Latella is far superior to any of them, and to most other sugary treat options nearby. It appears to still be family-run (seemingly by a different family than was running it a few years ago... but the quality remains high -- they just need to put up some atmospheric photos of the new family's ancestors) and resembles some of the great gelato shops I encountered on the Italian coast. The gelato is great, with a revolving variety of flavors -- something for everyone. Plus, floats and other fun things. Once again, the quality is far superior to any ice cream shop in town. Also, it is particularly wonderful that the shop is usually open, with someone at the counter, during listed business hours. Most other places, and, in particular, those that sell frozen things, tend to close up early when it's cold out (or for any other random reasons, in North Carolina). It is the sign of a great business, and usually a family-run one, that they are available even during slow hours. And much appreciated by customers who enjoy the colder weather, but would still like to challenge their diabetes with some excellent pistachio gelato.
