Rini was amazing!!! Miracle worker and nothing less. My hair was lackluster and flat. I needed a cut desperately but I had long decided wanted someone who had experience with curly haircuts. I am sharing this experience because I would never want this to happen to anyone. I went in for highlights and I left crying. I have been coloring my hair for decades and yes there have been a few disappointments but there has been nothing like this. My entire head looks orange. There are no highlights. I stated what I wanted and after 3 hours I left with an orange head. I was totally disappointed. James is a really nice guy but considering he has more than 20 something years of experience I thought he knew what he was doing. It was so evident that he didn't know what he was doing. He couldn't even fix it after trying multiple times. Maybe he is better at other things but definitely not at highlights. He was very sloppy too. The dye got on my clothes and stained it. This whole experience was such a nightmare for me. What a waste of money and time. read more

Love James and the way that he colors and cuts my hair . I found him about four years ago and have been going there ever since and have never had a bad cut or color . He is very accommodating with appointments and is probably the best colorist/stylist that I have ever had . I started using him for only color but one day asked him for a cut and have been thrilled ever since . He also has a great personality and always makes me feel special when I come . I do not like the fact that they moved and both places that they moved to have a great deal of steps to reach the location . Much better when they were on the ground floor and easily assessable . Would much prefer them than the cookie store . . read more

This is one of the best places I have EVER gotten my hair. I'm racially mixed and grew up in a primarily white area and suffered YEARS of bad haircuts. Naturally it's really hard for me to trust new salons. this salon was recommended by a friend and it. Is. AMAZING. I've gone three times and every time I walk out feeling like a million bucks. Because of terrible past haircuts, being pretty lazy and cheap when it comes to hair/makeup/anything, I have put off getting my curly hair cut for years. Prior to my visit to Dream Waves last weekend, I hadn't gotten a professional haircut in about five years and have instead been hacking at my split ends on my own. You can probably imagine how my hair looked as a result -- very frizzy, curls weren't defined, and my hair was falling out a bunch. If you're like me, then you've probably looked at the Devachan Salon website 500 times and almost booked an appointment but never followed through because of the price. Please learn from my years of negligence. Dream Waves is awesome, offers pricing that won't make you roll your eyes, and delivers an exceptional salon experience, not to mention the best and most flattering haircut that I've ever received in my thirty years of existence! It's also in a neighborhood that's easy to get to from anywhere in NYC. I called and got an appointment for Saturday morning. I was seen right away and offered coffee (definitely needed it). Rini was kind, funny, and explained everything that he was doing to my hair. He asked me about my hair habits (they're terrible) and offered suggestions to help me improve my routine. He uses Deva Curl products, gives a great scalp massage, and the whole thing took less than an hour. If you have curly hair, definitely give this place a chance. I'm personally so happy to finally have a go-to for my hair. It definitely won't be another five years until my next haircut. read more

I only hope Rini will be around forever. Ten years from now I'd love to be able to tell my friends, "Yeah, I've been going to the same hairdresser for about 15 years." It has such a nice ring to it. All my cuts with Rini have been absolutely wonderful and I always leave with the exact cut I've wanted. He is professional, but not uptight and snooty. I came in for a haircut, didn't actually got one but I feel I should leave a review anyway. He said I didn't need a haircut and the my hair shape was good. He could've just taken my money, cut here and there and say he did something. He chose to be honest instead and that says a lot about him as a professional. I had an amazing first experience at Dream Waves! I have frizzy, thick, wavy hair that I have never been able to manage. I went into my appointment a little clueless because I had never been to a stylist that specialized in curls/waves before, and I wasn't sure what to expect. However, Rini is fantastic! He was able to give me a perfect haircut and took the time to explain to me how to properly style my hair to better define the waves and curls. I am beyond happy with the way my hair turned out and I will definitely be returning when it is time for a trim! The price is very reasonable, and they were very flexible when it came to scheduling an appointment. I saw the several positive reviews for cutting waves/curls of different types. I have fine long hair w/ a lot of volume, (hair "looks" big/thick), with what I believe is a Type 2A-B wave. I've been told over the years that my hair takes & holds direction very well. I like to alternate between wearing my hair natural (with the different types of wave it has) and also smoother & put wave/body back into it. I never ever wear my hair pin-straight (it looks stupid to me that way). I'm not precious about my hair, particularly the last several months during the pandemic lockdown, but I like to have my hair look good (who doesn't?). My hair also grows quickly, about 3/4 inch per month, so I'm pretty forgiving about cuts. I found Rini to be very communicative via Yelp mail. Day of the appt, Rini reached out and asked to move the appt to a later time. I couldn't because I had an appointment to have new passport pics taken. I said I could come earlier in the day, & so we moved my appt up an hour. About 30 min before the appt, Rini texted and said his previous client was late and could I come later. I get this can happen and so agreed. I had washed my hair two nights before, and let it air dry with very minimal product I hadn't tried to twist my hair strands into any "real" style. So: my hair looked a bit nutty when I walked in, but I'm a believer that you don't have to go into a salon with your hair looking perfect because you trust the stylist will have expertise to see your hair & know what to do. The salon is small and cute. There was a colorist there who seemed nice, and a girl in his chair. It was a beautiful day and the door was open. The girl and I both wore masks in our chairs. Covid protocols seemed totally fine. Rini was friendly, introduced himself. I got in the chair and told him in brief what I hoped to achieve: that I wanted to trim the ends and fix the layers. I said that I wear my hair both natural/wavy and smoother. I also said I had hoped to have my hair "smoother" for my passport pics and Rini said "I don't blow out hair that way." Ok, fine, I can work with that. The only caveat I had was that I didn't want layers in the front to be so short they were "above" my eyes. I have to admit looking at my cut now I'm glad I made a point of that. So: Rini started snipping away. He explained that most stylists don't cut layers high enough up on the head. I don't really have a problem with layers, I get that certain hair really needs layers to shape the hair. There wasn't a pattern to the way he was cutting, which, again, I was like whatever, because I trusted Rini was doing what needed to be done for my hair. That said: I did feel it was a little weird he started cutting my hair in seemingly random fashion on my ends, and then chopping in various other places. I figured that perhaps after the initial dry cut he would wash and then look at my hair again to clean up the the cut. Early on in the cutting process I asked "so: will I be able to wear my hair smoother?" and he said yes, almost like I shouldn't ask. After about 15 minutes, he washed my hair and left it really wet & explained that he was putting in leave-in conditioner & then would twist the hair. He said it would have a really pretty, ordered wave to it with no frizz and would feel very soft and natural. He put me in a chair under the standing dryer, scrunched my hair a bit, and I was there for 15-20 minutes. Another client came in (I assume she was the reason we moved my appt earlier). She seemed to be a regular (& her hair was quite curly). The dryer finished & I got up & Rini said all the nice things, and that I would love it. I admit I wasn't super thrilled immediately, because my hair still felt a little damp around the scalp. I didn't get a chance to see the back of head; & Rini had really already moved on to his next client. The colorist and the girl in his chair said "oh your hair looks great, much better!" I said I'll live with it for a few days, see how I feel. I had to go to an ATM because they're accepting cash only during this time (Yelp reviews didn't mention having to pay in cash, only cash tips). I paid, said thanks, and went home. Once I got home, I looked at my hair in the mirror, sides, back, etc. First thing I noticed was that the left side of my hair was shorter than the right side of my hair by at least 3/4 inch! It was noticeable, even with the wave. When I pulled down the hair on either side of my head, it was even more noticeable. I tried to scrunch up the right side, but it was still visibly longer. Today was the first day I washed my hair. I blew it out, and it just doesn't look very good at all. I don't have a setter, so I can't really replicate what Rini did, & frankly, it's kind of a high-maintenance routine. I will need to find another stylist to fix the uneven ends in a few months. This is a place for curlier hair worn in one way & not for those who have less curly hair and looking for a versatile cut. read more

I have found my new hair salon! Rini was so warm and welcoming and James knocked it out of the park with my haircut. This being my first curly dry cut, I was nervous but my fears melted away the minute James got to work. He knew exactly how to cut my hair to achieve the look I wanted. He also took the time to show me how to best apply products to my hair. I plan on going back soon to let him color me up. If you are a curly-haired girl, you need to seek this place out! Dream Waves has been the most amazing spot (as a first timer) for a person like myself to learn more about my natural waves, texture style and treating my hair. Rini is hands down the most sweetest, patient and kind hearted person I've met and he worked step by step in maintaining my hair texture, demonstrating on how to improve my natural hair and learning on products to use. Recently moved to nyc and needed a new curly cut. I used to go to a devacurl salon in Boston that I loved (AnitaKurl). Dream waves is a tiny spot located in gramercy. I asked for a trim and highlights. I love the way my hair turned out. I had James do a partial highlight and Marinel cut my hair. Will come back when I get my haircut. Only cons were they only accept cash for a tip and it was hard to get ahold of them via the phone. I used the yelp messenger app which worked great. Love my haircut! read more

I have been going to James McNally for YEARS! When he told me that he was now working at Dream Waves, I couldn't wait to check the salon out. It is very cute with a friendly feel. James is a master when it comes to color and cut. Under his care, my hair has never been healthier or looked better. A year ago I decides to embrace my natural curls and stop straightening my hair. Fast forward to now, my hair is mid transition and unruly. After much soul searching I decided it was time to treat my curls right and find someone who really knows curls to cut and style my hair. After much time on Yelp I found this place and made an appointment. I am not exaggerating when I say this is one of the best decisions I have ever made!! They guys were the nicest and made me comfortable the moment I walked through the door. I was super nervous about getting my hair cut at a new salon but James and Rini made the process so easy! I used to go to devachan salon but I wanted to find a new place because I couldn't justify spending $175+ on a haircut. I'm so glad I found this gem!!! I had a much better experience here than I ever had at devachan. They took the time to teach me how to use the products and style my hair on my own. The prices are reasonable and the service is top quality. James gave me very natural pintura highlights. They are slowly lightening up and I'm loving them!!! While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Leaving the salon it looked good styled but when I went home to wash it and had more time to look without it curled I saw really choppy layers and the length is much shorter than i wanted. For a cut I paid $107-110 not including tips and expected a decent cut for that amount. Truly disappointing as holidays are coming up and I have been wearing a hat to cover up, cannot wait for this to grow out but will take months.
