If only I had known about Duet Dance when my husband and I were taking dance lessons for our wedding! We ended up at Fred Astaire, which was ok, but not nearly as fun as learning from Szewai (CY). She is so patient and sweet and such a good teacher. It's also a LOT more reasonable in price than somewhere like Fred Astaire. My husband and I took dance lessons with Szewai at Duet Dance Studio in preparation for our wedding day. We sought her out through 3 different referrals who had overwhelmingly positive things to say about their experience with her. Meeting Szewai for our initial consultation, she struck me as warm, friendly, charismatic, and professional. Working with Szewai for over half a year, my first impressions of her not only proved to be accurate, but as a teacher, she is extremely patient, easy going, and intuitive. My husband and I are not the most graceful people on the dance floor, so we were impressed with how Szewai was able to ease our dancing anxieties. We spent the first several lessons figuring out what style of dance would be most comfortable for our skill level and appropriate for us in the time frame we wanted to learn it by. From there, we worked towards honing the basic steps, to customizing a dance routine, to selecting the right music. Although we didn't have much time to practice in between our lessons, Szewai was always patient and able to both explain, review & demonstrate the steps for us in a way that we were able to learn it. I can say that we always left each lesson feeling good about our experience. If you're looking to take lessons for a special event or just for fun, I can't recommend Duet Dance Studio enough! My wife and I took the 4-week progressive salsa dancing course and had a great experience! We learned a lot, Szewai was a great teacher, and he had a blast. We were a little nervous about the concept of rotating partners initially, but we ended up being happy with that system as well, because it gives you a chance to learn more about how different people dance, and it also developed a fun camaraderie between us and the rest of our classmates. Szewai and Grace are both so informative, patient and great dance teachers! We typically dance with Szewai, but had the pleasure of working with Grace while she was out of town, and you couldn't ask for better dance instructors. We have been going for a little over 4 months and always look forward to our dance nights. I travel a lot for work, so we can't make it every week, but Szewai is super understanding and flexible with our schedules. A huge selling point for me as I hate feeling guilty when I can't commit to anything on a weekly basis and love that this works out for us. We liked our classes so much, we did a group class for my birthday in December. Everyone loved it! If you are looking to learn ballroom dancing for any occasion or just for fun, stop your search. Duet is the best. My husband and I signed up for 10 wedding dance lessons and ended up taking 20 because Grace (and all of the Duet staff, really) was beyond wonderful. Our lessons were a high point of each week. Grace's humor, clear instruction, and patience (in droves!) made each session enjoyable and stress-free. Grace planned out a great routine for our first song, helped us learn the basic steps that we'd need to get there, and then got us to bring it all together. We also enjoyed being able to practice our dance in front of a crowd at one of Duet's seasonal parties. Taking dance lessons ended up being one of our favorite parts of wedding preparation. We not only learned how to dance foxtrot and swing; dancing helped us become better communicators in both verbal and physical senses. To that end, the dance lessons proved to be an investment in our relationship, not just some additional expense of wedding planning. We would both take the classes again (and do more!) in a heartbeat. We moved away from Chicago right after our wedding and saying goodbye to Duet was especially bittersweet. We hope our trips back to visit family overlap with some of Duet's great Friday night dance classes! Duet is a great place. The instructors are WONDERFUL, both as teachers and as human beings. We took a swing class which was taught at the perfect pace and we left the 45 minute class feeling like we actually learned something! My husband and I have never felt comfortable dancing in public, so we knew we would need some help preparing for our wedding. We were nervous about taking dance lessons, but Brennen immediately made us feel comfortable. Brennen was always patient and positive. He made lessons fun, and we really looked forward to seeing him every week! Our dance lessons became our regular date night, and we both enjoyed having a chance to learn something new together. Brennen personalized our lessons and ensured that we learned a variety of dance styles and moves. Brennen was also very flexible. If I felt frustrated, Brennen would find a way to help me feel comfortable and supported as we practiced. We opted not to have a fully choreographed dance, but Brennen choreographed an awesome beginning and end to our dance. He also worked with both of us, so we were comfortable leading/following and made sure we learned a few show-stopping moves in our back pocket. The lessons we took with Brennen definitely made us more confidant at our wedding, and we got a lot of compliments from our guests. More importantly, my husband and I actually enjoy dancing together now. We look forward to the dance floor at weddings, and we can have fun without feeling self-conscious. We cannot recommend Duet (and Brennen) highly enough! Everyone we met was extremely friendly, and we were always able to schedule appointments easily. read more

These dance lessons were one of the BEST parts of our wedding prep! At our first lesson, I was nervous because our song was not a traditional love song. Kathryn was our instructor. She developed choreography that was so perfect, it brought tears to my eyes the first time I saw it. Neither one of us has prior experience in dance, but she was a patient and encouraging teacher. She gradually taught us a dance that was elegant and polished but not so challenging that we couldn't have fun. She was good at critiquing us equally, which was important so that we didn't get competitive with each other. She made every lesson something we looked forward to. Our dance received many compliments--people said we looked happy and elegant. I would recommend Duet Dance Studio to anyone. Let's get the elephant out of the room right off the bat; any amateur dance class, especially one that covers the "hustle," has the potential to be awkward. Dance is one of those things that you're either really good at or, well, me. But Szewai Lee, the class' instructor, not only manages to actually teach you something, but somehow miraculously make you feel like you're not completely embarrassing yourself. The class is BYOB (which helps, let me tell you) but overall, it's her instruction (or, more specifically, her style of instruction) that really makes the class enjoyable. If you're tired of going to the bar on Friday night and want to try something different, you'd be hard pressed to find something that's as fun. My girlfriend and I will definitely be back (after much, much, much, MUCH more practice on my part). read more

I'm going to put this out there before the review - I did not want to take dance lessons. My (now) wife insisted that we get at least one, and after reading some reviews of Duet Dance Studio we decided to do their introductory lesson. I could not have been more wrong, and we ended up getting 10 additional lessons. Working with Brennen was awesome, and he transformed our dance from the usual boring rocking back and forth in place with a spin or two thrown in into an incredible mashup of foxtrot and swing. More than just learning a scripted dance though, he taught us how to dance, so rather than having anything defined ahead of time we did the entire thing on the fly at the wedding. The best compliment of all - our guests thought it was choreographed ahead of time. Taking dance lessons turned out to be a great idea, and I can't imagine having done them anywhere else. Brennen and the rest of the gang at Duet contributed an incredible part of our magical day. read more

Last Spring/Summer Jane and I went to Duet Dance Studio to learn how to dance for our wedding. (We didn't want to settle for the sway) Within a few minutes of meeting Grace, Brennen and Szewai we knew Duet Dance was the place for us. They have amazing energy, great personalities, and are passionate about teaching people how to dance. We found them easy to work with in scheduling our lessons, choosing music and choreographing a dance to fit. All in all we ended up taking 11 or so lessons. In addition I had so much fun preparing to perform the routine with my wife that I ended up scheduling another lesson with my mother for the Mother/Son dance. Szewai was able to create another routine for us using the music my mother chose. Total Pros at Duet. We will be back for more. The best in dance instruction! My husband and I have attended several of Duet's group dance classes: salsa, merengue, waltz. We always have a good time at their dance lessons. The teachers make you feel comfortable, and at ease, and they make it fun. For our wedding, of course we went with Duet Dance Studio! They created a waltz/bachata routine, (at our request) for us that was great! You don't need to know how to dance either. We had a great experience at Duet! It was a wonderful way to spend some time together during our engagement. On our first session, we weren't even sure what style of dance we'd like to learn or what kind of song we would have for our first dance, but the staff there was so helpful and patient while we worked it out together. In 11 classes we learned two dance styles and are totally prepared for our first dance at our wedding. The majority of our classes were with Brennen, but we also danced with Grace and Mariel. My husband and I have been taking dance lessons with Duet for about 6 months now (but originally in preparation for our September wedding). We danced to a very non traditional song and Szewai choreographed the most unique and breathtaking dance ever. She combined many different dance styles and went above and beyond to make it very unique. Szewai is such a fabulous teacher, as are the other instructors at the studio. I spent a few months taking weekly lessons at Duet for first dance and father-daughter dance instruction. My husband, who had very little previous dance experience, ended up gracefully sweeping me across the dance floor on our wedding night. My 83-year-old dad, who had elaborate "dancing with the starts" type ambitions, did an absolutely whimsical and complex dance with me that left barely a dry eye in the house. Attended a private salsa lesson here for a late mothers day celebration. My mom is obsessed with Dancing with the Stars, so I thought this would be right up her alley. I found Duet on the internet, and after checking out what they offered, I knew this would be perfect. I thought the pricing was SUPER reasonable for a group of 13. I am actually a party planner, so I know the rates are definitely on the low end for what is offered. Plus it is byob, so you really can't go wrong there! Szewai was very patient with my family. We can get a little rowdy, plus, as I said its byob so we were a bit rowdier than usual. LOL She was amazing at teaching us the steps and if we got overwhelmed at any point she gave us a little break to regroup. My mother has tried to pick up salsa before, and she said this was the first time she got it. By the end of the class we had perfected all the basic movements, and the turn, which I have never been able to learn! We will definitely be back for one of the Friday night dance parties. Before meeting Szewai, we were only the type of "dancers" who rocked out a little bit at concerts and other people's weddings. We decided to take some dance classes because we didn't want to look clueless at our own wedding, but we definitely did not want the first dance at our wedding to seem choreographed either. We were not expecting to have so much fun taking pre-wedding dance classes!! Szewai and Duet Dance Studio not only made the first dance at our wedding an unassuming hit but we now have so much more fun at other people's weddings and concerts! Szewai is also really easy to be around, and class sessions were always relaxed, encouraging, focused and without any pressure or judgment. Once we learned the basic moves it was really fun to incorporate them into different types of music. We initially tried a couple of other one-time dance classes at other studios via Groupon-type deals but quickly found out that the best place for ongoing dance classes was by far Duet Dance Studio!!
