Soon to be called Odin's Lair??? They're splitting off of Dragon's Lair, so I've heard. Plenty of parking in the strip mall. We came in around 7PM on a weekday evening and it was still quite packed. Barely got a table for our group of 5, and we didn't start playing til around 7:45PM. Their board game library is fantastic. We played Kinfire Council, a bit of a rarer game, and it was a great vibe. Drinks can be purchased from the Tabletop Tavern connected and they'll bring it right to your table (except for the Pokemon tables which are designated for family friendliness). Fantastic shop. Went here with my husband. Just left and will never return. Why? We wanted a box of Pokémon cards and we told the guy working that we just want to collect it and keep it for several years. His attitude immediately changed and he said "I don't like selling to people like you." He said it to my husband. I was shocked. How can you speak to someone like that unprovoked? My husband loves Pokémon and had a collection as a kid and it was thrown out. He was excited. My husband said he didn't like his attitude but would still give the store money anyways. He then asked for a $50 box of Pokémon cards and the same guy said he was going to punch a hole into the box with a hole puncher. My husband said he didn't want that because he wants it sealed and untouched. The guy proceeds to give him an attitude and tells my husband he can have the Pokémon box for double the price or else he will hole punch it. Honestly, this isn't the first time this place has been a disappointment. I promise you, you will meet the rudest and most pompous Reddit mod toxic a** people in places like this. The environment is unwelcoming. You can tell these people hate you. If you don't look like a liberal, have the purple hair and piercings-- these people treat you different. It's obvious and gross. If they keep this behavior up, they'll go out of business one day. Also, the owner seems to post very ugly and offensive responses to any reviews he doesn't like. That should tell you something. This place is going to shrivel up and dry out of business. So many complaints about the attitude of the employees yet the owner behaves like this. read more

The staff had me a number wait around for 5 hours our number wasn't called . Also had to get there earlier to just wait around 5 hours and didn't get to meet the blue ranger . Also the staff was crap the place is small . And there collectibles selection wasn't worth it . Also the prices were too cheap for the value of the collectibles . I wanted to give this place a better review but again it's just the waste my time factor. Place was far AF from me but told me they could make an offer on my bill comic book collection. The offer was zero dollars... which is insane for what was like I dunno 500 or more comics. I needed to get rid of for space. But again I was moving and needed to get rid of them so I drove like forever to this shop cause they said they would look them over and buy bulk.. The staff was super nice they did say they were looking over all my stuff I don't not maybe they just have too much already. Anyway they didn't long story short they were only interested in the rarest stuff I had that I didn't want to sell... again just wasted my time. Dragons Lair is a great place for games! They have regular events and tournaments for a range of games, and they are super responsive to customer interests. My husband and I enjoy regular trips to browse the stock and grab a bite to eat in the tavern while playing Vampire the Masquerade or switching it up with something new that we just bought. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about their products, and Matt in particular saved my bacon when he special ordered a VtM expansion pack that was a short-notice Christmas gift for my husband last year. Was on this side of town and looking for something to do, found this business on yelp and checked them out. Walked in to find a packed house. Also found employee, Rebecca (who was amazing). She asked if I had ever been in before, I hadn't, so she pointed out the different sections of the store and explained the type of game play that was being played tournament style, in the store. Also let me know if I spotted either shop cat, I should pet them. She truly had excellent customer service skills. I looked around at the different collectibles that were available. Actually found something I didn't know existed and happily made a purchase. They have, what looked like an excellent selection of comic books and graphic novels, board games, dice, and a ton a miniature accressories to play the live gaming that was going on in the store. There was even a kids section. I left with an event calendar and it looks like they have something different going on almost every day. This was a really cool store. read more

I stopped by Dragon's Lair to pick up Moniker. The second I walked in I was greeted by a very friendly and nerdy employee who made me immediately feel welcomed. He was super helpful and found the game for me within in minutes. Location is warm, well designed, comfy...way different from the other game shops I've been to in Houston. They also collaborate with other local businesses to host game nights, which I love. I will be back! Also note, one of the other reviews mentioned a smell? I was there a week ago and didn't smell anything weird. I'm pretty sensitive to these things. If I had smelled it, I would say something so I guess disclaimer. read more

I have passed by and seen this business many times since moving nearby but never had a reason to visit. My son wanted JJK books so we went to see what they had and found two. There were plenty of staff walking around asking customers if they needed any help and lots of people in the back room playing games together. My boyfriend literally got scammed from this place and the staff and owner continuously gaslight us into thinking we're crazy. Basically my boyfriend brought in a bunch of pokémon cards to sell. The staff tries making the claim that my boyfriend never went into the store and never received his cards. I can say for certain that he did go into the store considering I was on the phone with him when he went. My boyfriend also went in and asked to see the camera footage but they claimed that it had randomly been deleted. Now regarding the cards, the staff had literally admitted to them being lost. The worst part is they didn't even bother to get back in contact with my boyfriend after this. They said that they would call him back many times but never did. read more

I filled out their form for a particular comic book subscription. I came back the day after they received their shipment to pick up my books. Well, they ignored my subscription request and sold out all of the issues I had requested. When I complained, the guy said Oh, I think we have one issue left back on the shelf. He went and got it so I thought he was trying to make up for the oversight. The comic was already bagged and boarded which I thought was a bit odd. Today I took the comic out of the bag to look at it. The back cover was creased! What a sleazy tactic and I know now why it was the last one they had on the shelf. They think I'm stupid! They have moved into their new space in the same strip mall where they had been before. They have increased their retail area greatly, added many more minis, paints and games. The layout of the retail area is a bit odd, most stores would not be laid out this way, but to each their own. The new gaming area is huge, with private gaming rooms. The only issue is when the room is full, it is loud- hard to play DnD there or anything else and more so if you cant hear as good as you once did. The private rooms are a bit expensive- had they put a ceiling with sound treatment, then that would be worth the extra cost. read more

The store boasts two 4'x6' wargaming tables, multiple fold up tables that can be rearranged for Board games, Tabletop RPG's, X-Wing Miniatures, Heroclix, Poke'mon, and the always popular Magic the Gathering. I've seen the stock of board games and comic books flying off the shelves and have stopped by for both Free Comic Book Day and Free RPG day. The store is nice has a lot of good games, dice and extra. The people on the floor are amazing! The tavern is a different story tho, I got a coffee with almond milk from there on Monday. The coffee taste weird and the almond milk was chunky and tasted as if it was expired. Honestly, when I first walked into this shop I fell in love. Unfortunately I am now never going to step foot in it again. Not only is the staff rude and distracted, but they are also very similar to high school cliques. Over the time I've spent there I've seen an abundant amount of unprofessional behavior. The owner and his manager seem to want to do everything themselves. There used to be different staff members doing the what are we reading Wednesday and now it's just the owner. I haven't been in recently but I doubt it's changed., I was going for a little over a year and it never changed. I wouldn't recommend working here either, the staff seem to single people out and it seems like an unbalanced and unhappy work environment. read more

Nice, large space, but pretty sparse with stock. It was grand opening day though, so I'm sure it will fill out. Employees were very nice and I was asked by multiple people if I needed any help. If you are into tabletop gaming, this is a great place for you. They had multiple games running at various tables, and a good variety of games and gaming supplies. Here's the part of the review I hate to have to write though, and the reason I'm not giving this store 4 or 5 stars. If you are a comic book fan (like myself), this is NOT the store for you. There are NO back issues whatsoever, NO wall books at all, and the new release wall is very empty and not well organized. Basically, if you're looking for comics, this is the last store in the city you should go to, as there were maybe 150-200 to choose from, total. tl;dr - Good for gaming, horrible for comics. Clean, large and helpful staff. UPDATE: I have added a star because of the owner's reply. It's a great sign when the business takes time to address concerns and explain the reasons for any perceived short comings. I recognize that things change over time, and hopefully this shop will add more for comic readers. I was a victim of credit card fraud from this establishment. The night manager asked me to join the mailing list and I gave him my zip along with the purchase. He then used my info to buy online from Upper Deck and other stores. Through conversation he found out I was from out of town. Sleazy stuff. It was the only place I used my own credit card on a business trip. All this does is make me want to stop shopping at small businesses. Small thought on their part. As a brand new LGS/Comic store on 249, it allows me to get my monthly fix of comics without heading into Houston proper. It is rapidly gaining popularity, as each time I walk in there's more people than last time. They take special orders for trades and the staff is knowledgeable about the products they sell, especially RD who I talked to about comics for a while. They even have some niche products like the LoZ Figma of Link and SHFiguarts of Sailor Moon (although behind glass for good reason) and other vinyl and traditional action figures. The manga ranges from popular to series I never heard of. They even have Jojo's Bizarre Adventure which I thought I would never see. The wide variety of board games is inspiring. You can even try certain games before you buy them, making it perfect to just invite some friends and try a new game. Wargaming tables and regular tables allow you to play any game you can think of, from Warhammer to Mtg. I've only seen it busy one day where there were no tables available, so reserving a table might be in your best interests if you plan on playing on a popular day. Bathrooms are gender-neutral which is appreciated. Beware there is a cat that roams around at times, so if your allergic you should take the usual precautions. read more

I'm writing this after dealing with this store for nearly a year. Let me say as far as what they have to sell it's a good store. The owner that I talked to was a very nice gentleman. what has killed it for me was how I have been treated multiple times as I have come into the store. Let me say this upfront I do understand that as a business it is their right to have their own "mask mandate" but what have driven me from taking my business elsewhere is the fact it's selectively enforced. Nearly every time I have come in since the beginning of the covid bs the employees have treated me more like a pariah rather than a customer. One visit I actually had an employee stare at me as I came in. I said hello and went to the malifaux section to which the employee continued to stare at me then came up to scrutinize my mask like a police officer. Asking me questions about my mask etc, all the while folks at a gaming table don't have masks on but aren't being hounded to put on their masks. Another incident where I was barked at "Where is your mask? Put your mask on! Etc" as soon as I walk into the building as I am grabbing my mask from my pocket to put it on. Needless to say it doesn't make on feel welcome. The straw that broke the camels back was a few weeks ago. My wife and I were on a date and decided to stop by and shop for some warhammer. As we walked up we spotted a hispanic gentleman walking around near the front. Watching a few moments my wife and I decided to walk on in without masks (mine was around my neck, this was after our Governor take away the mask mandate for all of Texas). It felt great! Some folks had masks on, and I figured well if they want to great. So as I am shopping with my wife two employees see us (one was black another female) I said hello to them and they said hi back. my wife and I had been in the store now for 20 mins shopping And also having the same black employee come within two feet of me to find a specific box of warhammer. (my beef isn't that he came toward me or got close but it'll make sense as to why I am referencing it) he couldn't see it so I helped him find it and handed it to him to which he thanks me explaining it was for a customer on the phone. Again my wife and I have no mask on and nothing was sad the conversation and interaction with that employee was great. Having found what we wanted as we headed back toward the registers. As we walked toward the registers I pointed out another hispanic lady walking around without a mask. All of the sudden a male employee with glasses and ginger hair rolls up to me saying "sir where is your mask you need to put it on." Mind you, I have now been in the store for nearly half an hour. There were two other customers without masks on before I got in. I interacted with two other employees who treated me like a customer and not some fugitive leper. I dared ask why he asked me to put my mask on (yeah I'm white but my wife is Hispanic) but didn't ask the other two folks to put their masks on? He then states well you need to put your mask on first then I will go talk to them (which he never did). At that point I just bought my stuff to get the hell out. the lady at the counter was nice and helpful. As we left and got into my car my wife pointed out that from an optics standpoint that was a publicity disaster. I said how so? (Again I'm focusing on mask stuff) she said that guy with the glasses targeted you the white guy. He left alone the two Hispanics and he never even told me to put on my mask and I standing right next to you. I said yeah I guess no mask and white means that one employee felt as though he could single me out. Btw this is the same gentlemen who barked at me before I could put my ask on before the date incident. I feel bad for the other employees and the owner. You want masks? Cool. No worries but be consistent. Everyone should be made to wear them including the people at the table (don't tell me they were vaccinated because this was before the vaccine) or the non white folks walking around the store shopping without being harassed. by being not consistent especially after our governor says no more mask mandate it tends to confuse your customer base. Sign on the door says masks but people walking around shopping don't have them. Or is it as long as you're not white it's okay? Again I am deeply surprised at the sheer bigotry from that employee. I hate making race a thing at all. My family will no longer come here. For those doing the finances you have lost an annual 1.5k dollars in sales as that is what I have clocked in the last two years I have shopped with you. Doesn't seem like much but ask me what business says oh well it's only 1.5k. Especially in today's market. It's sad because this is a local business I wanted to support but I won't be treated like that. I have found another store further away that has or can order what I need and will gladly spend the extra gas money to make purchases there. read more

We had an all around amazing experience at Dragon's Lair Houston North. The staff were very friendly, and made us feel very welcome as soon as we arrived. The selection of board games surpassed my expectations; the staff seemed to be very aware of which games were in demand, and the selection reflected this with a wide variety of popular as well as lesser-known games. The prices were extraordinarily reasonable, and in many cases we were able to find games that were priced as low as you could find anywhere online, and in some cases even cheaper than anywhere you could find online (which, for a brick-and-mortar store, is very impressive!). Finally, the demo wall allowing customers to try out games before purchasing them was a unique and welcome experience! As any board-gamer can tell you after experiencing buyer's remorse about a game which sounded great on paper but didn't quite pan out that well during actual game-play, this demo wall was a fantastic way to get a feel for a game before investing money into it. Overall, I will most definitely be returning to Dragon's Lair in the future, and would absolutely recommend it to friends and family. read more
