Last week I went in and ordered take out as they would not take my order over the phone. I found out why. Without notifying me they took the "liberty" of adding an 18% gratuity to my bill! For what? Pretty authentic Japanese food in Truckee. Conveniently located not far off 267, great place to stop by for a bite after a day of skiing at North Star. Very extensive sushi menu and some Japanese dishes. We loved the sashimi combo, pretty fresh, tempura udon is our kids favorite although the noddle they use is not really udon but kids can't tell haha. We also orders salmon Kama, some hand rolls and my favorite is the grill beef over rice, it's pretty delicious and fyi it's a bit spicy. It's been a long time since I last visited. We used to order Bento Boxes for lunch after skiing. No more Bento Box...in fact our waitress (relatively new to Drunken Monkey) had never heard of that on the menu. It was a Sunday and two of us arrived for lunch at 12:30. We were greeted and seated. Our water, wasabi and a generous portion of ginger was delivered to table. The music was very loud and actually unpleasant (although the tunes were to our liking). The Miso soup was not what I really like. It had carrots and was a thicker broth than what I like. It was very tasty and good quality...just not to my liking. The Donburri sweet pork bowl and a meat Tapas with vegetables was excellent with complex flavors. I will order again. Service was friendly and professional. We are BIG fans of Drunken Monkey in Truckee. We haven't been in for a little while & decided today would be a great place for lunch. We were seated & ordered from our nice server. As we were waiting for our food we started to kind of look around & as we did we noticed the restaurant is filthy! It appears no one has ever looked up or has cleaned throughly since who knows when... The heater vents on the ceiling have what appears to be black mold coming out of them all over the ceiling & walls. The chairs & tables (legs, edges, cushion backs) are covered with crazy amounts of disgusting grime as the sun shined in. The light fixtures & inside windows are gross. The inside window ledges are looking beat up & wore out. The place is looking gross & made us worry about the food coming out of the kitchen. Who knows what it looks like back there - Eek!! I don't think we will be back which is a bummer cause it was one of our favorite places to eat. Seems the owners or manager don't worry about cleanliness- yuck! read more

This place has really changed for the worse. We came last night and was told there would be a thirty minute wait. That was no problem as we expected to wait. The issue was that over an hour later we were still waiting for our table. Eventually we were seated and then waited even longer to even put in our drink orders. The waitress came around and quickly took our whole order. And then came back a few minutes later to tell us they were out of what we wanted. Our food came out so sporadically it just didn't make any sense. On top of that we got some of our food before our drinks arrived. We received all our meals over a thirty minute period. First one persons meal, five minutes later another, and then twenty minutes later my wife and I got our food. Long after everyone else had finished eating. It's a bummer that this place has gone downhill because the food is good. We'll come back eventually to see if things have improved. read more

We have been coming to this restaurant for more than 6 years every time we visit Tahoe. The food is always exceptional and tasty. The service used to be pretty slow but I'm glad that they are staffed and speedy! The restaurant is not very big so expect long wait times but it is worth it. Totally recommend! read more

Went here and got seated at large table. Chairs were all completely broken down and just made your legs go numb the longer you sat there. Two of water glasses had large lipstick stains. Service was horrible. All the servers seemed to enjoy chatting at the bar with two women to talk crap about their customers and coworkers more than they actually liked helping their customers. The waitress wouldn't take our entree orders when she dropped off the appetizers for some reason and finally after 20 minutes we flagged someone down separately. Waited another 20 minutes for our first couple entrees then it took another 30 minutes for the rest of our food to get there, super awesome!! Then we were given our check, no apology for bad service, no discounted appetizer, just an auto gratuity of 20% applied to the bill and for the cherry on top no one would come run our card so after 15 minutes of waiting I had to go flag down a busboy to take our card. Overall experience took 1 hour and 40 minutes and was $400 for a horrible time. What a joke read more

Great service from Mary. Food was on par for what I expected in the area. Shari a bit too wet sticky and hard to swallow. Similar to some bad retail sushi, cold and hard. Neta slices could use some work. Mochiko chicken a bit too cooked but good flavor. Dan Dan mein too soft noodles broth tasty Chashu don had oversauced rice and too much unnecessary vegetables. Service was extremely slow, drink orders were backed up at the bar and my group was attempting to get a bottle of wine opened for the table which finally occurred mid way through our meal. Corkage was $30. I ordered the ramen with pork and it was terrible. No flavor at all, pork was tough and the noodles were stuck together. Worst ramen I have ever had. Several in my group ordered sushi which was ok. The shrimp tempura was nice and the braised greens were done in a nice sauce.
