the position that I had declined services. This is not the case. Her crew chief refused to work. I had no option except to hire a different frim or be unable to complete my move. Chose a more professional and reliable firm than this one. Rebecca would be wise to get rid of her packing crew chief and replace him with a decent person. Rebecca, you better fire that guy in order to preserve what you can of your business. When moving out of my storage unit, I gave them excellent advance notice, told them the day i would be vacating, and tried to leave a voice message multiple times that day to inform them I had vacated, as required, but mailbox was full and its unstaffed over the weekend. They then went ahead and charged me for another month because I hadn't notified them - despite no option to leave vm, and despite previous email stating exactly that info. Too lazy to walk a couple hundred yards to ascertain that for themselves I guess. Or too greedy. Rude response to inquiry about why I was charged another month. Highly recommend finding other storage services!

Addendum: The owner final contacted us (3 months later) and offered us $1,000 of storage at no cost to help recover our losses. We will take him up on the offer.

I'm seriously writing this to look out for you…read more Here's the short form, the company's constantly breaching the employment standards act for BC, not only that but they are definitely anything but professional. This is just the tip of the iceberg. There's some major issues within the company they hire without any proper interview nor do they make you sign any forms. They do not pay their workers well and offer no overtime. They also threaten workers with pay deductions. They also fish for reviews constantly. Not only that they will quiet fire employees. Also note they do not provide workers with any formal training or proper handling techniques. Drivers are hired without their drivers abstract being reviewed or even proof of a class 5 license. The company promises unrealistic quotes on work, and will purposefully withhold items until payment is received. If something is broken their first thought is to attempt to hide it as best they can to avoid giving you a discount or resolving the matter properly. Also note if you do find damage to your property the manager will actively make it difficult for you and try to evade your questions and a proper discount. Allegedly within their contracts they say that you must write a good review (despite if they did a terrible job) of the company or they will attempt to charge you. The workers themselves are none the wiser so it's not worth taking your frustrations out of them most of the time they'll get reprimanded if the customer is difficult. Again PLEASE do find a different company and if you must use this one I urge you to be very skeptical and read everything of the contract.

I contacted cody for a moving quote earlier this month, and I noticed how he sounded like he was on…read moremedication that made his thinking really unclear and slow as he sounded very out of it, and as well he kept speaking over top of me and asking me to repeat myself. after he took all of my content and location information he said " i am not in the office now I will have to send you a quote tomorrow morning. " by 11am the next morning I received no quote, so I called cody again and he sounded like he was sleeping or like he was doped up and drugs. he said he will email me the quote by 2 pm that day. 2 pm went by and I did not receive a quote from him so I texted him at 4 pm. Nothing So I went to a concert that night, and came home at 11:30 am and there was no quote from cody. So I texted him with an appropriate piece of my mind, and explained to him how he made himself look blatantly unreliable and that I would never hire him or his father's company nor would I recommend papas moving to a friend or to anyone. cody was ridiculously unprofessional. I highly do NOT recommend relying on or hiring pappas moving.
