(Okay, you called my bluff! Yes, we did.) Firstly, Center Diamond has a fabulous selection of fabrics and the prices are more reasonable than you'd expect. The fabric is sorted into themes and by color-- a feast for the senses! Maybe it's because I've spent most of my time at Joanns (R.I.P.) I was delightedly surprised that they carry flour sack towel fabric. It had never occurred to me to make my own kitchen towels! They have an extensive variety of tools and notions as well as fun vinyl decals to showcase one's sewing love. There's a great selection of patterns with finished samples for inspiration and several kits and a mahoosive selection of stackers, fat quarters, and jelly rolls. The staff was wonderful here! They were incredibly friendly, helpful, and fun. We bought a pattern and they even printed it out for us. My daughter and I can't wait to return! If you're a fabric crafter, do yourself a favor and stop into Center Diamond, you won't be disappointed!

I loved the ocean decor (and you can see the river and boat harbor just outside the back door). Heather loves to support Indie dyers, and the shop reflects that love. She also carries commercial yarn. There's a roving room as well, with luscious braids of fiber. There are also previously owned spinning wheels looking for homes...at reasonable prices. I wish I could've stayed longer; Husband was relaxing at the bookstore next door (an awesome place, too), and it gave me more time to shop, but we wanted to go driving on the beach, and didn't want to run out of daylight. There's a knitting area with comfy chairs, magazines and patterns for sale, and the shop is light and bright. Heather was very helpful and friendly; I appreciated that she showed me around and then left me to browse on my own without hovering. Purly Shell Fiber Arts (I LOVE that name!) is wheelchair accessible, too. It's a sweet yarn shop and worth stopping in if you're in the area. This ain't your Grandma's fabric store!…read more After learning my first grandchild was in the cooker, I started to think about making a baby quilt. I rarely sew, and had never attempted piecing. But now that I was about to enter a new level of passage, I figured it was time to do what Grandmas in my family have done for generations... make a grand baby welcome quilt! I checked out a lot of fabric stores in my area, but liked BJ's best. It is a small shop located out in the middle of almost nowhere, south of Tillamook. It is stocked with lots of modern and unique fabrics, trimmings, patterns, and notions. Their extensive display of sample quilts makes it easy to imagine the possibilities and sets them apart from other shops I visited. And imagining possibilities was just up my alley. My DIL selected gray, white, and lavender for the nursery... and I could choose whatever accent color I wanted for the crib quilt. (Hunh? What happened to pink or blue?) Lucky for me, BJ and Kathy have an eye for contemporary fabrics and had what I needed to make the quilt I wanted to make. What a relief! I also opted to take a quilt making workshop. It was a great investment! Kathy was patient, kind, and nonjudgmental. She guided me through the process and gently reinforced positive outcomes without focusing on my technical issues... like not sewing straight and having trouble with the math. So this is Joann, which means that the "regular price" inventory tends to be significantly marked…read moreup, because their business model is all about coupons and a steady stream of "doorbusters" and special sales. I'd much rather just have mid-to-low regular prices without all the SPECIAL DISCOUNT hullabaloo, but that's not an option, and not the fault of the local store. With that out of the way, they have a reasonably good selection, kind and helpful staff (some of the cutters are pretty gruff, but that's ok with me), and if you can be disciplined about only buying what you need when it's on sale, it's a good local resource. I do wish their art supplies section were better stocked so I could get more of those things when I'm in for fabric purchases, but Dots N Doodles in Astoria is a fantastic place to get paints, etc.
