However, I'm happy to report that I dined here recently and had a better experience. Since the time of my initial review, La Casa remained in my periphery - mainly because my parents periodically visited and it was a frequent stop of one of my friends who lives in Bronxville. That being said, I was curious to check out La Casa again - and that opportunity came when my mother chose here to celebrate Mother's Day. La Casa is located just off the main commercial strips. The interior is pretty spacious with a bar towards the front of the restaurant and the main dining room split in two sections. The decor is somewhat under-toned with a cool color scheme and tasteful decor. This is in contrast with other Mexican restaurants that tend to go overboard with the kistch and warm colors. I will say the seats look a little tired, they could use some re-upholstering - and were a little lower to the ground than I expected. In addition to the indoor space, they have an outdoor section which was done up very nicely. The brunch menu contained a selection of apps, sides, quesadillas, tacos, and sides. We decided to start by splitting a few apps: brisket and al pastor tacos, a quesadilla, street corn, chips and guac, and more guac with tuna. All the apps were tasty - the biggest standouts for me were the quesadilla and the tacos which were all generously filled and had good flavor. For my main, I got the camarones a la diabla which were shrimp in a red pepper sauce placed atop beans and paired with bok choy. The dish was pretty good - the shrimp could have been a bit snappier, but I appreciate that they de-shelled them and the sauce and beans worked well with them. Dare I say the bok choy was the star of the dish? It had just enough flavor and added a needed green. We opted for dessert, and I got the grilled pineapple which was paired with (per the menu) vanilla ice cream or guanabana sorbet. I wasn't asked to choose, and was served the sorbet. I would have liked to have been given the option, but maybe that's all they had - fwiw the sorbet was good. The pineapple was candied and came as a large, thick ring - definitely needed a knife and fork to cut it up (which they provided); this was a good dish in concept but I think it can be executed better. Service was good, everyone was friendly and efficient. In my experience, service tends to be the weakest component of a meal on a holiday, but they did a great job. Overall, I had a good experience at La Casa. Even though it's not in my backyard, I would definitely return if the opportunity presented itself.

It was around 3:30 PM on a Sunday and the place was practically empty -- only two tables occupied outside and one inside. I ordered a burrito bowl, which came out to $20 after tax, and sat down at one of the outdoor metal tables to eat. A woman from behind the bar came outside and, in a very rude and dismissive tone, told me I was not allowed to eat there and essentially kicked me out. There was no politeness, no explanation, no attempt at hospitality whatsoever. What made it even worse was that I ended up having to eat my food sitting on the street next door after just buying it from them. It was honestly embarrassing and completely unnecessary, especially considering how empty the restaurant was. The unfortunate part is that the burrito bowl itself was actually very good. But when the service is rude and you make a paying customer feel unwelcome and embarrassed, it ruins the food. A good meal stops feeling enjoyable when it comes attached to that kind of treatment. Customer service matters just as much as the food, and after the way I was treated, this became an instant 1-star experience for me. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this one guaranteed I won't be coming back.

By that time I was full but managed to leave a small spot for my entree of steak and shrimp fajitas. It came out smoking hot (you can see the smoke in my picture), nice crispness to the veggies and the steak and shrimp seasoned to perfection! It came with guacamole, sour cream, rice and black beans. I also have to give a shout out to the service. I was checked on the entire time I was there and I really enjoyed both the food and the service. We were almost happy to know an 'authentic' Mexican restaurant closer to home. However, we have had better authentic Mexican in NYC and California. 3 stars - - - minus 2 for greasy fried empanadas that tasted like the oil was old and dried up aged chicken.
