Horrifically bad pharmacy. I have problems every single time I try to fill a prescription. I had to have my doctor send an antibiotic script to them 3 times, and each time it was sent, the pharmacy cancelled it. When I called (3 times) to ask why, they told me my doctor had never submitted the script. Well, I can see in the Walgreens app that it was submitted and cancelled. Why would the script be in the app if it was never submitted? I finally switched to CVS and tried to have all my prescriptions transferred over, but CVS is unable to get in touch with the pharmacist at Duane Reade, so I have to have all my scripts sent over again from my doctors. Really terrible service, incompetent. Go literally anywhere else. read more

The worst pharmacy I ever used. I have had an easier time solving issues with my insurance. Avoid. I had to use this pharmacy due to my insurance. Among the nightmares: 1. This pharmacy changed my rx without either mine or my doctor's approval. I picked my meds and it was the incorrect amount. 2. I received false information from a clerk, who told me they could not refill my rx because they "could not open the box" due to the my amount vs the amount in the box the med comes in (???- I don't know I just filed a complaint w the corporate office ) 3. Next day -A pharmacist tech told me I closed out my account, so they couldn't refill it. Complete lie, unless someone went in, closed it out cause I complained and violated my patient rights, as this was the only local pharmacy my insurance would cover...so that's lie. Filed another complaint 4. Later that day-The pharmacist told me she try to do whatever (clearly shook from my complaints) to refill the wrong amount again. After several days, I finally received the correct prescription 5. on 5/21 my doctor sent a different rx to them, I never heard from them. My hospital's pharmacist has confirmed they did indeed receive it that day 6. On 6/2 I called and the auto prompt told me I had no orders, sent me to the pharmacy where I was on hold for 20-30 minutes (they would pick up and put me back on hold several times w/o saying a word) I complained again as this seems a bit odd. 7. Today, I receive 2 duplicate e-mails for the previous rx at 2k . It's not time for that refill and I have insurance so ..I have no clue what that group is up to So, they either lost my rx or did something else-I dunno all I know is I don't have my meds It's just a matter of time before their lack of professionalism harms a patient. I want to acknowledge the staff of the Pharmacy who are very nice considering the computer system is a nightmare. It's constantly down, randomly cancels prescriptions after they're approved, and doesn't communicate at all with the Duane reade app, which would really help the overworked staff. Instead of just being able to order my refills on the app, I have to show up or call - today I waited over 30 minutes to talk to someone to find out why the medicine I had approved yesterday and should have been able to pick up was cancelled by the system. I just want to acknowledge Amanda in the pharmacy department. It was really busy, and a lot of customers, including myself, had complicated needs that required keeping track of a lot of information and thinking outside the box. Amanda was so calm and competent, making sure everyone's needs were addressed fully while staying positive and keeping things moving. That is the kind of situation when most of the time people start getting really grumpy and impatient and it can feel like there's no one in charge keeping things together, and it was really comforting to have such professionalism. Why can't I leave less than one star? I didn't think it was possible, but somehow this place continues to get worse. Perhaps they should be commended, most pharmacies would probably be content with being the most inept in the 5 boroughs, but obviously that's not enough for these guys. I can only assume they heard about some other pharmacy on the planet with worst customer service than theirs and they just had to respond by saying 'hold my penicillin,' call me to let me know my prescription was in, and then put up 'Pharmacy Closed Signs.' I tried to call the store twice to just ask a general question. The first time I was put on hold for 12 minutes, with a recording telling me every 15 seconds that the staff was busy handling other calls but to hold on and someone would be with me shortly. I called back and asked for a manager - and I was forwarded to that exact same recording. After 5 minutes of the same, I hung up. This is the worst-run franchise I've ever seen (as shown not just by my experience but by many others on this site before me) - I hope someone at corporate reviews any of these reviews, and does something about it - this neighborhood deserves better. read more

Often there are long pharmacy lines and a very long wait to get a pharmacist on the phone at this DR branch, but today was the worst--I tested covid + today and needed to fill 3 prescriptions. A friend went to pick up my RX, but when she came to this Duane Reade about 5:30, the pharmacy (supposed to be open to 8pm) was closed "due to an emergency." I give DR credit for calling me about 1/2 hr later to say they were out of the antiviral and I would need to get it from 94th St or 72 St branches. I called 94th St, got through to a pharmacist within a few minutes, she confirmed they could fill the prescriptions tonight within about an hour. A friend is picking up the 3 prescriptions. I may transfer all my prescriptions to the 94th St branch, though it's less convenient, because I appreciate their inventory, their responsiveness and their later pharmacy hours. read more

I had a really good experience at this location on Friday. I came in to mail a FedEx package and was told by the company I was shipping my item back to that I could simply drop it off and Duane Reade would print out the labels, which was incorrect. Latasha Howard, who was helping me on Friday, went above and beyond and did me a huge favor; she helped me print out the labels at this location anyway and get my item mailed out. She didn't have to do that; in fact, my experience is that most people will not go out of their way if it is not in their job description. Latasha is a great employee and I really appreciate it. This is the kind of person that should be hired because it makes me want to shop here. I have had terrible experiences in the past 10 years at Duane Reade and honestly rarely shop here anymore, but this experience made me rethink my choice. Thank you! read more

Very difficult to communicate with. If you try to call them, they typically hang up on you after 20 minutes of hold time. If you come in to pick up your prescription when its supposed to be ready they tell you come back later. read more

The "system is down" on a weekly basis at the pharmacy. How is that even possible? In the store, half of the inventory is locked behind plastic shutters but it takes literally 5-10 full minutes for an employee to meet you and unlock it for you. Both the pharmacy line and the checkout line move at the same snail's pace regardless of whether there is 1 person in line or 25 people in line. There are other Duane Reade's on 94th and 111th. Just go to those instead to save yourself the frustration. read more

What's the deal with everything being locked up? It would be better to hire a security guard and fix your security system than have paid staff trying to open locked cases. Might as well order online. This place has undergone one of the rolling city-wide Duane Reade upgrades. Thank goodness. I had been to it a few times pre-renovation, and...well, it was a relic. There are now bright, shiny aisles and bright, shiny...well, everything! It's got everything else a typical Duane Reade has. Need I elaborate further? However, service can be hit or miss, though good more than bad. One time, I purchased items, was rung up, then as my receipt was handed to me, the cashier yawned and stared blankly ahead for a few seconds. Then, he causally walked from behind the counter and stated, "I need the bathroom," to no one in particular. In the meantime, the five items I purchased sat by the register, un-bagged. The other cashier looked both horrified and embarrassed. He quickly and very sincerely apologized as he bagged my items up. "I'm sorry," he said. "A manager should know better than to do that." The pharmacy is horrible. I booked an covid vaccine appointment for my mom. But the store stuff refused to give her the covid vaccine, saying they can only give to people with insurance or state Id. My mom is on a visitor visa so she does not have a NY state ID or insurance! The government is trying to vaccinate as many people as possible, yet this pharmacy turn away people who want to be vaccinated. This is crazy! I'm so angry and disappointed. read more

Truly the worst. The pharmacy staff is uneducated about basic medicine, slow, inefficient and rude. The pharmacist there constantly tries to give me the wrong brand of my prescription even though the prescription itself specifically mentions the brand. I spend at least 5-10 minutes fighting with her about the fact that I need a specific brand. I've had to have my doctor call and still she refuses to do her job correctly. This store gets worse every day. I really like the people in the pharmacy, but it is a terribly managed and stocked store. They have very few items they used to have. And they have the audacity to push Walgreens brand by LOCKING UP others. And it is poorly organized and stocked, as I said. Used to be a decent place to shop before Walgreens took over. I called to find out if I could come in for a free flu shot, the woman I spoke to said, yes, so I walked over. When I got there, they said they didn't take my insurance. I told them I just called, and the woman said come over, and said nothing about insurance. Free flu shots, but they don't take your insurance, and don't mention it over the phone, and don't apologize when you get there and they don't give it to you. read more

I have had repeated troubles with this store and its pharmacy. They cannot keep a pharmacist which means if no pharmacist shows up for work, your prescriptions are literally held hostage until one shows up (which can be days!) No exaggeration. I was forced to move all prescriptions to another nearby pharmacy. The store manager was not only nasty, but of of little help and the employees told me after he walked away that I caught him on a good day. No wonder I never see the same faces working there when ever I would go in. read more

Pros: The staff was nice enough, and the pharmacist (or pharmacy assistant, or whatever he is) was helpful. Cons: The stock. It seems that they are out of stock of approximately 1/3 of the items on my list every time I go in. And not always the same items. I don't get it. I've been getting my prescriptions filled here for many years and have always found the pharmacists, their assistants, and the whole staff very friendly and helpful. Whatever problems I've encountered always turn out to be because of some weird rule or procedure with my insurance company. I have to shout out to Astro, who works in the pharmacy. He's always been amazingly nice and unfailingly helpful. Many of the staff members speak Spanish and, although that's not something I need, it's good to know that they're there for customers who need it. The store underwent a big remodel a few years ago and it's bright, clean, and full of useful and tasty items at a fairly reasonable price. Although the store is owned by a big corporation, I've been dealing with mostly the same people for as long as I can remember. It's my neighborhood drugstore. If I'm picking up a prescription, they usually bring it to the counter when they see me coming. read more

I am fed up with this place. I used to go there frequently, but now I can't stand to and the only reason I do is to get a prescription. The manager and the cashiers and pharmacy staff are all really nice and helpful. I have no complaints about them. Except the store in general has gone downhill the past year or so. It's dirty, cluttered, people are allowed to bring dogs in and let the dogs sniff around and lick the merchandise (I don't mean seeing eye dogs, either, I mean regular dogs), kids and even adults roller blade and ride scooters around the aisles, running into people, and people who aren't customers are allowed to just hang out there. That place has turned into a hot mess and it's a real shame. I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Buyer beware ....if you are using a pharmacy this Duane Reade (and pretty much every other Duane Read) is simply the worst. The store itself is fine for sundries and toiletries, but DO NOT fill your prescriptions here if you can do anything to avoid it. Rite Aid down the block is a bit scummier but the people there are a billion times nicer (and still, i wouldn't even call THEM nice, just nicer than the scumbags that work at Duane Reade.) read more
