First, it's hard to beleive that there would be any rating below 5 stars for Dr. Poelman. We started seeing Dr. Poleman when he first took over the office in Poway many years ago. Everyone in his office was great. His first hygengist, Jill was so special and then Kelly was our star hygengist, she's also equally as great. I'm writting this because when we retired we lost some of our insurance and knowing we would need a lot of dental work as seniors we had to change to someone else. Since then, after seeing several other dentists I can attest to feeling that Dr. Poleman was the best and I really miss their office and Dr. Poleman. This office seems very hyper-focused on money that it became a personal turnoff for me as a customer. I began visiting the office in 2013 and didn't have insurance at the time. The staff suggested I take advantage of their office insurance plan, which required I pay $500 for the first patient and $300 for subsequent patients. The fees would cover two cleanings for free and give 50% off other services such as fillings. I paid $500 and only took advantage of one cleaning and some x-rays, which was my problem, however, it would have been nice for the office to contact me when scheduling cleanings to say "you have this much time left to take advantage of the cleanings you paid for with our insurance plan." In the end, they had $500 (plus more for my kids) and I received one cleaning and some x-rays. Again, my problem, but a customer-service-focused office in my opinion would help inform the customer better. When I received Delta Dental insurance through my employer, I contacted the office to let them know I now had insurance and made cleaning appointments for my husband and two girls. Although cleanings were supposed to be free with the plan, I was charged $130. It wasn't clear why and no one on staff had an understandable explanation. I then had two fillings (again supposed to be covered 80% on my plan), and received a bill for $230. When I again inquired, there was staff confusion as to why I was charged that amount. Upon more research, I discovered this office was a Delta Premier provider and not a Delta PPO provider, which meant I paid higher percentages for services. The office didn't inform me of the difference between these two designations - which again they don't necessarily need to - but in the interest of educating the consumer would have been nice. I was also charged an additional $50 per filling because I was given white fillings. I'm sure I would have chosen white when asked, but I wasn't asked or informed that white fillings would be assessed at an out-of-pocket cost. I called Delta Dental for this information, because the staff just explained the $50 per extra filling costs as "your insurance didn't pay our contracted amount, so you have to pay the difference." If you visit the office, they will ask you for your credit card info up front so they can charge your card if you haven't paid your bill in the time frame they request. I had experienced identity theft with a recent card (not through this office), so I didn't provide my credit card info, but be prepared for them to call you and ask you to pay over the phone if they've sent a bill and you haven't paid within their time frame. Perhaps a personal pet peeve, but offices that are so focused on "pay us, pay us, pay us" with little no other customer interaction, gives me reason enough to switch offices, which is what I did. I was insured, and still paid this office nearly $400 in less than a year - for things I might not have had I been better informed. The dental services provided here were perfectly adequate as an FYI - but the vibe of the office and staff become a reason for me to go. read more

I may be biased because I work for Dr. Poelman, but that also means I see behind the scenes and understand what he is really like. I can honestly say that Dr. Poelman is as genuine as he seems. He truely cares about doing what is best for his patients. He wants his patients for feel like friends and family when they are treated in our office. I wrote this review because when I was searching for a dentist myself, I read what other people wrote. I wanted to share my experience to anyone who is looking for a dentist. I have visited and consulted many dentists in my lifetime here in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Poelman is by far the best dentist I have ever gone to & his assistant, Deborah, is very helpful, resourceful, and professional. Dr. Poelman has a reassuring presence and is caring and professional as well. He is meticulous in his work and very skilled. My family have all been going to see Dr. Poelman for several years since being recommended by a colleague. He is very knowledgable and empathetic, especially since I'm terrified of needles from a previous dentist's treatment. He has done extensive work on my husband's teeth, and although I'd normally choose a pediatric specialist for my child, I felt comfortable enough with his demeanor that she has her dental check ups and (thankfully minimal) work done there also. In my daughter's case, he'd let her sit on my lap while I was having a cleaning etc, and it was never a problem that she was there with me. It also helped her have a positive view of going to the dentist. The rest of the staff are also so nice and helpful...we really do feel valued as patients, and they all know us by name. I had my first visit with Dr Poelman yesterday. I broke a tooth over the weekend and I was very fortunate that he was able to fit me in immediately (especially with this being Christmas week). My entire family and most of their friends are HAPPY patients of the office..... & now I know why. The office is beautiful, the staff is very friendly and Dr Poelman is a complete professional. He and his staff put me at ease and didn't 'shame me' for avoiding the dentist for so long. I would highly recommend them to anyone! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Poelman's for many years and have been VERY happy with all of the work that he has done for me. My last major issue was my upper teeth, needed to deal with a few implants and a new bridge because one of the other teeth that held it together had gone bad. It took some time and a lot of planning, but as of right now I am feeling GREAT and very pleased with my new bridge. So, he is very good at working with complicated issues. Dr Poelman is a good dentist and his hygenists are very good. I do not like being stalked by his office staff. Their nagging emails and phone calls to make an appointment are a nuisance. I retired from the Navy in 2005 and since then have been very disappointed with my experiences with civilian dentists. Until a friend recommended Dr. Poelman. I never knew how good a dentist could be until now! The entire team is friendly, professional and very skilled. Each time I've had work done, it has been quick and pain free. Having a flat screen TV on the ceiling is a nice touch too. My teeth and gums are in the best shape they've been in years. I live 30 minutes from this office but this team would be my choice even if they were an hour away!!!!! read more

Dr. Poelman is a good dentist but he pushes cosmetic dentistry more than he should, I believe. I still had roughness behind teeth that he filled. When asked if he could smooth the rough spots out, I was told that he couldn't do anything more for me (on those teeth) unless I got crowns. (Another dentist just smoothed out the rough spots.) I felt pressure from Dr Poelman to get crowns for cosmetic reasons, although he knew I had health problems that make my cosmetic issues pale. One time I had an appt for a checkup and, after getting a great cleaning from hygenist Jennifer, I learned Dr Poelman had left the office to meet with his tax accountant (!) so I would have to come back another day for my exam. I finally switched to a very highly recommended dentist and he is great; I wish I had left sooner. read more
