When a bakery has been around longer then yourself, you know it is a good bakery. Duke has 5 years on me and I bet they'll still be here after I cross the Rainbow Bridge. There are several new boutique bakeries that have opened in the Alton area and they're good too, but when it comes to traditional baked goods and donuts, nothing beats Duke. They are know for their donuts, my favorite is the Chocolate Long John and a sack of Donut Holes. Another local favorite they serve up is the Cream Horn. It's decadent cream wrapped in a flakey shell. I've branched out instead of getting my standard order and tried the Cinnamon Roll and Cheese Danish. A few seconds in the microwave and you've got a tasty accompaniment to your morning coffee or tea. The staff is young, and they are both friendly and professional. Good bakery items and friendly customer service, gets me as a repeat customer. If you're a selfie person, they have two great places for photos out front of the bakery, Snap Away. read more

They accept orders online and over the phone; but also have a decent selection for walk in orders as well, which is very convenient. So many Last minute cakes! I live across the river but when we are in Alton we try to always stop in! The shop is full of delicious items. The staff is helpful and friendly. The cheese danish from Duke is the best I've ever had anywhere! The iced sugar cookies are always fun. We have tried Asiago bread, various cookies, brownies, cream horns, danish and tarts. It may be the nostalgia, but Duke's is one of those staples in Alton. Tucked away in a cute neighborhood, Duke's has been around since 1951, and it's easy to see why they've been around so long. A perfect bakery for Alton! Everyone loves it and many of the better local restaurants use their rolls for sandwiches. The true star here is the donuts. They are excellent! It's a great place to stop in for a dessert (many varieties), cookies, sweet breads and even kettle corn and chicharons. They have coolers with more sweets, grab and go sodas and milk. I'll stop in and get my partner and i a sweet treat, always grabbing a nice cold diet Dr Pepper. The service is wonderful. Very sweet staff who are always polite and kind. Duke's Bakery is a Metro East staple. Everything is delicious - especially the cute decorated cookies. My kids love the smiley face ones. Duke's also supports the local community. This summer they offered free breakfast for kids no questions asked and they did again during the government shutdown. Everyone should support this small business. read more

My child always wants something interesting on her cake - beachy cupcakes with a coconut cake, her Roblox character on a cake with rainbow edges - they always come through with her vision! I ordered a cake for my mom's 53rd birthday, and went in the day before to pay for it. I came in the scheduled pick up day and they couldn't find my order. They had my order slip, but no cake. Either my cake wasn't made, or they gave it to another customer. To correct the situation, they offered me a cake from their fresh cake cooler and gave me a gift certificate for my cake that I ordered. Out of all the things that went wrong for my mother's birthday, this wasn't one of them that I needed. I'm not sure how many workers they have on staff, but so many customers came in while the one young lady was helping me, and we had to yell out for another staff to come help the 10 customers that were lining up to be served. This place has great cakes and their sprinkle tea cookies are yummy, but a lot of the other items are not as great. We picked up a few things for Valentine's day and they were just ok. I am always on the look out for new bakeries and unique eateries. I saw this on Yelp and decided I had time to hit it between commitments. It is in an older neighborhood and an older building. it was a cold, blustery day so not a lot of folks out. I was the only customer at lunchtime on a Saturday. The place looked like a bakery but the display cases were not that full. Did I miss a rush? The young lady behind the counter was pleasant enough but no more than necessary to interact with a customer. I ordered a brownie and chocolate covered creme horn. I ate the cream horn on the way to my commitment. I saved the brownie for my daughter. The cream horn was no better or worse than what you could get shriked wrapped at your local grocery store. I asked my daughter later about the brownie. "Eh. I have had better." was her response. I guess one has to live there to know when to get the freshest stuff. Maybe the counter person could have been somewhat interactive and asked me if I needed help (I was pacing back and forth between the display cabinets). read more

Best glazed donuts you will ever eat in your entire life. They are a ten on a scale fo one to five. They will make you weep with joy and be glad you have taste buds. You would sell your soul to the devil just to have these donuts. On one trip to Alton, there was a bad storm that quickly ripped through town and the power went out. Once things were clear, I ran down to Duke to get a dozen donuts to take home. They were selling the donuts for half price because the electricity had gone out while they were cooking and they didn't think they were up to par. They were right, they were not quite as good as normal. But even losing electricity while cooking, these were better than any other donut on the face of the earth. My wife and kids like other things there, but I never get passed the Yum Yum's. I always have a custom birthday cake made there for myself every year. The cakes are out of this world as well! Duke's Bakery was amazing 20 years ago...not so much anymore. Their bread is not as fresh. We bought many loafs a a few different occasions this year and it's just not as good as it use to be.
