I got breast implants 20 years ago from Dr Welk and still have them. My results turned out beautifully, The shape was perfect and more natural looking than what I've seen with others surgery, softer rounder at the bottom of the breast , instead of high, round lumps up by the neck line. They still look good but have changed with time as expected. I'm considering to get them replaced after this amount of time and I will definitely have Dr Welk as my surgeon again for this. Dr. Welk is simply amazing! I'll not repeat what others have described in detail. To summarize, he cares, he's brilliant and incredibly detailed, he gives out his mobile phone number to you just before surgery. He REALLY cares! Here's an example. About 6 weeks after my breast reconstruction, a small lump formed under the scar. I live 2+ hours away in Olympia and asked my PCP about it. She palpated it and scheduled me for an ultrasound. As a courtesy, I phoned Dr. Welk's office to let them know what was up, and was put through to his nurse. After consulting with him, she said I should skip the ultra-sound and drive up to Seattle. I resisted, as I was concerned about the 2-hour drive and missing a full day of work. I told his nurse I'll just do the ultra-sound. Well, Dr. Welk phoned me personally to explain why the ultra-sound would be a huge waste of my time and money. He said he could tell more by palpating the lump than the ultrasound. But he didn't stop there. He offered to come into the office early and see me before his first surgery, which would allow me to beat the traffic. If it turned out to be nothing, I'd only miss a couple of hours of work. Well, it turned out NOT to be nothing (but luckily not more cancer). To save me another round-trip drive to Seattle, Dr. Welk squeezed me in between surgeries later that morning. He did a small surgery with a local anesthetic, and I was on my way by 12:00 noon. I'd also like to add that my surgery sites look beautiful. He does lots of wonderful teeny tiny little stitches. My scars have healed wonderfully! As a follow up from my review in February 2021, I thought I would write a second now that my breast reconstruction is complete. I have had serval surgeries since the first with Dr. Welk and what a journey it has been. Dr. Welk is a perfectionist but he met his match with me. Prior to my breast cancer diagnosis and bi-lateral mastectomy (skin sparing but not nipple sparing), I had two breast augmentations and lifts (also known as augmentation mammoplasty and mastopexy). I also had very little concept of what reconstructed breasts would ultimately look like. I naively thought this was my opportunity to get an upgrade. Little did I know that at the end of the day, reconstructed breast are implants with a layer of skin over them, literally. As someone who spent years perfecting her breasts, only to have them deconstructed, I can confidently say the Dr. Welk is Best in Class in terms of reconstruction. I am even happier with the shape then I was with my "Beverly Hills boob job(s)." They also look and feel natural, thanks to lots of little tweaks and a couple rounds of fat grafting. Dr. Welk had his work cut out with me. My expectations were admittedly, unrealistic, but he stood by me with compassion. He is assertive but solution oriented. I just can't say enough about how amazing Dr. Welk and the entire team is at Polyclinic Plastic Surgery. I had a consultation with another Seattle-area surgeon before my appointment with Dr. Welk. After the first doctor tried to convince me "bigger is so much better" I left feeling uneasy (with a $29,000 quote to top it off!) I was born with Poland's syndrome. Not only did Dr. Welk set realistic expectations for me, he and his billing expert (Bernice - she's the best!!) worked their tails off to get my surgery fully approved by my insurance. I'm sure it helps that they don't overcharge like the last guy did... :) I almost cried the day she called to tell me that my procedures were fully approved. Dr. Welk has been a huge advocate and source of support throughout my bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction and chemo. He was recommended by several friends and other doctors we know in Seattle, including a plastic surgeon we know well, who gave him the highest marks. Before the mastectomy he spent two hours walking my husband and I through what to expect and what my reconstruction options may be, depending on how the mastectomy went. He showed us many photos of cases that had gone different ways - mastectomy to expander to future reconstruction, and mastectomy to implants. At this initial consult Dr. Welk also discussed my options in the Seattle area for doing radiation with implants, which not all health systems do. By the time we left we felt so much more prepared and had a full view of our options. Based on this consult, we decided to forego expanders at the time of the mastectomy and instead try to go straight to implants a week later. Thankfully my mastectomy left enough tissue to allow for silicone implants one week after the mastectomy, allowing me to bypass many months with expanders while I completed my other treatments. Dr. Welk is direct, engages me in decision making by offering pros and cons, and is always accessible when I need a consult or have a concern. Dr. Welk has an excellent reputation as one of the top surgeons in Seattle. If you have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are planning to do implant based reconstruction he is the go to guy and the one most often recommended by his peers. I'm saving you a bit of research because trust me, I've done it. Time and time again as I researched surgeons I was told by other doctors in the community as well as other women who had used him, "Dr. Welk is the man you want for implant based reconstruction." Along with "If it were my wife or daughter that needed surgery I would send them to Dr. Welk." That says a lot. A year ago this month while vacationing in Mexico I found a lump in my breast that would mark the end of the world as I've known it. Within weeks I was transformed from a free spirited adventurer, juggling my career, my teenagers, and some travel into a cancer patient with nothing but uncertainty and endless doctor's appointments consuming my life. Any of you newly diagnosed with breast cancer can relate to the ensuing shock, dread, stress and fear that accompany the words: it's cancer. Without warning you're faced with the task of making several life altering, daunting decisions, one of which includes whether or not to go through a lengthy reconstruction process if you are choosing bilateral or unilateral mastectomy as I did. This decision is fraught with many potential complications that are often significantly downplayed during consults by many surgeons. The surgeon you pick will determine not only the ultimate cosmetic outcome but also the various complications that can and very often do happen a long the way. Come prepared to consults having done your homework. Expect honest rather than sugar coated answers designed to distract you from the reality of what you will actually be facing. Accept now that this will be a process that will take place over many months. You will be spending more time with your plastic surgeon than any of your other doctors. Pick someone highly skilled that you both trust and like. I read a statistic once that said 85% of patients go with the first doctor recommended to them, no matter who the source of the recommendation. Don't be that person. Get at least 2 if not three consults and make sure Dr. Welk is one of them. Let me tell you a little more about me to help put this review into perspective... I am a VERY thorough person and a tireless researcher. I also run a group of more than 800 women around the world with breast cancer which includes many doctors, scientists and breast cancer researchers. The information I learned from the intelligent women in my group played into how I went about choosing my surgeon, a process that involved consults with many plastic surgeons here in Seattle as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans. I met with or spoke to at least 10 before ultimately deciding Dr. Welk was the one for me. Knowing what I know now I would never travel to have this surgery done. There are way too many follow up appointments and possible complications to make that feasible. You want your surgeon close by and readily available. While most of the surgeons I consulted with spent a mere 10-15 minutes with me discussing options and attempting to answer my long list of questions without cutting me off, Dr. Welk spent over an hour with me at my first consult and patiently answered every one of my many questions, all after a long day of surgery for him. That is dedication to your patient. I met with him at least one more time and also sent what he jokingly referred to as several "dissertation length" e mails with additional questions before deciding for sure he was the surgeon for me. Here is what I appreciate most about him: 1.) His skill and experience with reconstruction which spans more than 25 years. 2.) His meticulous work and methodical approach to creating the best possible aesthetic outcome. 3.) His absolute concern for risk reduction during and after surgery and a very low personal infection rate. 4.) His total responsiveness to e mail, phone or text to any questions you have before or after surgery. 5.) His great team that all work together like a well oiled machine. 5.)Last but not least, his wit which can keep you entertained throughout an otherwise grueling process of multiple surgeries. He can at times be abrupt and is not the type to hold your hand while you cry about the fact that you have cancer. He is a straight shooter. But he will also make you laugh when you least expect it and isn't that often the best medicine anyway? I am a skeptic by nature and was also terrified of surgery going into this process but I had complete confidence that I was in the best possible hands with Dr. Welk. I cannot recommend Dr. Welk as a surgeon enough. I wish I could adequately put into words the instant happiness, relief, confidence, and gratitude I feel from my breast reduction with him. I literally could not be more ecstatic with the results of this surgery. I am amazed everyday at the thought of how he was able to achieve such a great result that was exactly proportionate to my body. Couple things, first, for people who are looking to get breast reduction, if you are on the fence and are able to consider it, please do. I can't say enough how life-changing it is and what a physical and mental lift it brings to you. Hard to visualize while you're considering the surgery, but the feeling comes soon after. There's a reason surgeons and nurses love this surgery because the patient satisfaction rate is so high! Second, I did my fair and thorough research to find a surgeon in Seattle and it was a long haul and worth it to find him on my own and meet him for myself. However, I know how much reviews can encourage/discourage people to meet with a surgeon, so if anything comes from reading this review I hope it's to meet with Dr. Welk. He is worth it to at least be on the list of surgeons you have a consultation with. He is very thorough and gives you his full attention and I know a few reviews mention his bedside manner and his terseness. I wouldn't let those reviews discourage you in the slightest to meet with him because he was one of the most personable and unforgettable doctors I have met with. He has breast reductions down to a math equation, literally. I felt so confident with him and I can tell you the results show. Right before I went into the surgery room, he put his number in my phone in case of an emergency or question during outside hours. What surgeon gives you that trust? I was that excited to get on here to write about my experience with him (3 weeks post op today) and his team from his nurse to his patient coordinator. His nurse and anesthesiologist were lovely. I was most nervous about the anesthesia and this happened to be my favorite and most calming part. That is a truly well-oiled machine he has in the operating room. Judy, his patient coordinator, is an absolute gem and is on top of everything. She answers right away and was the key player in submitting Pre-Authorization to insurance for approval. Dr.Welk is Incredible! There is simply no other way to put it. I had a breast reduction at the age of 17, the pain was unbearable and Dr. Welk promised he would change that. He performed a breast reduction 25 years ago on my mother and she is thrilled with the way she feels and looks to this day, which says a lot about his work. Not only did he change the way I physically felt but he eased my worries through the whole process. One of the things I worried about was not being able to breast feed which is a possibility with such surgery but his work is precise and comes with a lot of detail and I do not doubt I will be able to in the future, in fact my mother was able to breast feed after he did her breast reduction. I'm a little over 4 weeks post breast reduction surgery. I'd heard Dr. Welk was a little blunt with patients, but I found him to be pleasant and straightforward. He was always on time. He was always honest about the results he could get me. Recovery has been manageable. The first 5 days are the worst, then things improve quite quickly. And now that a lot of the swelling has gone down, I can say the results are amazing. I look and feel like a new person. My constant neck pain is gone. No headaches. And I feel so much better in my own skin. Insurance didn't cover my procedure because I was below the threshold for what they would cover, so it's pricey, but it's probably some of the best money I've ever spent. My only gripe was that I felt pushed out of the recovery room too quickly. I would still recommend Dr. Welk to anyone wanting superior work. read more

That was a wonderful experience with Doctor Welk. He is an intelligent, gifted and honest doctor. I first asked if I should have a face lift, he didn't want just make money from me like some doctors would do, he said I didn't need it. My tummy was a bad shape so I had a tummy tuck with him. My experience with Dr. Welk was not for cosmetic purposes but for reconstruction following a bilateral mastectomy. I originally was advised by another plastic surgeon that I would have to use silicone implants and that I would lose my nipples. I was introduced to Dr. Welk via a mutual friend and he made time on a Saturday afternoon to spend an hour with me. My friend recommended Dr. Welk to me because he is the doctor that fixes other's mistakes and she wanted me to have the best care possible. He knew that because of insurance purposes I might not even be able to go to him but he still took the time to help me understand my options. Dr. Welk said that based on the location of my cancer that I was absolutely a candidate for nipple conservation. He said there was no reason why I could not use saline implants as well and that he would be happy to work with me if we could make it happen. He is a huge advocate for his patients and wants to ensure everyone has the best outcome possible. I live across the state and he made EVERY effort to be available based on my schedule when I could get into town. He even came in on a Sunday evening the night before my surgery. I read a few other reviews and it's true, he gives you his cell number and he checks in, even from vacation. I always knew when I was in his office his focus was on achieving a perfect outcome. He had to advise me of possible complications as all doctors do but he also knows exactly what he's doing and can change course quickly as needed. He gave me many, many options for the outcome and made sure I was comfortable with MY final choice. I also read about his bedside manner. He is the best, yes a dry sense of humor but a funny, funny dry sense of humor. He is laser focused and maybe that is what some folks have a tough time with. I'll take laser focused any day! The outcome is so worth it! A quick edit on this review from my post about 2 minutes ago, not only is Dr. Welk amazing but his team made sure every aspect of my visit went smoothly. I had an outstanding experience with Dr. Drew Welk and his staff; I would assign a rating of 10 stars if that was possible. He is caring, professional, and was very thorough when discussing my possible surgery. His level of technical skills quickly became evident as we discussed various possibilities for an uncommon issue. Some of the other reviews have referenced Dr. Welk as a 'straight shooter". I totally agree and that characteristic is one of the reasons that I immediately felt he was the right physician to help me. He has changed my life in ways I couldn't have imaged. To say that I am thrilled is an understatement. All of his staff are terrific. I am needle phobic to an extreme and need to give special recognition to Dr. Welk's anesthesiologist Bettie Orr. She was the best I have ever encountered. I think I have really turned a corner due to her partnership and compassion. I was also deeply touched that she was in the waiting room to see me upon my first return appointment. Post surgery, I found him to be very compassionate and supportive. I just got back from my post-op appointment with Dr Welk. I had a breast reduction and lift. I don't think I've ever been this happy about anything on my body before!! I'm almost fifty, nursed 3 kids, and I now never need to wear a bra again! I'M SO HAPPY!! I think the negative comments on a couple of the reviews are ridiculous. Dr Welk is a straight shooter. Dr. Welk is a good surgeon, however I think I was a more complicated case than he thought I was. One area he should get in touch with is leaving his ego at the door. I met with him multiple times and often wondered if he even listened to my wishes and what I was trying to achieve at the end. At the end of the day I ended up removing the implant and starting over again with a new surgeon. The Best in Town! Dr. Welk epitomizes every aspect of how you'd like (deserve, yet difficult to find) a doctor to treat his/her patients. From medical assessment to treatment and bedside manner, Dr. Welk is exceptional. His concern for my condition (30 day open wound, a hole adjacent to shin bone) caused me to immediately do a 180 course correction from the prescribed treatment by another physician (oncology - dermatology related). I love Dr. Welk. I can't help it. Many people may find him lacking in bedside manner, but after a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, I just wanted someone to fix me. His office staff is amazing, kind, efficient and helpful and things run like clockwork. His main nurse, Marilyn, hosts a monthly reconstruction meeting/forum that warmly welcomes all to the scary reality of recreating breasts after a no fun year of healing from cancer. I am possibly the worlds biggest pansy when it comes to surgery, needles etc and I actually went through with a TRAM which basically uses your stomach flesh to create a breast. Betty and Kathy are also amazing in anesthesia and administration respectively. Dr. Welk is also the doctor for people I know who received breast reductions and are extremely happy with their result as well as a few more breast cancer reconstructions. If you need sympathy, comfort and don't appreciate dry humor he may not be the surgeon for you, but if you want a professional who cares about the end product, has a top notch staff and desire efficient scheduling, billing, pre and post follow up then I highly recommend Dr. Welk. read more

Dr. Welk is truly the best plastic surgeon. I had a previous procedure that was botched. I had been told by another surgeon that I could not be fixed and by two others that yes, they could fix the problem and that was it. I brought my surgery report with me every time and Dr. Welk was the only surgeon that read it and asked me questions on what happened. I had such a terrible experience before and Dr. Welk reassured me that I would not go through that again. He was a man of his word and I totally trust him. He does give you his personal number after surgery and he does expect you to use it if any questions or concerns arise. Also I had an questionable concern on a very early Sunday morning, and yes, he met me at his office at 6:30am to check on me. What dr would do that? Dr. Welk that's who. A Dr that cares about his patient. I am just so grateful that I had him as my surgeon. My biggest mistake was not to go to him in the first place. My experience with Dr. Welk was absolutely positive. He was caring, professional, and thorough in discussing my possible procedures. I found him to be conservative, making sure I did not have unrealistic expectations, and that I understood possible risks and outcomes. We also share a similar sense of humor, which is not a necessity, just a bonus. His administrator, Kathy, and his surgical team, Marilyn and Bettie, all were uniformly excellent in educating me on preparation and recovery. He educated myself and my husband about all the options, patiently answered all our questions and spent time making sure we were fully informed on how it would all work. In 2000, I had my silicone implants removed and replaced with saline by Dr. Welk. Fifteen years later, they look and feel fine --no encapsulation or concerns whatsoever. My husband has gone to sea for over 50 years and Dr. Welk fixed his droopy (Bassett hound) lower eyelids. This was a high risk surgery because he lacked elasticity in his skin, and this increased the complexity of the operation. Five years later, he is very happy with the results. He is 73, and looks (and is) youthful. We cannot recommend Dr. Welk enough. We love his wry humor. Let's face it, you don't want an insecure surgeon operating on you. A serious perfectionist, incredibly efficient and an excellent communicator. Dr Welk doesn't mince words and goes for bat for his patients. My insurance denied at first and required a peer to peer review. You know he came back from vacation andIt was the first thing he did his first day back?! That's love. This man is an artist. I love my reduction and lift!! I see lots of pics on real self and on support groups on FB and they don't look nearly as pristine as my beautiful rack from Dr Welk! He has made my life not only more beautiful,but so easy too. No drains, dissolvable stitches, no need for fancy compression bras or post surgical wear. BEWARE of this Doctor! He is the most unprofessional medical Doctor, I went in for a breast reduction consultation. I explained to him I was having body contouring on my back and sides the following day. He proceeded to look up the doctor on his phone That I was having the procedure with and then began to berate him and then telling me all things that would go wrong. I was there for a breast reduction he then exaimed me then had me go to his office and discuss further he told me he does not get paid for this since it was a no charge consultation. He then told me this would be covered by my insurance due to the size. He then got back on the topic of my scheduled lipo for the following day. He told me to"SHUT MY PIE HOLE" go on a low carb diet and see him back in 1-2 months after I lost 15 lbs. for the surgery with him and cancel my appointment the following day. I was was crying he had no empathy for what he had just said?! Then he brought up pictures of post surgery and said what size do I want to be? Never acknowledging how hurtful, painful statement he just said to me! I gathered my things and said this consultation is over! Meanwhile I work with a facial plastic surgeon who recommended me to him she was blown away by his behavior and stated NEVER would she refer to him again. Now to find out he has charged my insurance company $406 for the exam that was to be no charge! My insurance company is starting an investigation. Furthermore there was no nurse at any time with us and when I left his office the two at the front desk were not there I walked out crying and completely upset. I am a 45 year old medical professional who has never seen such poor and callus actions from a medical professional. He needs some sensitivity training and bed side manner. He needs an EGO check. This was not my first consultation, there are many other qualified caring and sensitive doctors out there. Beware of this Doctor. read more

I wish I could say I had a good experience with Dr. Welk but that's not the case. I went to him for breast augmentation and was not happy with the results. I was a B cup hoping to be a full C and came out being a full B. When we discussed size prior to surgery we discussed implant sizes of 250-275 CC's. After the surgery my breasts were a bit fuller but there was very little difference, I didn't even have to buy new bras. Im 5'8" and 130 lbs. so the 150CC's he used didn't really make a difference. At my post op visit I expressed my disappointment and he said to wait a little longer, so I waited. After several months when I said I was still disappointed he said to wait a few more months and he thought I would most likely never be happy. This was my first experience with any kind of plastic surgery so I was not expecting this type of response. I made appointments with two other surgeons to get their opinions and they both said they had never heard of using 150 CC's and they couldn't see why a bigger implant wasn't used. It was a big expense and I can't believe I'm faced with doing it again to get the results I was hoping for. I wish I had visited a couple other surgeons prior to having the procedure. read more

I had a small surgical procedure--his work was okay, but I felt he was rude. I also thought his nurses were rude. I would not return there.

I feel so lucky to have met Dr Welk! I can't believe anyone would say he lacks in bedside manner...what the heck? He is very matter of fact and friendly, exceedingly knowledgable in his craft and listened to all my concerns/fears re; breast implants. Choosing to enter childbirth later in my life was hard on my body. After my third baby (almost 11 lbs) I had a severe hernia, diastasis and excess skin. After my previous surgeon had botched my breast reconstruction following breast cancer, I went to see Dr. Welk on my oncologist's recommendation. I told him that I had been through numerous surgeries only to be left with a bad result and that I was not willing to go through more surgeries and empty promises unless he absolutely felt he could give me a better result. And I'm talking a WAY better result. Dr. Welk was candid and gave me all of my options. He was direct and blunt, which some may find off-putting. I found it refreshing. No BS, just straight talk. He agreed that my previous surgeon had done a poor job at recreating a right breast as well as creating symmetry between both breasts. But the statement that convinced me to go forward with Dr. Welk was when he said, "Your previous doctor is a skilled surgeon, but he is not an artist. I, on the other hand, am an artist." I was sold.
