I live in and own a few rentals in JP. The houses are all over 100 years old, and one of them had a particularly difficult to resolve bathtub drain problem. I found Doug on Craigslist and set up a time for him to check it out. I'm always a little nervous using Craigslist, but Doug was right on time (I was actually a few minutes late), he listened carefully to my description of the problem and worked for over an hour to try to clear the drain using several different approaches. As it turned out, given the nature of the problem, it could not be solved by snaking. But using a clever approach with his smart phone camera, he was able to non-intrusively take a picture of the section of pipe that he deduced must have the clog. Since next steps to resolve it meant cutting open a small access in a ceiling, I decided to think about it before proceding with Doug's recommended steps. I was very pleased, though to have a much better understanding of the problem. So I tried to pay him, since he had come out, narrowed down the problem, and helped me figure out what the next logical steps were, including advice on what to do if I had another plumber do the work. When he refused to accept payment I became more insistant. No matter how much I tried, he would not accept payment, since he insisted that the problem was not resolved. So, after taking some time that night to think about it, I decided to procede with Doug's recommendation and cut open the two foot section of ceiling needed to fix the section of pipe with the problem. I called up Doug and he fit me into his busy schedule the next day. He and his son came on time, sectioned out the clogged pipe (the original 100-year-old galvanized pipe had a rusty section where a large plastic "Duplo" block had become completely imbeded in it, from when a tenant's kid was playing in the bath!), and re-piped the drain correctly so that it would not clog again. He also saved me additional money by fixing a problem with the existing drain fixture that allowed the lego to go down the drain in the first place. I am a fairly savy homeowner/fix-it guy myself, so I was hoping to save some money by doing the cutting and patching of the ceiling myself. Doug was happy to accomodate, and was easy to work with on this (though he also had someone who could do that work if I needed) He was highly professional and gave me a great price. He and his son did just the work that needed to be done, without going overboard to charge me for work that was not needed. The drain was completely fixed within 24 hours of first calling him. I am completely satisfied and will not hesitate to call him again for my plumbing needs. I highly recommend him! read more
