The first thing that hit me when I walked in was a wonderful sent of tangerine, at least I think that is what it was, the smell was heaven. This place was packed today, I know it was a combination of beautiful weather, Spring Garden and March Break. There was no sign of recession in this store. The line went from the cash right to the back of the store. I could not believe it. And no one was blinking an eye at the cost, $58.00 top, $130.00 jacket, $90.00 pants. I do think some people will choke on the prices, but I believe you will get great quality. Either that or half of Halifax has lost their minds, because I have never seen so many people in a store, and no sale going on. The styles and colours here are a step above the others you will find. They had some great selections. There was one jacket I thought was a pretty good price, the $130.00 Rain Jacket.

While I'll admit that at first, I found this to be kind of neat, I have come to find it to be very distracting and lacking professionalism. Inside, the staff members were quite friendly and eager to assist. While I had gone there with the intention of buying a work-out t-shirt, after discovering that one of the cheapest and most basic t-shirts was $58, which by the way was made overseas, I decided against the purchase. I then went and checked out the exercise pants, and while I agree, they were some of the nicest exercise pants I had ever seen, I simply could not justify paying $98 + tax for a pair of work-out pants. Needless to say, I left the store once again, empty handed, and am continuing to wonder how work-out clothing can demand such high prices.

Nestled below a few steps off Spring Garden Road, this jewelry shop requires an extra glance to notice its there. The steps are deep, so be warned--I can see them being tricky for some. Visitors need to press the buzz to get inside, and its immediately obvious that this place isn't for tooting around. Teeny-tiny, but elegantly stated. The exposed brick wall and open workshop give Fawcett's its own hands-on personality. The goldsmith, Blaine, welcomed me kindly and was very helpful in giving me the shop scoop. While the show room displays mainly engagement rings, formal bands and the like, the business is built on custom designed jewelry. Everything is made right here in the shop, behind a wall divider, so as the goldsmith works, you can roam the shop and see him go. Its a different experience, and I liked it. The jewels are too rich for my blood, but maybe some day. Blaine mentioned that they were branching out with some newer and lower price range product, so don't let price stop you from going in for a peek. Overall, the work is excellent and the friendly, personably service seems A +. Open for over 18 years, its no wonder Fawcett's is still kicking.

I obviously didn't work as closely with them as he did, but in my dealings with them since then they have been nothing but polite and sincere - I think they like my ring even more than I do! Re-sizing was free and we are now working on designs for a band to go with my ring. The only thing I can't comment on here is price - my guy refuses to disclose what he spent, but I would imagine it was a lot based on the quality of the stones and the gold work. Pricing is not for the faint of heart, but what you get is quality and craftsmanship. There is no rhodium plating here - you get the real deal. The customer service is also excellent, particularly when contrasted with the service of chain stores.

Every female university student in the city goes through this place in search of a pair of colourful fish net tights in October though, so if you're just wanting to browse, possibly save yourself a few jostled encounters and wait until next week. Great men's selection available too! All of the walls in 'Sock it to Ya' swing open to reveal extra inventory so if you don't see your size, don't assume the shop is too small to possibly have extras.

Add on the fact that all purchases are rung in by hand (debit and credit available - but inventory is managed on paper), and you have a refreshingly low-tech boutique experience. The product ranges from generic to known brands like Calvin Klein, JM and more. While the price tags often look steep ($30 for a pair of underwear), there are often incredible sales that end up leaving you with a bargain on designer finds. Definitely worth checking out!

Even achieving one of these objectives is a challenge on most days. Not at Jennifer's. Every item in the store - everything - is from Atlantic Canada, and most of it is from Nova Scotia. I could have wept with joy. The risk with stocking exclusively local crafts is that it can easily veer into patchouli-scented, rayon-based, weekend music festival territory. Again, not at Jennifer's. Lovely, interesting, well-made products abound. They had a whole corner of ladybug-themed pottery that was reasonably priced and can be used in the dishwasher and the microwave. What else could I want? They had fused-glass kitchen items, Amos pewter pieces and greeting cards. Even the check-out experience was charming. They prop your purchase on an old, wooden counter and wrap it with paper and put it in a box (not plastic). They'll wrap your purchase in cardboard to protect it if you are travelling. I half-expected them to pull out brown paper packages and wrap them up with string... I really don't like shopping, but shopping here was a delightful experience. Pop around the corner to Pete's Frootique for a refreshing beverage after you're done.
