I walked into DryBar today planning to return my mixologist curling iron that I purchased right before the New Year. I grew up in Summit and my family has been living here since 1995. I've shopped and made appointments various times at this specific DryBar as it is a 5 min drive from my house but never again will I. I had a very disappointing, hurtful and most importantly racist encounter with Antoinette Moussab. I walked in and told her the issue I was having with my mixologist tool (each time I plugged it in it would flash "off") and clearly it was defective. I was hoping to do a simple return. From start to finish she was rude, abrasive and unwilling to help me even though she was sitting at the front desk. She very aggressively told me to "call drybar because there is nothing I CAN DO" and she kept repeating herself over and over again so I stood there on my phone researching their policy and what warranty program she was referring to. A white woman who had just finished getting her hair down walked up to check out and Antoinette could not have been nicer to her - it was as if she had transformed into a new person - her voice was higher, she was way more pleasant and willing to help this white woman. I thought to myself is this the same woman who I just spoke to??? Following, Antoinette said she had asked me what my phone # was but I never heard her ask that (also keep in mind she had initially put the work on me to fix this problem rather than do her job and credit me my refund for the defective product I was sold). My gut tells me her initial reaction had to do with my skin color but MAYBE she was having a bad day regardless she is the manager of the store and should be treating each and every customer of hers with respect. From the moment I walked in there all she did was treat me as if I was nothing. So I got fed up - here I am standing at the register alone, calling DryBars 1800 #, shes threatening me, yelling at me, telling me to get out of her store, calling the police etc. I told her to call the police (which she ultimately did). They arrived and told me there was obviously no reason for them to be here. Here I am a customer trying to return a defective product and here she is a "manager" throwing me out of her store and calling the police. We see this all the time in the news white women feeling a sense of power/entitlement over minorities and thinking they can just call the police when things don't go there way. She didn't know who she was dealing with. I am from Summit, Antoinette is not and we don't behave this way in this town and most certainly not in public. That said I won't blame her for everything - do I regret dropping one f bomb?? Yes I do! Do I regret calling her a fool?? YES. But do I regret sticking up for myself and not letting her foolishness get in the way of my day??? No. That is why I stayed there, allowed her to throw a hissy fit and call the police. The police arrived (utterly confused) and ultimately they were able to return the mixologist product that I had purchased at that store *a 5 min drive* from my home. I'm sure the officers being a group of white men helped facilitate that return. Oh and on top of all of this she assumed I was white - ha! And I know this because she told me that. We live in a very racist, ignorant world and I would expect the DryBar in Summit to do a better job of monitoring who they employ especially when it comes to managers. You have a staff filled of black, latina & white women but if your manager has an issue with race it will ultimately trickle down. I've reported Antionette to DryBar corporate as her behavior was astonishing and sickening, but I hope Antoinette's higher ups at the Summit location have the integrity to pursue further action here. read more
