These donuts are good but not great. When the first opened it felt like this place was kind of revolutionary. But now it just feels like a normal boring donut shop. One thing that separates this from the pack are its prices. I mean $30+ for a dozen donuts? I get the price of inflation has changed the algorithm a little bit but I just can't ever come here again with that price point. The vegan options are awesome! They have them all clearly marked and even a sheet of yummy suggested combinations. There's plenty of parking and a little grassy area with a picnic table across the street to sit (plus a few tables inside). This place is very unique. We would come again. Creations are nearly limitless. I appreciated the sample when we walked in, not all donuts are created equal. I am picky & do not want too much fat in my donut, I don't like when it leaves a film in your mouth. These were very light & soft, not too dense or too sweet. You start with a vanilla cake donut, the you add your dill, topping & drizzle. If that's too much for you, they have some standard creations that they've named. The staff was super helpful & took time to explain how the menu worked since it was our first time here. We ordered a dozen, two each. They were enjoyed by all. Husband had the maple bacon breakfast sandwich. He said it was worth trying, but he would not order it again. The establishment was very clean, which is saying a lot since they sell very sticky food. As soon as we stepped in, we were ensconced with the aroma of fresh donuts. We were instantly greeted by the friendly employees and guided to the menus with photos of every donut they had. The combinations are endless here, with flavors like Blueberry Pancake, French Toast, Maple Bacon, Vanilla Latte. If you don't find your dream flavor on the cards, you can just make it yourself. All the donuts are made to order, so they take the cake donut base and add the toppings and frosting after you order. We ordered an astonishing total of 19 donuts that day and all were made with love. They survived a plane ride home with any issues. Once home, we popped the donut into the microwave for 5 seconds. The moist, cakey, fall-apart texture of the donut is perfect for cake donut lovers. I've tried the Blueberry Pancake, Maple Bacon, and Vanilla Beach and they were all divine. I'm sure they are great on their own, but enjoying bites of the donut with freshly brewed coffee is so uplifting. These made-to-order donuts certainly transcend pre-glazed donuts and defy staleness despite sitting out on a counter for 3 days! Of the ones I've tried the Vanilla Beach has been my favorite. All of the flavors were exciting and lovable but the cinnamon/vanilla combo of that one is my favorite. A must try if you're in the area! I've heard so much about Duck Donuts but never got a chance to go. We were visiting Charlottesville to go to an event when we noticed this shop the shopping center. First time there was overwhelming because i wanted to mix and match so many toppings but since we were in a rush, i decided to go with one of their featured donuts called the Werewolf. Service was friendly but i noticed the place could be a little cleaner than it was. As for the food, donuts were a bit greasy but good. I'm passing thru VA and my family is telling me they tried a doughnut that is better than Doughnut Plant in NYC, better than Krispy Kreme, better than my moms pineapple upside down cake. Better?!?! OMG, hell yes. Its true! I walk in with my cousins. The shop isn't as large as a typical Krispy Kreme, it isn't a factory operation with conveyor belts. You are able to see the operation behind plexiglass, the hot oil vat is frying some sexy ass doughnuts. The chalk board by the register breaks down your doughnut by icing flavor and toppings. I choose a chocolate doughnut with coconut topping but them I look down and see: FRENCH TOAST DOUGHNUT with maple icing. Sold!!!!! This doughnut is the real deal. The cake is moist but more importantly, it's elegant and well crafted. I can taste the freshness, it's a premium doughnut. And it's a fun, sloppy doughnut! Went here for vegan donuts for a special treat for my vegan daughter. The store had big "Now serving vegan donuts" signs on the doors. I was surprised so I went inside to double check that they had them and they said they did. The next day we went there, my daughter very excited by the selection of 12 donuts and all of the toppings etc. However, we learned that the vegan donut machine was "being cleaned" (during the morning rush), and that, even if it were clean, there is a 6 donut minimum for vegan donuts. My daughter was ok with having a vegan donut cooked on the regular machine. We asked, but they wouldn't do that either. They said it "degrades the oil". ?! So we left empty handed. So much for a nice treat. Just another company unsuccessfully trying to get onto the "plant based" bandwagon I guess. read more

As far as donuts go, I'm giving duck donuts a five star rating. Previous to my recent visit to the Charlottesville location I had only ever had Duck Donuts down in their original stomping grounds in the Outer Banks, but this small chain has done well spreading and maintaining original quality. The donuts are excellent and so fresh! You watch them being made behind the glass and then you watch them being topped and finished by the employees. They're doughy and soft and sweet and taste like a thick, fluffy funnel cake hot out of the oil. They're also aesthetically pleasing with all the different toppings you can get, made to order, but even the plain donuts with no fancy toppings are tasty! The line moves quickly and the service is friendly! (It provides a happy contrast to the usual Krispy Kreme visit) I can't wait for a reason to go back for a dozen donuts--all different flavors so there's something for everyone. read more

I am a sucker for donuts, so I had to try these out. I had The Boardwalk minus the powdered sugar. The sugar overload was so intense, I had to remind myself I was eating a donut! The cake is a yellow cake, but my donut was also glazed. I think the glazing process soaks the cake donut a little, but the inside of the donut was still soft and warm. I generally don't think pastries are worth the calories these days. They are often disappointingly dry or TOO doughy. But Duck's is another matter!
