11.16.24 Rainbow soup dumplings were flavorful and succulent. So that I didn't make a mess, I squeezed and slurped all the broth prior to taking a bite of the dumpling and the dumplings were still moist. I loved the variety of being able to try six different types of filling which included pork, spicy pork, chicken, shrimp and zucchini, crabmeat and pork, and black truffle (pork). It would honestly be hard to pick my favorite. Each one tasted distinct even the broth. I believe this was previously named something else and likely under different ownership. During that visit, I had suggested in that review that providing a soup spoon would be easier to eat the dumplings. Fortunately they had soup spoons during this visit as the last time I made a mess all over myself.

Got my dumplings as take out and wanted to try a little bit of all kinds of dumplings so we got a good variety to share. The black truffle soup dumpling and the shrimp pork chive dumpling were outstanding. I could eat a whole batch myself. The pan fried dumplings were exactly what were promised, but the amount of filling was inconsistent and I like my dumplings a little fluffier. They may have been denser because I got it as take out. I'm not sure if it would be different had I eaten there. As for the scallion pancake, I would not order that again. It was fried and that's not the way I prefer it. Over all, I would go back, but I think now that I've tried it, I am more oriented to know what I would and wouldn't like on the menu.

Truffle Soup Dumplings and Pork Chop Noodle Soup

I come here every couple of months to meet my family half way. Now after a few times I have found my way around the menu and have selected my faves. The black truffle pork dumplings I believe are the most flavorful of the soup dumplings. Nothing beats shoving that delicious sweet cherub in your mouth and feeling that broth explode in your mouth. The pork chop is no joke, the best item on this menu. Marinated then deep fried to perfection. Have it over soup. Have it over rice. Have it by itself. It's amazing. The ladies making the dumplings are always so nice and flirt with my kids. It's a small place but man, it's so worth the drive to this place. If you're in the DMV, they have multiple locations!

Delicious way to taste around all of the dumpling flavors available! My favorite dumpling was the Black Truffle Pork Dumpling. Get ready for pork, chicken, shrimp and crab meat! Service was courteous and you can see the dumplings being made live! The ambiance was one for eating in and taking out, nice and petite. Ellicott City definitely had a gem!

I went back to the Dumpling District and took my friend with me. She loved her rainbow soup dumplings. I ordered the spicy chili wonton with peanut butter. It was interesting with the peanut butter but I my preference would be just to have the spicy part. I am glad I tried it . It was still good, not a fan of the peanut butter. I would love to try the pork appetizer and my friend ordered it and loved it!

Pan Pan-Fried Pork Buns $10.95, Pork Soup Dumplings $11.95, Shanghai Shumai $6.95

We came for the first time on a Saturday evening at 5:30 pm. It was not crowded yet until 6 pm. You place your order with the cashier or kiosk at the front counter. There is a lot to choose from the menu so you may want to study it beforehand on their website. Everything we ordered was made fresh so we waited 15-20 minutes. We tried the pork soup dumplings (6 pieces), pan fried pork buns (6 pieces), and steamed Shanghai Shu Mai (4 pieces). Your number is called at the counter for pick up. Everything was tasty, but not large. The dining area is small, but you can also sit next door at tables for Kung Fu Tea, which has a larger space. Only these 2 businesses are currently part of Luna Hall. The only negative point is the price, which is $1-$2 higher than other dim sum restaurants, considering that this is a not a sit-down place with wait staff. We will return to try entrees next time!

Black truffle soup dumplings.

After trying soup dumplings for the first time I was looking for an option that didn't require me to travel out of state to satisfy my cravings and this is now my go to restaurant for them! Their mala soup dumplings are my all time favorite and to mix things up I usually get the black truffle soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns to split as well. The food is excellent and the staff are very kind, they also offer dim sum and bubble tea options as well. There are two seating areas which are clean and inviting with nice decor including a graffiti wall. Not a massive restaurant but definitely a good spot for a group of up to 8 people. We have been repeat customers since we discovered them and through some changes to the menu and branding the food has remained high quality.

The ambiance, the lighting was so cute!

If you're looking for quick and delicious food, head over to Dumpling District! On this cold and windy day, I was craving dumplings. Their rainbow dumplings were right up my alley and they were perfect for a day like this. My boyfriend ate the spicy stir fry noodles and they didn't disappoint. They had the perfect amount of spice, sauce, and the crunch from the bok choy was delightful. Our cashier was friendly and patient with us while we decided what to order. Overall, this was a great experience that I'd highly recommend.

My actual review is 3.5, but we got takeout and I'm guessing everything would have been a little better if we'd had it right out of the kitchen. I placed a large-ish order online. It was ready on time, correct, and clearly labeled. The soup dumplings had obviously lost some soup, but were still very tasty (black truffle was the overwhelming favorite). They were a little flat, but again I think if we'd had them right away they would have been great. The baos were also good, and the scallion pancake isn't quite what we are used to but still nice. Kids are already talking about what they want to order next time, so that's pretty high praise.

Came for breakfast around 11am. Ordered savory rice roll. Good fillings. Also pan fried soup dumplings. Six per order. Definitely enough for one or to share. Everything excellent. Also very clean.

Not for me. Spent nearly $50 on 4 dishes (bao buns, potstickers, shumai). Buns were super dense and greasy(see pic), not fluffy and steamed as I expected. Overall prob just not my kind of food, but took a chance. Onion flavors overpowered everything. Didn't take leftovers home. Nice and clean restaurant. Friendly staff.

Bao
Cas N.

The food wasn't that great. The soup dumplings, shrimp wantons, chicken bao, and the vegetable soup were all lacking in flavor and didn't have a distinct taste. Lovely presentation and secure packaging but surprisingly bland. The food is also a bit pricey but portions are a good size. Overall, the service was fine, the food came out quickly but I wouldn't necessarily come back because of the lack of flavor.

Spring Roll
Katie C.

I want to preface this by saying that when you get to the location, the name of the location is Luna Hall, but they do share the dumpling shop and a tea shop. We thought we were lost, but not to worry, this is the place! We ordered the spring rolls and the rainbow soup dumplings and they were sooo good! My favorite was the spicy pork. It was a bit of a challenge eating it because it's filled with soup but all of them were delicious! I'd love to come back and try their dim sum.

The owner served us. She was very warm and friendly. I could hear staff in the kitchen speaking Shanghai dialects. The owner Mrs. Sun told us every dish was prepared by Shanghai people, and herself, authentic Shanghai dishes. We ordered 5*soup dumplings: homemade, lots of filling, 8 dumplings in one order. 4*Sauteed Fish Filet Wine Sau: not enough wine sauce. The owner said that some diners always request less sauce and salt, so it was cooked with less sauce, but we are more accustomed to original flavor. She gave us some extra wine sauce. 5*Biscuit Stuffed Pine-Nut with Red Bean Paste: for us, it's a must order dessert. Delicious and not too sweet.

I came because I heard someone rave about the vegetarian dumplings --they were solid. Quite large and filled with mushrooms, onions, green vegetables and seasoning. I ordered the veggie buns as well, but it's the same filling as the dumplings so no need to order both. I enjoyed both. I also ordered the kung pao tofu which was okay. Some of the tofu pieces were fried too hard and made it difficult to chew. The flavor was spot on. I would return and possibly try a different tofu dish, but it appears that they are better with the meat dishes so I'm not sure if it's the most comfortable option for vegetarians. Nevertheless, I liked my experience overall.

We came on a Friday night, and had to wait about 30 minutes for seating. The dining area is basically wooden chairs and tables. Not much ambiance, but that's not why you come here. We ordered scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, eggplant with basil, and noodles with chicken. I never had scallion pancakes. Nothing I would order again. I have nothing to compare, but I assume they're good. The dumplings were fantastic. The eggplant, which comes in three varieties, appeared to be a popular item with other guests. I guess it was good. I'm not a fan of saucy food. The noodles were fantastic. I feel like we ordered wrong, although my girlfriend picked everything except the noodles. This is not a place to visit if you're looking to lose weight. The hard sugar in the eggplant alone was more than I consume in two months. I'm probably not in the best position to rate our dinner as I avoid carbs and sugar. If I were to come back, I'd stick the noodles and revisit the menu to see if there is a solid chicken option. I came here hungry and left hungry as the food was not filling, and the sugar content sent my system into a bit of a shock. Nonetheless, if this cuisine is your thing, you won't be disappointed.

I can't comment on the service or ambiance as this food was delivered. The portions were large. I was taken a back since the lo mein and eggplant were lunch portions, and usually you can expect a small serving, but not at this restaurant. Also, the lunch entrees came with a side of soup, which made this an even better deal (both were $13.95). While the food was delivered hot and packaged well, some of the items were great, and some fell flat due to texture issues. I really like the fried crab wontons, lo mein, and hot and sour soup. They hit the spot. I didn't enjoy the Hunan shrimp as the shrimp didn't taste fresh and had an odd texture to it. The eggplant also was overcooked so was somewhat a sloppy, dough like consistency when eating, which was kind of off putting. If returning, I would opt for the lo mein and soup.

It's usually packed with Asian folks who come for A&J's dim sum-style food. The food is described as "Northern style" Chinese, and it's definitely not Americanized. I've eaten many a bowl of noodles here, but my favorites are the Dan Dan Mian (with hot spicy sesame sauce and peanuts) and Xue Cai Ro Si Mian (shredded pork and mustard green noodle soup). I've also enjoyed Ma La Er Si (sliced pigs ears with hot and spicy seasoning) and Pi Dan Dou Fu (tofu with Thousand Year Egg) - things I doubt will EVER show up on a menu in my hometown. And the dumplings: oh my. I think I've tried them all, and haven't found one yet I wouldn't order again. The only downside to A&J (besides it being a drive for me) is their cash-only policy. Fortunately there are lots of nearby ATMs, but beware if it's your first visit. Prices are very reasonable and portions are perfect, so overall value is great. I have kept this place in the back of my mind, with fond memories, however, have not visited in some years due to multiple moves around the country. Recently, my friend was organizing a casual gathering for our friend group, and asked ChatGPT if there were any good recommendations for food in the area that was affordable and delicious, and A&J came up as a top choice. So I came back to A&J after almost 10 years, and the food was just as good as I remembered. The decor remained simple and unchanged, but this is very typical of Asian restaurants. The menu was large, and it's easy to order by circling items you want on the paper menu. We had a mix of noodle soup bowls (so many different flavors and styles) and appetizers, and everything we tried was delicious. Our bill came out to less than $25 per person with tip. I could imagine more pretentious Chinese restaurants downtown upcharging a lot more for lower quality Chinese food (Queen's English, for example). It was so good and affordable, that I actually ended up coming back the next day with a different friend. Overall, excellent experience, and I will be back again soon! One interesting tidbit, my coworker who grew up in the Midwest and only eats meat, potatoes, absolutely no vegetables, started going here for lunch and loves it. I think flour-based items (noodles, dumplings, buns) are really the star of the restaurant, and this can be enjoyed across different taste palates! I hope you will give this place a try.

However the pork has grisly bits that couldn't be chewed so that's a star off despite the taste. The soup dumplings had sufficient juice.
