Do not believe the enthusiastic reviews or be fooled by the location in Chelsea. This place is a chop-shop and an awful one at that. The "master stylist" butchered my hair. It will take months to grow out and it is -- unbelievably -- frizzier than before. This was my first time at Salon Jatel. Tyler was busy dying some man's hair when I arrived and sent me immediately to have my hair washed. I asked to speak with him before my wash so that he could consider the texture of my hair and I could show him the 3 pictures I brought to guide him about what I wanted. He barely looked at me or the images. I should have walked out then, but I thought I had done my research and there were so very many positive reviews. The receptionist washed my hair. I then sat for 10 minutes waiting for him to talk with me. Instead, he walked up and just started CHOPPING away at an incredible speed. No questions about what I did or did not want; no answer when I asked what he was planning. 5 minutes later, his next appointment arrived. The receptionist washed her immediately and she sat waiting for Tyler. She did not have to wait long, since he finished my hair moments later. To repeat: new client, challenging hair texture, and from start to finish Edward Scissorhands took less than 20 minutes! Ironically, the website specifies that women's haircuts will be 45 minutes, but it was not even 30 minutes and could not have been longer, since they schedule overlapping appointments. I now have all sorts of short bits and pieces, and random long strings of hair. A local barbershop would have cut with more precision and skill, and it would have costs less than a 1/3 of what I paid (including 20% tip). And, of course, I now will have to pay for a truly skilled hairstylist to attempt to fix this frizzy, awful mess. If you want to overpay for a record-speed, horrible chop, Salon Jatel is for you. I cannot rave about Tyler enough. I went in with medium long hair and was dead set on a pixie. He spent time with me to chat about what I was envisioning, explained what about my reference pictures would need to be different in order for the cut to look good on me, and double checked that I didn't want to gradually take off the length (kind of a drastic change when you don't know the stylist). For the cut itself, Tyler dry cut it, after taking off the length. He was thorough and precise, making adjustments, and ensuring that the end result was balanced and flattering. And what I ended up with is absolute perfection! It's both exactly what I wanted and different in ways that balance and complement my facial features. The cut looks youthful and cool (I was a little worried about ending up with mom hair when I decided to go short). Tyler is incredibly skilled! I'll be going back in 6 weeks for a trim. read more

I wrote a review in 2018 after my first visit. I felt the need to update my review as it is 2021, and I can officially still say that this is hands down, my favorite salon. The staff is authentic, kind, and most importantly, does an excellent job. I have received so many compliments on my hair. I will never forget about the day I went to The Metropolitan Museum of Art and received 3 compliments by 3 different people throughout my visit. I used to go to the gym, and people would ask who cuts my hair (sweaty gross hair and all). I have realized that it really does not matter what you wear, if you have a great haircut, you shine (remember inner beauty and being a great person helps too). You will receive high-class quality service here. If I could afford it, I probably would be here more often. Needless to say, this is one of the more affordable high-end salons in New York City. I have had my hair done since the pandemic and I have felt very safe here. The PPE and protocol for the salon has been very important to me. The first time, I was very reluctant as I did not want to risk anything and I thought, where am I going? It is SO important to take care of yourself and keep up with self-care. It is so important. The standards here are very high and I would like to be sure to add this because I can fairly vouch. Should you feel uncomfortable in any way, voice it to your stylist and they will make the appropriate accommodations. As soon as you arrive, they provide a newly cleaned robe for you to wear. These have been washed and disinfected. The bathrooms have always been sparkling clean. Ana has a lot of professional hair experience. I wish I could stay selfish because I want to keep her all to myself. The truth is, she is a real gem in NYC. She's honest, and knows exactly what she's doing with both cut AND color. She makes the color look very natural and has a gift. Should you need assistance with cutting your fringe/bangs or need assistance growing them out and not sure what to do, she will cut your hair in a way that will make the grow-out process easier and provide the right amount of dimension. While I am here, the salon is very relaxing, and the air quality is just right. I have never felt as if I am breathing in too many chemicals (sometimes hair salons could have such poor quality ventilation due to the hairdryers etc). The entire staff was courteous, professional, and welcoming (unlike a lot of salons in NYC). I am sure we have all had that experience when the receptionist is so snooty and rude. This will NOT happen here. Janie helped me with my shampoo, toner, and conditioning mask. She is so sweet, genuine, intelligent and has wonderful energy. She has always assisted Ana when I would get my hair done here. I would not want it any other way. ATTENTION MEN: I actually see more men walk-in for haircuts than I do women when I visit. I got bored and dyed my hair with strawberry blonde box dye. BIG MISTAKE. I found this spot online and they had awesome reviews (specializing in short hair) I scheduled a cut and single process color (a little nervous if they could fix what mess I made of my hair) Everyone inside was very friendly and welcoming. They didn't make me feel like I screwed up my hair. They were super happy to help me without making me feel uncomfortable or ashamed of what I did. My stylist was Shuheī. He was wonderful, he was able to trouble shoot and explain to me what he was going to do to correct and how the process worked. I really enjoyed his energy and expertise. We did color first and then cut. I wanted a shaggy, layered mullet with bangs. And I'm super impressed at how the cut came out. I feel so beautiful after this! I left the salon almost skipping for joy. And the cost was reasonable as well! O M G!!! Tyler did an amazing job!! This is the first time a hair stylist actually , I mean actually carries out how I imagined my hair would turn out to be. He super professional and do things I never seen any other hair stylist do (maybe it's bc I usually go to $25 hair cuts). Guys, he is worth my money ( $85 (hair cut) + $30 (tips)) and I ask gave $5 to the sweet girl who washed my hair. My hair is an angled bob. I never cut my hair this short before because I never thought I could look nice with short hairs but COVID Really got to me. YOU knowwwwww your haircut is on point when you catch people staring at you after you got your hair cut ;) Their salon is very cautious with COVID PPE and the outline of their salon is very similar to a ER setting ... hahaha. I've gotten my hair cut by Tyler a few times, and he is a 'wizard' with the scissors. He has a great 'chill' personality...very easy to talk to. I have to say however that...their pricing list (as shown on their website) is a bit in the 'dark ages'. Let's face it...there are many men out there nowadays, both straight and gay, who want a stylish haircut. They don't want a simple cut from 'their dad's barber up the block'. Sometimes men's haircuts can involve just as much technique, work, and styling as a woman's haircut (and in some instances, possibly more work). So it's stupefying that 'men's cuts' are listed on their site as being between $55-60, while even the most inexpensive 'women's cut' starts at $85? That means there's at least a $25 price differential (if not more), just for being female, and regardless of the style or length of hair you may have or want? read more

The salon itself is very conveniently located, the staff are friendly and welcoming, and I never have to wait. I cannot speak more highly about Salon Jatel and am so happy I made the 2.5 hour trek into NYC and took a chance on them. I was specifically searching for a Japanese salon to take care of my and my mother's sometimes fickle Japanese hair and saw Salon Jatel's excellent online reviews. So, I called the day before and made an appointment for myself and then called back again to book my mother at the same time. Our appointments were on a Sunday, and we had an easy ride into the city and were able to park right in front of the salon (Pro Tip: There's free on-street parking on Sunday). We truly hit the jackpot. Upon walking in, we were happy to see the salon was following Covid protocols with temperatures being checked and each station sectioned off. Everyone, both staff and clients, were wearing masks and we felt very safe. We were taken on time (actually, early!) and warmly greeted by the stylists. Everyone at Salon Jatel is/was so pleasant, accommodating and nice. Even more important, all of the stylists at Salon Jatel are extremely skilled in their craft. In just speaking and listening to all of them, you can tell they are highly trained and genuinely care about making their clients look their best. I was lucky enough to witness fantastic haircut after haircut while I received my own fabulous haircut and color from Kumi and my mother received hers from Harumi. I went from a "just okay" just beyond shoulder-length hairstyle I had maintained from a local salon in my state to a perfectly coiffed inverse bob that I can't get enough of! I have received so many compliments since my visit. Harumi also transformed my mom's hairstyle from "Covid hair" to a short, precision hairstyle and highlights that she would be able to easily maintain. We really appreciated Kumi and Harumi taking the time at the beginning of our appointments to understand exactly what our hair goals were and not only executing on them, but far exceeding our expectations. Their skills are incredible and it shows. Both Kumi and Harumi also made sure to show each of us exactly how to wssh and dry, style and maintain our new hairstyles so we would be able to keep them looking just as awesome as they did when we left the salon (and we have been able to thanks to our perfect haircuts, which makes it that much easier). I found this salon online based on what the salon wrote up as well as others. Their claim to fame was specializing in short haircuts. Made my appointment with Tyler and couldn't be happier! He came up with a new style that fits me like a T! The entire staff was super kind and the woman who is in charge of washing hair went above and beyond with a scalp massage and neck rub. My friend suggested I try Harumi at Jatel, who said she was referred by her friend. Jatel is a cute little salon, conveniently placed in the usq area. All of the positives from the reviews here are true, but boy is this place bad at scheduling. My appointments here usually start about 5 minutes late, and the last time I was here, my appointment started 26 minutes late (scheduled at 3:45, started at 4:11)! And then because my appointment started so late, the haircut was rushed and I got a haircut that I could've gotten at one of the places that puts out a sign advertising $10 hair cuts. Considering the prices this place charges, I'd expect something I couldn't do myself or that I couldn't get for $10 elsewhere. I get that Manhattan rents are expensive and businesses don't want to build slack into the schedule because it costs them money, so I expect places like this to run late, but 26 minutes late is a bit much. To be fair, I usually get a decent cut from this place, but for what they charge, occasionally starting almost half an hour late and delivering a crappy hair cut isn't really worth it. read more
