It wasn't a good experience for me. Most doctors are very young and still practicing.

However, one…read moreconsistent issue has been long waits in a freezing room, wearing only a sheet, well past my appointment time. This included my most recent annual, where I was told we could do a biopsy, but the doctor arrived 40 minutes late and ultimately said she didn't have time. Unfortunately, the last three months have been truly frustrating. I had a small, persistent irritated spot below my clitoris, and my usual doctor referred me to Dr. Schreiber for biopsy/removal. While Dr. Schreiber was pleasant, she mistakenly removed tissue from the wrong area (labial skin). A simple "Can you confirm this is the correct spot?" before the procedure could have prevented this error. At the stitches removal appointment, she had the nerve to tell me I was wrong and that the spot I'm indicating was just irritation from the stitches below it. She agreed to remove it anyway, but didn't suggest sending it to the lab, even though I'm a recent stage 4 rectal cancer survivor. She was wrong, of course, because I felt more comfortable having just had a part of my body cut off and silver nitrate put on it than I did the entire 3 previous weeks. Over the course of multiple follow-ups and messages, my concerns were continually minimized or dismissed. I saw four different doctors: two brushed it off as inflammation, one worsened the issue by removing additional skin, and another prescribed estrogen cream only after I brought it up--and then ignored my biopsy request. Let's say they never resolved the issue, and I'm being treated by a dermatologist now who actually cares about helping. Adding to the frustration, I can never reach anyone on the phone except scheduling, and that's including the triage nurse.

Doctors are fantastic, informative, and willing to take time to answer all your questions. Only reason for the lack of stars is due to the front staff, I've never had a good experience with them. They are rude, have an attitude, roll their eyes, and expect you to read their mind when they need something. I tried to ask one questions about the payment, and they just plainly stated I should read what I signed better, when I was not asking a question about what I signed.

Megan was super helpful to have at my birth experience at Rex. She was a rational, calm and sweet influence. She explained things. She asked for things, helped advocate for us and held my legs while I pushed for three hours! I couldn't imagine not having her there. She took pressure off my husband and made a very, potentially, stressful experience way better. I also enjoyed the post birth visit - she played with my son and shared some of her birth experiences - it made me feel better about my stresses., I also had a massage shortly after the birth and a stomach wrap. It was lovely.

My delivery was horrible. Amy Davenport is one of the worst midwives and providers I've ever met. She has an attitude the whole night I was in the l&d unit. She should have her license taken away. I ended up having a C-section after a failed induction (that I did not want to have). I received wrong information by two different midwives when I was able to get discharged. Honestly, such a horrible experience. I'll never deliver with UNC midwifery again nor deliver at UNC.

Today, May 31, 2022 I go into the practice which they had some sort of emergency and was seen late. I was fine with that. The lady who called me back took my vitals which were all good. I was told that I had to do blood work today and leave a urine sample. Well, as I was speaking to the lady who bought me back I was informed that they wanted to do a swab which I told them that I could do later and a glucose test which they knew I did not take at all based on information that was provided at the original intake. The midwife tells me they are not going to be able to see me because I am high risk. I asked her what makes me high rush, she tells me it's due to my history. I ask how is this when this was known prior to me coming. I drive to Cary from Fayetteville. The midwife said well we can transfer you to our physicians here and I ask why didn't they make that call from the beginning being they knew my history the entire time? At this point I ask to speak with the person over the department or a charge nurse. The charge nurse is Amanda, she comes in and immediately asks me about the glucose test and has an attitude in reference to me not taking it. This is very apparent and evident that this was not a pleasant thing for them and it came with the repercussions of mistreatment simply because I refused. She goes on to tell me that they get to choose who they see as this is their license and you can see the physicians. I let her know that all of the information they received today was what was already given prior to during the phone interview and nothing at all was said. I explained to her that if the midwives were not going to see me then they should have not scheduled me to come all the way out here. She goes into a straight rant about how it wasn't her who called me out and she didn't take the call. I told her it was her practice and if I needed to see a physician based on the information they already had they should have never wasted my time. She proceeds with asking me to leave right now or she is going to call security. I go to ask the lady at the desk what the number was to the supervisor and she comes back over to me and says I asked you to leave and I am calling the police. Again she returns at this point as I am attempting to get the phone number which she doesn't want me to have and says I told you to leave which is now harassment as I have done nothing to her and she is clearly displaying a "power trip" for no reason. She was the rudest, nastiest, most disrespectful, unprofessional, un-compassionate wanna be "charge nurse" that I have ever met in my whole entire life. I also believe that race was an issue with her and that she was bias towards me based on my wishes as a mother. Amanda called the police and said that I was disrupting the practice, that I was belligerent and so many other things which were ALL LIES. This lady should have never been accepted on the board of nurses and I will be reporting her for her actions towards me this day. I finally spoke to Samantha Hepting who was completely unconcerned, showed no type of compassion which made me feel as if this type of behavior was acceptable among her midwives and nurses. If you are black and have done any amount of research regarding tests, if you have certain things that you do not desire as far as testing I would not recommend this practice to you.

Since there was potential for a VBAC I felt the need for some added support for the laboring process since I never labored with my first.  The main consideration, and one that Mariam stressed, was that she is there to support BOTH momma as well as partner through the whole process. She was available and supported me at all hours of the night during my bouts of prodromal labor weeks before my due date and she encouraged and advised me as the days passed beyond my due date.   When it was finally go time 1 week after DD, Mariam was at the hospital within minutes of our arrival at 3am and didn't leave our side until a few hours after baby finally arrived 15 hours later.... all throughout she helped coach me and my hubs through the labor pains and provided context when I needed it for further decision making (I ended up opting for epidural and had lots of questions about it)....  She stayed on top of moving me hourly when nurses or midwives weren't around and even followed up directly with the nurse when my BP dropped lower than normal.... I am so happy we decided to hire a doula and through the whole process I felt heard and supported.  She put me at ease and i honestly felt the whole process went much more smoothly in my mind because she was there as extra support.   A huge bonus is that she also helped to capture some beautiful candid moments right after the birth of our LO.  She of course asked if I wanted her to take photos when discussing birth preferences and she transferred the pictures securely... it was so great for me to be able to go back to these afterwards since most of it was such a blur!  Also, another thing worth mentioning that I appreciated is that she acknowledges that one's doula preference really depends on momma's own preferences and personality so she encouraged me to reach out and interview other doulas before making a decision. I appreciated this (similar to finding an amazing yoga or fitness instructor...the exercise is beneficial but sometimes you just need to make sure the person coaching you doesn't rub you the wrong way)... I highly recommend Mariam - she was helpful before, during and after birth and has a calming and friendly demeanor... When comparing some of the pricing for doulas around the Triangle, she was on the more reasonable end of the spectrum.  Every penny well spent....No regrets from this momma!!

As an expecting mother, although I read books, visited online forums, consulted with family and friends, and took classes with my partner, I was still nervous about labor and birth. Having Mariam by our sides before and during labor took so much of the worry and anxiety away. She was able to answer all the questions we had about labor, delivery and post partum with grace and compassion. When I thought I was going into labor, she was one of the first people I contacted and she was there as I needed her--I liked that she was as available as I needed but still gave my partner and I the space to make the experience our own. Having her with us at the hospital was monumental--she encouraged me to walk the ward to help progress labor, applied pressure/massage as contractions were happening, helped talk to the doctors as I was unable to due to pain. I loved knowing I had someone in the room that had helped others through birth before and could be my translator. When it came time to push, she was an amazing coach! Delivery was pretty much perfect and I owe a lot of it to Mariam--I'm fortunate she was there with me during the scariest and most joyful moment of my life. Again, one of her greatest gifts is the ability to "read the room"--to step in when you need her but also to give space to make the moment special for you and your partner. If you are contemplating hiring a doula, I highly recommend Mariam with Designated Doula.

I also love their health portal where I can communicate to my doctors if I'm having any trouble with suggested cold medication, or ask about certain products I'd like to use to see if they are okay for pregnancy. Sometimes I feel like I ask ridiculous questions on the portal and at appointments, and the healthcare providers never make me feel embarrassed or ashamed. Now it's true. If you are looking for education on oral or hormonal contraceptive methods, this office is not for you. But just because they don't promote this doesn't mean the office is hyper religious. I did go to one of the educational appointments on this. I attended an appointment in which you can prevent pregnancy by using something called "The Listening Method" which entails you to keep track of the consistency and color of your cervical mucus. By keeping track, they give you a chart that you have to mark. Based on the chart you can tell how fertile you are. I thought that this was a great idea for people who do not want to use hormones or other contraceptives such as a copper T intra uterine device (IUD). The listening method is great, however, I think this would be better utilized for busy people by turning this into an app. The front desk staff is also very helpful. My husband and I had a big gender reveal party, and they were very careful not to disclose the sex during our appointment. They were also kind enough to inform our baker of the baby's sex. My one start dock is for issues with appointment scheduling. I have made in person appointments, and then received notifications via email that they changed an appointment without my consent. Nonetheless taking more time out to have to call and reschedule again. I'm not sure i this is a system error.
