This is 99% of plumbing jobs in Somerville. If it's that much of a problem, don't bother coming in the first place to charge me $77. Second, the estimate price: astronomical. Twice as much as the most expensive quotes I have gotten for this job. Five figures. If you are a very rich owner of a single-family home, Vaughan might be an option - the ratings here say they are talented plumbers. Otherwise, save yourself the money, hassle, and headache.

The pump with an issue is a small unit that is located on the side of the furnace. To my knowledge, all that is needed is to unplug the old and plug in the new one. A new pump retails for about $45. If I were at the apartment at this time, I would certainly do it myself. Anyway, I am totally willing to pay for someone to change the unit and have my furnace checked. I thought this was a pretty easy request, but I was wrong. I & C responded that they would charge $245 for the first hour of the installation of the pump plus the parts. This seemed like a lot to pay for someone to plug something into a wall but I figured that I would at least get someone to check my furnace within that hour - nope they won't do that. To check the furnace they would charge an additional $245 for the first hour. So what could literally be a 25-minute job, plug in the pump, and check my one-bedroom furnace would cost $490 in labor + plus the parts. Their pricing is ridiculous and they couldn't clearly explain how it made any sense. Buyer beware, do a little research before you hire someone, and be careful that they don't charge you $245 per "task".

We recently had an issue and had someone come for a repair. The tech quoted a number, to which I agreed, although it seemed high at the time. I expected to be able to review the bill for cost of labor and parts, but it came as one line item. When I called and asked for a breakdown, they said they couldn't provide it for me and they did lump sum billing now based on putting a job into their system. Now I feel like I am getting ripped off (the $1,600 discount to sign up for their membership reinforced this, what must the markup be?). Sadly it is impossible to prove otherwise since they won't provide any additional information on parts and labor rates. I will be going elsewhere from now on.

I called Boston Drain Co asking them to unclog my shower drain as well as inspect my sewer line, which I had been advised to look at in my initial home inspection. The person who came was very nice but definitely took advantage of my lack of understanding of plumbing. He could not fix my shower drain due to it having an older drum trap that needed to be replaced, which this company does not do, and I completely understood that. When I asked him to look at the sewer line he explained that the video camera only works if there is no sewer trap present. I, knowing nothing about plumbing as a new home owner, asked if there's any way to check for a trap before doing the video. He said no there is not and he implored me that this test was extremely important and it's worth the risk to have the information about if my sewer line has any issues. So I agreed. When the camera was about 3 feet into my sewer line, what do you know, there's a trap. He stands up and says "look in your sump pump hole, you can see the trap coming up out of the ground right there." And that was the extent of what I learned from the sewer line inspection. So he saw the trap poking up out of the ground but since of course I didn't know what it was he still performed a pointless sewer drain scope and charged me $475. When I called the company to request a refund they just said when the camera comes out you pay $475, end of story. So at the end of the day, my shower is still clogged and I have no idea if my sewer line is damaged. But they got their $475! I hope they enjoyed my money because it's the last penny they will see from my household.

He was able to coordinate everything that needed to be done, including contacting the township to turn off the water, so he could fix the problem. The whole process was about two hours and we were rocking and rolling with water again. They also use booties coming in and out of your home/apartment. Along with the service contract, they come in to do a yearly inspection and with a multi-family home it saves us a lot of money. Today, technician Chris Tighe checked everything in all the units - sinks, tubs, shower heads, toilets, disposal, the basement water heaters, pipes etc... and even the faucet outside! There were a couple of minor issues and he took care of them - a dripping faucet in the shower, a shower head drip and then a toilet was running, so he replaced a part and it wasn't crazy money. It's just such a relief to know that Chris (a super friendly, knowledgeable guy) was a person I could trust and know that all is operating well in the house.
