Out of all the car rental services I have used, I like Getaround the best for short trips (less…read morethan 1 day). I've used Turo, traditional car rental companies (Hertz, Enterprise, etc.), and Zipcar. I think Truo and traditional rental companies are built more for longer term rentals and Zipcar is the most comparable. The hourly rates for Getaround are fairly reasonable, much better than Zipcar, plus Getaround doesn't charge a monthly fee. However, there is a reason why Zipcar is so expensive: the cars are owned and maintained by the company instead of ordinary people. With Getaround, you're renting out other people's cars and so the company doesn't have full control over the vehicle. It is possible that you may book a car that looks pretty good in the listing but when you get it, it's kind of dirty or not what you expected because the owner doesn't clean/maintain it. That is not necessarily Getaround's fault. For me, I've accepted that this may happen (and it has before), but for the money I save by not using Zipcar, it's fine by me. I have used Getaround so much that I know which cars in my area are clean and well-maintained and I tend to stick to those. If you're not willing to take the risk that a car might not be in perfect condition, then I'd say you should be willing to pay a premium for that. I've had maybe 2 interactions with customer service and both have been very good. I once got automatically charged a lot for gas because the car is parked on a slope and that affected the fuel level recorded after I dropped the car back. I only drove 5 miles in a 22mpg car, but the fuel level recordings made it seem like I used nearly 10% of the gas. I got my money back after explaining to CS via email. Another time I dropped off the car and then when I got to my apartment 2 blocks away I realized I left something in the car. I was able to call a customer service rep via the app and they waited on the phone as I walked back to the car and helped me unlock the car to get the item and lock it back up. Based on all of my Getaround experiences so far I'd definitely recommend it if you're a fairly flexible person with realistic expectations.

INSTEAD their customer service (which is really non-existent) tells you--you need to rent the same car again for an hour--in the hopes your item may still be there..., SERIOUSLY. What BS. NEVER AGAIN.

I appreciated that as I had my family in tow and didn't want to take the morning just to get our car. He took us down to the weird basement parking garage because we had reserved car seats and let us pick the appropriate ones for their ages. Side note, I had tried to call in advance to confirm this but kept getting the national line and they had no real info. For parents reading this, they keep a heap of them and you can specify when you get there, provided you had a general car seat reserved. We got the rear-facing for our 3 year old, and a booster with a back for our 7 year old. Our car (Nissan Altima) was kind of a piece of junk. I'm glad I took video because before we even set foot in it, there were some burns, some fender benders all around, and generally just not in the best shape. Kinda overthinking itself on technology too, with the cruise control and other features not being super intuitive, and CarPlay not working for us throughout our time with it. Anywho, got out of these just fine and dropped it up in Grand Rapids Airport and it got us where we needed to go. Nice to have options in downtown Chicago and this worked out well. Last thing, I booked on Costco Travel which seemed to consistently provide the best overall price and packaging for rental cars in my experience.

She is the kind of person you want on the other side of the desk when you are renting a car. My situation involved needing a rental car delivered to me at an auto repair shop inconvenient to public transportation & cabs etc. Hertz sent a guy out to pick me up with the car the insurance company was paying for me to have while the repair was going on. Nice clean car. Even had a snow brush in the back seat, and there was a toll road transponder if I needed one. Pleasant pickup guy. We had to go to the Wacker location for me to sign paperwork, which went quickly & smoothly. I returned the car directly to the location with no problems except that there was a computer glitch so I didn't get a printed receipt. But Delores emailed one to me.

My vehicle was 1/4 full when I picked up in garage. Called front desk : they said ok return with 1/4. I took pic of gas gauge. Brought car back and two days later got bill for $120 fill up. I looked at their reviews: my, my over a dozen complaints similar to mine about less than full tank at pick up just in last 6 mos !. Now i'm trying to get reimbursed. However, they gave it to us with an empty tank (because their gas pump was "broken"), and while we were able to return it empty it's very inconvenient to have to fill up first thing (especially in Chicago during rush hour). We probably returned it with 2-3 gallons more than it had when we picked it up because who really likes to drive around on an empty tank? 2 stars for the service. The office is tiny, hot and smelled like vomit when we returned the car. The man who checked the car out spoke quickly mumbled and everything under his breath, so we couldn't understand him AT ALL. The man who was there when we returned the car acted like a robot and like his personality had been beaten out of him. It also sucks big time to have to pay an extra $100+ to have another driver on the account, when it costs them NOTHING. I know that's a Hertz-wide issue and not specific to this location, but it's enough to have us look for another car company next time that doesn't charge so much for a second driver.

I'm of the mindset of "she who buys & wraps awkward presents should carry such presents", I also feel that way about over packing lol. However chivalry is not dead and was alive and well this beautiful morning. There was a tiny snafu in my last booking. The driver was given the wrong street (FYI - there is a Wilke & a New Wilke rd lol). It might have been my Palindrome when he called to book or whomever took the booking... not a big deal, mistakes happen. We were expecting a golf club & ended up in a subdivision. My driver was cool about it & thankfully I had brought my destination address with & we got to my location easy peasy with the help of his GPS. My driver also insisted on making sure the venue was open as the parking lot was empty & it looked closed... I had planned on getting there early to help setup. All was well but what a sweet gesture as he was worried about my safety. My driver said I should call the dispatcher to let them know about the discrepancy & I did. The first thing out of the dispatchers mouth was "is this Leah?". The driver had already called & let them know. The dispatcher was super apologetic and really nice. I felt bad because I could tell she was expecting a complete temper tantrum. As I am not 3yrs old & if a simple mistake is the worst that is going to happen today... it makes for a funny story as far as I am concerned. I reassured her all was good, she was really nice. This is why we LOVE Home James, mistakes happen but it is HOW you handle a mistake that sets you apart from the rest.
