We learned of Duck in Charlotte while at The Salty. Duck serves cake donuts deep fried in soybean oil and then added icing/toppings. Fast service and friendly staff. Donuts were warm but a bit messy to eat since the icing dripped everywhere. All donuts are the same price and it doesn't matter what topping or icing. Think this is a regional store and we have only seen them in NC.

I'd never heard of Duck Donuts before visiting Charlotte, NC, and I'm glad I tried them. All of their donuts begin as a vanilla cake donut, then different icings and toppings are added based on the menu option selected. I ordered 4 donuts which were Twix with chocolate, Twix with caramel, smores, and blueberry pancake. So for the Twix chocolate, they will dip the donut in chocolate icing then top with Twix pieces. I enjoyed the donuts and they have over 20 different combinations on offer. Something to note. If you sign up for their text alerts, you will receive a buy one get one free reward. I tried using this reward at this location, but the staff member first said not every location has this promotion. I then showed her my phone where it shows the reward for this location where she then replied she doesn't have a button on the register to accept this reward so I wasn't able to use it and paid full price. I didn't catch this staff member's name, but she wasn't the most friendly. However, as I went down to pick up my donuts, Mariah, the other staff member who was super friendly, asked if my donuts looked ok. I told her about not being able to use the reward where she shared they don't have a scanner to scan customer's QR code with the reward and she has notified the district manager about this. She then offered to make us 2 free donuts since they don't have a scanner. What great consideration and customer service. Thank you Mariah and I will definitely return for more delicious donuts!

They have breakfast sandwiches on donuts, which were good. But the variety of donut flavors/toppings was the best part, although it was very hard to choose. The donuts were all hot and fresh, total game changer. Would highly recommend grabbing a coffee here and satisfying that sweet tooth of yours!

This is a brilliant concept. Churn out one base donut and then have a ton (ok maybe 20-30) options for toppings. I don't think I've ever had fresh, hot donuts but this was a game changer. Like seriously. These little ringed beauties were so freakin delicious. My friend and I had the combo with a coffee and 2 donuts. My waistline was happy with 2 but I could have mentally had maybe 4-5 more. Sooooo good The maple bacon was sweet and salty and savory and the s'mores donut was perfect warm. I do wish the donut itself had a little bit more density to it - they gave a little too quickly, so eat these over a napkin or a box. Spacious interior but only 2-3 tables to stand and nibble. You can watch your donuts being made on the donut robot - pretty neat. Great service, friendly staff, great recommendations. So many donuts so little time. Great stop.

Although I've heard of Duck Donuts, I wasn't aware that this was a chain. To our surprise, they make each donut fresh; you can see them put the dough in the oil, as well as glaze and decorate each order. Although I wouldn't consider these fancy, artisanal donuts, their warm, fresh donuts are delicious. I ordered their coffee and two donut combo; they didn't charge me for upgrading to an iced coffee. The combo came with a large coffee and your choice of two donuts -- I chose the Bacon in the Sun and the Beach. My order came out to under $5. As for the service, the workers were very patient with my party; there was five of us looking through the donut selection because we were new customers. The wait was very short, and the workers gladly helped us when we needed more cream, sugar, etc.

Never have I ever had a donut made to order just for moi, until I found this place! O M G!!! Every doughnut is made fresh to order starting with a fried vanilla doughnut as the base, which can be enjoyed in all it's pure deliciousness or upgraded with toppings like cinnamon sugar, chocolate frosting, sprinkles, maple and bacon. If you can think of it, they probably have it. I ordered 3 doughnuts, Blueberry, chocolate frosting and cinnamon sugar. Hot dang, first bite love. Second bite I thought, why did I only order 3? Anyway this place is a must try. Located in a shopping complex, parking is ample. Doughnuts are $2.67 if I remember correctly, worth every $. You have to try this place!

Peach seasonal donut with vanilla icing and caramel drizzle

Awesome experience!! WARM, FRESH donuts. Unique flavors that are seasonal. The peach is amazing!! Brett, the owner, was super attentive and truly cares about the customer experience. Could not recommend this place more! Stop in and get a sweat treat, breakfast sandwich, or coffee! I may or may not have got all 3.

Solid choice if you're looking for a standard cake donut with lots of different flavor options. We opted for the Cinnamon Bun and it was good. They start with a base and then add toppings based on your choice, so service was decently fast. I'd say customer service was average. Also got a cappuccino which was decent, they do have an espresso machine.

Their donuts are more like cake donuts, not yeast. Softer than yeast donuts. You can customize your own donuts, start with the plain donuts and choose your own topping and icing. They came out super fresh after your order them, I'd recommend to let them cool down a bit before you eat them or they fall apart too easily. A very generous amount of the icing, every flavor I tried was delicious but flavor they really stood out were maple bacon, blueberry pancake, peanut butter and lemon. The icing make them very sweet , too sweet for my liking. Next time I'd try with not icing since I feel like the donut itself would be just as delicious. The workers were very sweet towards us.

Absolutely fantastic donuts. We liked all twelve that we ordered, but the maple bacon and lemon & raspberry were family favorites.

Since we got there so early, we had ordered from their cafe and their lattes were nice to sip on while walking through their edible garden! I really liked our server, a ginger man, very kind and quirky and it felt personable which I enjoy, he told us about being a Michelin recommended and I'm glad to have experienced it! For starter, I got the smoked salmon hash, and that was filling enough and very fresh! I had ordered their Philly cheese steak with auju and it was sooooo filling, I love a hearty breakfast, but I could only finish one half. I ordered their local sausage patty and it was nice and Smokey and savory! The grits were chunky and cheesy which I really enjoyed, everything was great! Love it! My partner ordered a classic breakfast and their maple bacon is sooooooooo good, I told him he needed to learn to make it because I want more! Their fruits seemed home grown and I really appreciate their decor of sexy veggies on the way! Such a cool place to eat and hang out!

Cracker Barrel would have been a step up. Haven't been to this hipster, that has turned into more of a tourist trap breakfast cafe in years and probably won't go back anytime soon. Salad was basically a lettuce mix with nothing else? Added shrimp was ok. I guess a restaurant can cruise on a reputation that they once had for awhile(?) until folks realize it's just not that same restaurant anymore. Still a cute venue. Bottom line an overpriced mediocre hospital cafeteria meal that could have been a good meal with a little bit of TLC (tender loving care)...

The service was great and our waiter was very attentive. And the food came out pretty fast as well. After ordering some wine we started with a cup of gazpacho. My husband really liked it, but i found it a little spicy. However, I really enjoyed the rest of our meal which was a meat and cheese app and pecan crusted trout. My husband and I split both and cleaned our plates. While dessert was tempting we had eaten a lot of candy on our drive to Asheville so decided to skip it. Overall, it was a nice first casual meal and we didn't even have to get dressed up which was nice after a long car ride. I found Chestnut on Yelp and decided to wander in. The space has this elevated modern rustic vibe with a southern twist and a little bit of sass. They even sell shirts that say neither hoity nor toity, which cracked me up. Honestly, the atmosphere was great, but our waitress was the real star. She was absolutely phenomenal and looked after us perfectly. My palate was pretty fried, so I started with a Bloody Mary to wake up. Truth be told, it was just okay. The house mix had an odd flavor that nobody at the table could quite identify, and it seriously lacked spice. It was just kinda bland. I noticed a bottle of Firewalker hot sauce on the table, and splashing that in helped a little bit. After that, I transitioned to a mimosa. You really cannot mess up a mimosa too much, and it was a solid, reliable second drink. For the main event, I ordered the southern chicken and waffles. This came with a fried chicken breast sitting on golden malted waffles, smothered in sausage gravy, and drizzled with chipotle honey. It was a really great dish. The kitchen did a solid job with the fry on the chicken, and the gravy had a nice flavor. It leaned a little on the sweet side because of the honey, but it was not totally overdone. The real sleeper hit of the morning, though, was the side of cheesy grits. Those grits were absolute heaven. They were incredibly creamy and perfectly seasoned. If you go, you have to order them. Chestnut is in a great location, and despite the weak Bloody Mary, it was a stellar visit.

Worth Planning Your Asheville Trip Around…read more As a Bay Area foodie, navigating around San Francisco's incredible restaurant scene taught me to appreciate thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients, and genuine hospitality. Chestnut had been on my Asheville dining list long before I arrived, and after spending several days exploring Boone, Blowing Rock, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, I made it my dinner splurge before heading home. It absolutely delivered. A quick tip: skip the hunt for street parking and head straight to the garage across the street. The first hour is free, and downtown Asheville can be congested with both vehicle and foot traffic. I arrived around 5:30 without a reservation and was warmly greeted by the hostess, who offered me a table or a seat at the bar. Asheville was surprisingly hot and humid compared to the cool mountain weather I'd been enjoying, so the air-conditioned dining room was an easy choice over the sidewalk patio. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Fresh flowers, warm lighting, elegant stone countertops, comfortable booths, tables, and bar seating create an atmosphere that feels polished without being stuffy. What stood out most was the mix of guests. There were locals greeting staff by name, couples enjoying date night, families with children, and older guests gathering with friends. It felt welcoming and comfortable for everyone. As a solo diner, the bar was the perfect choice. I enjoyed all the energy of the restaurant while still having a peaceful dining experience. I started with a glass of Brut Rosé from Spain. Crisp, refreshing, and beautifully balanced, it was the perfect way to settle in after a warm afternoon. Then came the Lobster Bisque. As someone who has made lobster bisque from scratch, I know the work that goes into creating a great one. Chestnut's version, made with Oak & Grist Reserve Cream and finished with fresh chives, was outstanding. Rich, silky, velvety, and loaded with tender pieces of lobster. If I'm being incredibly picky, I would have enjoyed just a touch more sherry, but that's purely personal preference. The smaller serving vessel kept the bisque hot from first spoonful to last, which I appreciated. My only complaint was that I wanted a larger serving because it was that good. For my entrée, I ordered the 4-ounce Petite Filet. The steak arrived cooked a perfect medium rare with excellent flavor and texture. It was served with butter-whipped mashed potatoes, haricot verts, a crisp potato gaufrette, red wine demi-glace, and chive butter. Every component was thoughtfully prepared. The demi-glace added richness without overwhelming the beef, while the potato gaufrette provided a delicate crunch. My only minor critique was that the plate could have been served a bit hotter, but the quality of the food more than made up for it. One of the highlights of the evening was the service. Taylor, part of the management team, was personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. After my sparkling wine, he suggested a half-glass pour of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since I was driving. Excellent recommendation. The wine was elegant, earthy, and beautifully balanced, pairing perfectly with the filet. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled quickly. Watching the staff greet regulars by name and efficiently manage the growing crowd spoke volumes about how well-run the restaurant is. You could tell many guests were repeat customers, which is always a good sign. After dinner, I attempted to walk off my meal through downtown Asheville, but the summer heat quickly convinced me to head back to my hotel. I left full, happy, and already thinking about that lobster bisque. For a Bay Area foodie who plans entire trips around memorable meals, Chestnut exceeded expectations. Great food, thoughtful service, an inviting atmosphere, and a dining experience that felt special without trying too hard. If you're visiting Asheville, put Chestnut on your list. Life is too short for mediocre meals, and this one is worth making time for.
