I didn't realize that the #Magnolia properties are closed on Sunday, so I found other fun ways to get the Waco hospitality from the moment I arrived. I was actually glad that I got to see the town for what it is a few days before people traveled there from all over for #Silobration. I look forward to returning to Waco for a longer visit! I booked this tour through the Viator website and the tour group was really responsive from the beginning. I was actually concerned that my bus arriving to town might cause the tour to be delayed if they waited for me, but they were so kind with accommodating my schedule. It all worked out as it should timewise. I really enjoyed learning about Waco from Shannon and Don's perspective. First of all they are super friendly and welcoming and make you feel like neighbors! They shared stories of individuals from this small town who had done great things. They talked about big natural disasters that the town overcame! They showed us the natural beauty of the area around the zoo, and the rivers around town. I loved the college town feel too that made me long to go back to those college days. I also got to see several of my favorite fixer upper homes as we drove through town - many of which are now airbnbs! I don't want to spoil all that they shared, but I highly recommend their tour and will definitely return to do their river sunset tour. I also really appreciated that since they knew I was on foot and trying to get to the Dr Pepper Museum before they closed in less than an hour, they offered to drop me off there, which is not the normal ending point for the tour.

The reason I didn't give it a full five stars is because it's mainly a driving tour. It's hard to hear the commentary from the back of the bus; and, we only stopped twice: once to see Common Grounds and get a drink, and the second to stop in a park to see a view. It was quite chilly in their Sprinter; and I would have preferred to have more places to explore from outside the vehicle.

With the Waco Wine Tour you get to stop at three wineries and sample about 5-6 samples at each winery. There is also a stop at a vineyard (and unfortunately we didn't go at the right season), but you get to see where all the vines and grapes grow, as well as have a delicious snack from a nearby market! I found some great wine I liked and our tour guide Joey was amazing! Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and answered every random question we could think of. He let us have alone time, giving us the right amount or privacy, but was always engaging and positive when we wanted to include him in girl time. I'm so glad I got this as my first wine tour experience, and if I'm ever in the area, I will have to come back and take the tour again... as well as buy some delicious wine!

The otter swim/playtime experience was originally what drew us, and it was even better than I'd imagined. Worth every penny! Then we got to feed and pet the capybaras, which were way friendlier than I thought they would be! The babies enjoyed some extra belly rubs too. Bottle feeding the kangaroo was so fun too- little Dundee was SO soft and loved all the pets, even gave us kisses! The giraffes were super friendly and greeted us every time we were nearby; feeding and getting quality time with them was an extra treat. The safari ride tour was also amazing- 5 of us fit comfortably and got to feed/see lots of animals that we wouldn't normally get to experience. We were surprised at how this place wasn't crowded at all in the middle of July when it is peak vacation season, so it really felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. They also have a beautiful main lodge area that is comfortable and welcoming with additional animals to enjoy.

This small town has kept out intruders like Wal-Mart in order to maintain a preserved atmosphere that is very appealing. The pace is slow here. I passed through Albany years ago and was intrigued by some interesting sculptures in the courtyard of an old jail that had been converted into an art center. It was closed that day so, when I had some time recently, I drove the three hours from Dallas to try my luck again. What kind of art do you think is displayed here? Nope. You're wrong. A small gallery of Renoir, Modigliani, van Gogh, de Goya, Delacroix, Boudin, Munch, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Pissarro... well, I could go on but this list is enough to make any art lover pause. It's not all paintings. There are some fascinating sketches and preparatory drawings. There are also very good small collections of Mexican and Asian art. Exhibitions of modern art have a place here, too. One room has local and western artifacts that provide context into Albany itself. In spite of all the great art here, I will never forget the two 19th century childhood dolls of Celia Mae Terry Nail. Comprised of nothing more than cotton, string, and ink, these are literally rag dolls. It's a heartbreakingly direct window into what it was like to be poor during those times. A toy, any toy, was obviously an out-of-reach luxury so a humble rag had to suffice. That this is called an art center and not a gallery or museum is apt because the Old Jail Center occupies a special place in the community. During my visit, I watched children finishing their art projects for the day. On a wall were a series of 'giving trees' painted by an elementary school class. Unfortunately, in today's United States, art does not always play a central role in communities. It was reassuring to see that in such a small place as Albany, art is a cultural touchstone. I look forward to future visits.
