I come in for gas, pay at pump. The place is open. I use my charge card. The pump delivers a please wait message. After waiting 5 minutes I go in the store. No employee anywhere. The managers office was unlocked. No employee at the register. Store room open. I yell (check your camera), no employee, another 5 minutes. No employee. Anything and everything was fair game--sodas, sandwiches, tools, the register, dunkin donuts, you name it. A stoned employee (male) comes out--looked very high maybe opiods. Very red faced, strange expression, glazed eyes and hits something on the register to permit the payment (which should have been auto at the pump anyway) at least ten minutes earlier. This same employee -working weekends, has looked messed up before. Once a friend came in and the same employee (all red faced and weird, made strange comments about my friend's glasses--real nice eh--commenting on customer's appearances). If you want people to come in and shoplift or worse simply figure out when this guy works and it's a shop lifter's paradise. If you expect rolling off the highway people to get gas and go and have good reviews forget it. As a manager, figure out who worked this shift and dismiss the man. I'd check your cash register for his shifts and make sure it's not been light on the cash.

The pumps themselves were pretty good and when I walked into the convenience store I was greeted by the cashier. The issue with this particular Shell location was that the store was tiny, and on top of that they house a Dunkin'. This made it almost impossible to move around. The other minor issue was that trying to get in and out of the parking lot was a nightmare. The traffic was terrible and this station is located at a strange intersection. Besides these minor issues, not a bad place to stop when you need to fuel or grab a quick snack.

While in Holyoke late at night I needed to fuel up so I decided to stop in at Jim's Auto Center…read more This station is one of the smaller stations in Holyoke but it has both full and self serve pumps. This station also is open 24/7 which makes late night fueling easy. The staff here is always polite and whenever I drive by I feel as though they are holding a community event like car washes. In the end this is a decent gas station. It is the one I prefer to go to when in the Holyoke area.

I feel like the true test of a decent garage is how they treat female customers. I am one of those…read morewomen who knows a thing or two about vehicles and vehicle repair, mostly due to being too broke to pay a garage to fix my car, and having mechanically inclined friends assist me in repairing my own car. My alternator went on my car. I knew this. I told them that. Obviously they arent going to take my word for it entirely, they have to be sure. No problem. I asked for them to guve me a ring once they definitively concluded thst this was the issue. I waited until 4pm the next day to call, since I hadnt heard from them. They told me my car was all set and ready to be picked up. Let me interject here that alternators take under an hour to replace, and are usually not a super expensive part, however the alternator for my car was a little pricey. At Auto Zone my alternator was priced at $184. I know garages mark the price up, and I get that. So I assumed they would probably charge me about $250 for the alternator, then an hour of labor at $75/hr (which is on the high end for this area, but ok), so I expected a total of about $350 at most. I called, they told me the car was ready. I asked the total, and was told it was $461.60. Ouch. I reserved my skepticism for the work order, hoping that they fixed something else to come to that total. Nope. $89 for charging my battery and alternator, and $350 for the alternator itself, then tax. Needless to say, that was the first and last trip my car will be making there.

Choosing a new auto shop is a difficult task. So I looked on Yelp to find a place in the area that had good reviews. Pleasant Street Auto only had two reviews, but they also took the time to post their own description. And, I liked the range of photos (I'll admit that I was a bit charmed by the photo of someone spray-painting a dinosaur) and the notion that there would be a place to sit and do work, comfortably, not literally sitting outside on a curb as I've had to do on occasion in the past. I was not a great customer up front, I'll admit. I completely forgot our first appointment, and then I became lost on my way for the remedial appointment. Throughout, the staff was patient and professional with me. I can't say a word about the garage/work area because I never saw it, which felt a little odd, but I could certainly get used to it! I don't have the slightest idea what the machines and tools are for, anyway, and so I don't know that seeing and hearing mechanics work really enhances my experience. Instead, I left my car and keys and waited inside. The front desk manages repair work, body work, and also Hertz rentals. When I made my oil change appointment, I was a little worried that I might have a serious issue discovered, and I might therefore need to rent a car. If this had been necessary, I could have managed it all at one location. Convenient! The oil change didn't seem to take all that long. I should have timed it, but I didn't. I think the total wait - even though I was late for my appointment, was well under an hour. During that time, I tried to take advantage of the homey waiting area with a t.v. (though the cable was stutteringly-intermittent), WIFI that didn't seem to work at all, and computers with internet service that required someone to come in and fix it for it to work at all. The computers were kind of old, dodgy, and dirty, but I was able to do some work, which was great. For families, there are toys and books (for kids and adults) and an area for children to hang out and play. I can only imagine that, since the space is open and adjacent to the desk area, it's not much fun for staff when the space gets "active," but it's very nice an accommodating. Overall, this is a huge leap over sitting on a solitary chair in a drafty space next to a noisy garage, or as said, literally sitting on a curb because there's no indoor seating at all. The best bit was that Lee, I believe a member of the family who runs this business, came out to speak with me personally while they were finishing up with the car. He spoke with me in language that I could understand, but not with condescension. There were a number of potential issues with the car, and he prioritized them for me, but he didn't make me feel pressured in any way. I feel like Yelp helped me to find a great fit for a new auto shop, and it's a great relief. I'd highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants to feel confident about a family-run business that is professional, caring, and extremely well-rounded in terms of services available at a single location. With comfort, too! Great, great experience overall.
