I was chatting with Adelaide-based workmates this week about the 2025 South Australian Baking…read moreAward-winning vanilla slice from The Village Baker. When I looked at the website, I saw they also had a passionfruit icing option. I am a fan of passionfruit icing. My dream icing is pink passionfruit icing, but I've only seen homemade vanilla slices with pink passionfruit icing. When I arrived, I saw in the display that the "standard" vanilla slice was the award winner. In my mind, I needed to buy both versions and eat them. Both vanilla slices are superb. The pastry wasn't soggy. The custard was delightfully creamy and smooth with a vanilla flavour without being too sweet. The standard icing is okay. It's a bit thick for me and a bit too sweet. The passionfruit fudge icing, on the other hand, is fantastic. I love anything sweet and tart. Tarty sweetness makes my lips tingle and "sing". The passionfruit fudge is thick, but it doesn't "feel" thick in my mouth, and it's great to crunch the passionfruit seeds between my teeth. I ate the standard vanilla slice first because I wanted to finish with the tartness of the passionfruit fudge icing. I can appreciate why The Village Baker's standard vanilla slice won this year's baking award. I prefer their passionfruit fudge vanilla slice.

A HIDDEN GEM ON SOUTH ROAD…read more WOW! That's all I can really say.. My wife introduced me to this great little bakery a few months ago, and it's now become a weekend regular. Pulling into the little shopping centre in Blackforest, the place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem. They have a great selection of gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Beef and Bacon Pie! Amazing.. :) Also there selection of pastries and cakes are brilliant, and after walking in there today to find that they now sell CRONUTS! Sweet! :) This is a working Bakery and it is always packed, they are constantly refilling there pie warmer as they always sell out quick, so no day old footy pies here.. I would highly recommend this place next time your in the neighbourhood. :)

What I like best about this bakery is their cakes. I have often bought cakes for birthdays and special occasions from here. Back when my kids were young, it was one of the few places you could buy cakes with fresh cream rather than the artificial sweet copy version. You can choose from a range of cake decorations and sizes and they are extremely good value. They have moved with the times a little, offering cakes with chocolate shards and more modern decorations. So, if you are looking for a value for money occasion cake I would highly recommend this shop.

Since our school wasn't too far from Jetty Road we'd take a short trip up there after school (or - ahem - during school), swing past Wenzel's and buy a different cake or pastry or donut or whatever (all except one of us, who was a health-freak and never ate pastry) and head down to the beach (where the health-freak would try to steal our food and throw it to the seagulls 'four [our] own good'. The selection's fairly standard, but the quality's generally very good. After we exhausted the novelty, though, I find I can't enjoy myself at Wenzel's anymore. Whether I became sick of the food or I miss my friends I couldn't say. Regardless, I don't like eating from there anymore.

This is certainly true of Beck's Bakehouse at Melrose Park. Sitting right on the corner of a roundabout on Winstone and Richmond Avenues, they're not on a main road so you know that all the people who are there are either locals or they've heard just how good this place is by someone else in the know. Having seen the bags stacked up at the front door, its clear they use locally produced Laucke Mill flour for all their baking. And the proof is in the pudding - so to speak. I love their cocktail pies and pasties. In fact their range extends to cocktail sausage rolls, cheese pasties and potato pies - yummy! They have something called a Ned Kelly Pie which I haven't tried yet but I do recommend their potato pies and cheese and veggie pasties - big as well as little. If you go there at Christmas time be sure to give their fruit mince pies a go - you won't regret it. There's nothing glamorous about Beck's Bakehouse just good, hearty pies, pasties, bread and cakes. Don't expect to sit down anywhere so you can devour your purchases, Beck's food is designed for eating either on the run out of the bag, or at home.

Inside is a little treasure trove of baked goods. They make beautiful sweet baked goods filled with fresh cream, pies and pasties also but the main thing people come here for is the bread. They specialise in organic gluten free bread and bake loaves with less well known grains such as spelt and Kamut which are very good for you and especially for those with wheat intolerances. Spelt bread is nutritious, high in fibre and, most importantly, easy to digest. Eve's is actually certified Organic and state that they are South Australia's first certified Organic Bakery. They bake a large range of breads and the ones I have tried have all been delicious. I am yet to try the spelt bread but that will be next one on my list.

I make my selection carefully and rest assured with the knowledge that I won't undo the good I've done with my workout from eating her delicious baked goods. I normally settle on a sweet treat and a rye roll, both to be enjoyed with my lunch. My Mum always told me not to eat bread that dissolves on your tongue. Eve's bread certainly doesn't do that. It's dense, fresh, crusty and baked with love. There's plenty here for the non-vegan as well, I've just never tried any of it.

The team here at Cherry Darling Bakehouse really do work hard to get the message out with their skills in cooking! I have never tried a vegan pie before. I was expecting baked veggies with awesome sauces within vegan pies. Well, no way! This bakery stocks the most awesome vegan creations. Cakes galore, slices, Mac & Cheese pies, Satay pies, Spinach and cheese rolls, roast veg pies, bbq rib pie and hell yes.... a Cheeseburger Pie. I totally could not say no to a cheeseburger pie. As soon as I saw the name, I thought "genius". Did it live up to my expectations? Oh yes it did. Of course it tastes different to a meat pie. But it was so full of flavour with spices in the sauce cooked in with the faux soy meat. They really know how to make a hardy meat taste. The pie was also filled with soy cheese and pickles! So good! The pastry was flaky on the top and short on the bottom. Why have I not been eating these pies forever? My only regret was that I did not try some of the cakes or slices in store. Oh well, any excuse to return! If you have not tried Vegan food before, I would highly recommend starting here. They are brilliant and really friendly.
