Man, if there is one thing to do when you visit Abilene, it has to be to come here and check out…read morethis unique museum. I was in town and killing time before meeting up with some people in the evening, and came across this as an option. I swung by and was thoroughly impressed. The young man behind the counter was friendly and walked me through where I'd be going and what I'd be seeing. I was the only one in the "next group" for the intro video, and he even delayed the start time since I ran to the restroom before roaming the grounds. They have an impressive display of artifacts ranging from early Texas all the way through the frontier days, including a very impressive array of historic guns towards the end. They have interactive kiosks and hologram displays where actors portray historical figures and tell "firsthand" accounts of what was experienced on the frontier, right out of the accounts left by those people beforehand. There's a second theater towards the end of the museum that's a lot more immersive. You have to rotate around in a swivel chair as the story is told from all around you, and there's lights and sound to really sell you on the experience-- all from the comfort of your air-conditioned chair. I don't plan on being back in Abilene anytime soon, but if I ever was back with friends, I'd take them here to check this place out.

Excellent displays of artifacts from the early days of Texas. Quality movies portraying how Texas…read morechanged and the demise of the buffalo. Very sad, but made way for cattle. Good coverage of the Native Americans and their culture. It was seriously the best kept museum I have seen. And many hands-on elements. Definitely worth a visit if in the area. The staff were very friendly as well!

If you EVER happen to drive by Abilene (on your way to Midland, maybe?), do NOT overlook this…read moreamazing piece of Texas history that this amazing community has managed to preserve the village and transform it into a museum that allows children and adults alike to go back in time. You can view one of the first washing machines, enter a dentist office (which to me looked more like a torture chamber), visit the school, post office... AND the train station which (if i am correct) was efficiently operational for no more than a dozen years. Considering the fact that part of the exhibition is outside, it would be best NOT to go in the middle of the summer season and AVOID the hottest hours of the day (which, strangely go from 3 PM till late at night). So... put BUFFALO GAP and its museum into your navigational system as a pit stop back in time for a WILD WEST EXPERIENCE.. you shan't be disappointed!

Stopped here on a road trip across Texas and I'm glad we did! The people who own this place have…read moredone a great job rescuing different buildings from around the area, preventing them from being torn down or lost to time as cities and towns continue to expand. We grabbed our tickets at the visitor center and then used the pamphlet they gave us to do a self-guided tour which worked perfectly! It was easy to follow the map and match it up to the descriptions so that we could learn about each building as we walked through it (or peeked inside if it was closed for renovation). A great place to stop and stretch your legs!

This is one of the best war museums I have ever visited. What makes this WW2 museum stand out is…read morethe more intimate and personal look at that time and those who served. This museum focuses on those who served in the 12th Armored Division of the Army. Most pictures and artifacts all have stories to go with then that tell how the veteran acquired them. The pictures are not only glimpses into the past, but the thought and feelings of those in the pictures . The pictures of soldiers are not just empty faces , they have names often indicating if they lived, were wounded, or died. Some of the stories are funny like the ones about the SA uniform found on a 10yoa and the armor plate L4 grasshopper story or heart wrenching like the display of the western union telegraph or the Holocaust section. The artwork on the walls and the dioramas add to the ambience. The basement floor was an unbelievable and magnificent surprise with its Miniature displays of the battles of Herrlisheim. I could have spent over an hour in that area alone, reading all the stories and examining all the minute little historical accurate details of each diorama. If you are into military history, Texas history or WW2 history, you will love this place. The people that work here are also awesome. The emotions and work put into this museum gave me chills, I felt goosebumps even after leaving.
