First time visit/cleaning. Dr Patel made me feel at ease even though I was very nervous (I HATE the dentist). Throughout the cleaning he checked multiple times that I was alright to give me the chance to pause if needed. The whole visit took 30 minutes total including x rays and cleaning. No waiting around for the dentist after the x rays or sitting in the waiting room past my appointment time which I really appreciated. They also did not try to upsell me on any braces/teeth whitening/fake issues to fix which I appreciate as I have had that happen at most dentists and it feels very invasive. Overall as great an experience as the dentist can be! I will be back! read more

For me I have good teeth and making sure a dentist knows how to take care of it is important. Dr. Patel was patient, thorough, efficient, friendly, and reached all the problem areas I was having with tartar buildup. Not many dentists were accepting my insurance and the previously one did not work out for me. I recommend him for a visit and hope people get the same care I did. read more

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. They are out to get your money! For starters, I waited 45 minutes before I was seen. I was in there because a tooth was bothering me, I suspected a cavity. They took x-rays and the dentist came in. He tells me that the tooth that's bothering me was completely fine, but I had "many" other cavities that would need fillings. Mind you, I have never had a cavity in my life. He didn't even show me the teeth that had cavities on my x-rays, or tell me which ones they were. He also says that my gums were heavily receded and inflamed, and I would need a full deep clean and need to see a gum specialist. Then he says that I need a nightguard because I grind my teeth. Then he says that if I come back and my tooth is still bothering me, I will have to see a root canal specialist and potentially get a root canal--on a tooth that he just said appeared completely fine! Finally they did the "cleaning". By cleaning, I mean they sprayed some water in my mouth and poked around. No fluoride, no toothpaste, not even any flossing! The dentist himself did my cleaning, which was a first for me, and the entire thing took MAYBE 10 minutes. And then he reiterates that I need three fillings (still have no idea which teeth I supposedly have cavities in), and repeats the other bogus things that I will need. I go to check out, and I had to wait 15 more minutes for the receptionist to draft up my quote/treatment plan. In the end, they were going to charge me THOUSANDS of dollars for this treatment plan that would span over four more appointments (not even including the two specialists). I told her no thanks, and walked out. In total, I did not get any treatment or advice on the tooth that was actually causing me problems (aka the only reason I was there), I was diagnosed with numerous oral issues that have never once been brought up by prior dentists, and I was set up with a treatment plan that would've bankrupt me. And I waited over an hour for this "service"...for a cleaning that took less than 10 minutes. If you value your time, money, and oral health, stay a loooong ways away from this office. read more

I had an appointment last week. They cancelled the day of because there wasn't a dentist, but didn't tell me why. I thought that was a red flag and unprofessional. I had an appointment this morning. They called and left a voicemail for me yesterday to get a "verbal confirmation." Since I was busy, I called them back after 5 minutes. No response. "We cannot transfer you at this time." That also seems a bit odd considering they had called me 5 minutes beforehand. I tried calling back 15 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour, two hours later; and I got the same response. It wasn't until they were nearly closed yesterday that I finally got a call back that I confirmed the appointment "verbally." I went to the scheduled appointment this morning. When I arrived, the male admin had an unsavory attitude with me. "Did you get a chance to fill out the forms we texted you?" "No, I didn't get a text message." "Well, we sent it to you... I don't think we can send it again for you to be able to see the dentist. Is your number: xxx-xxx-xxxx?" His tone was just deplorable for 8:30am in my most humble opinion. I started asking him questions about their functionality, and reasoning behind needing a verbal confirmation. I stood there blankly for a few seconds. I realized if this admin guy could be disrespectful, and considering their lack of dentists, and even other reviews I've read about this place I'd be extremely hesitant to get any dental work from here. Be careful, the ambiance of this place looks like they'd tell you you'd have 10 cavities when you don't just to bill insurance. read more

I hadn't been to a dentist in 15 years and they didn't make me feel bad. I needed scaling and root planing and 3 fillings. It was expensive but I hadnt been in nearly half my life and dentists are expensive and my insurance is cheap, even so it wasn't as bad as it could be. They did a good job, they were friendly and kind. Livys my hygienist was especially wonderful, she made me feel at ease and cared for. No fuss, no one tried to upsell me on procedures I didn't need. Would recommend to anyone who is on a budget, who lives in the area, or who is nervous about returning to dental care! read more

I had not been to the dentist in several years. I finally decided to go and could not have been happier with Dr.Dental. Dr. Patel is kind, thorough, and a very skilled dentist. Bridget was my hygienist and she was fantastic. She was friendly and really put me at ease throughout my whole appointment! Kelly at the front desk is also wonderful and helped me figure out what to do with my insurance. Extremely disappointing experiences with the Alston location. Beyond reasonable wait time within the lobby area (35 minutes plus) followed by a rushed inadequate appointment. Technician only completed two of the four x-rays before Dentist came in to "clean" my teeth. Clean in quotes as he did not brush, polish, scrape or floss my teeth. My entire visit lasted one hour, however less then 10 minutes was spent cleaning/examining my teeth. read more

Stay away. Had been a customer with them for a year just out of convenience - they were a block from my apartment. Each time I went, which was later in the afternoon, they were already running behind and I usually wait 15-20 min before I get to a dental hygienist. During my last appointment I had to walk out - I waited 20 minutes in the waiting room, sat in the chair for 10 min before the hygienist saw me. Then waited 30 minutes while the dentist was "finishing up with another customer". After being assured multiple times that she would be right with me, I get up and walk out to the waiting room to see everyone standing around laughing and joking with the mailman who comes in often to chat up the receptionist. I had other things to do that day and didn't have time to wait around - I let them know and told them I wouldn't be rescheduling. read more

After reading all the positive yelp reviews I decided to give this place a shot, even though it does look like a "hole in the wall." Inside it actually does look very clean and legitimately professional place, which is why I didn't give it one star. I had an appointment at 3pm and got there 15 minutes early since I was a new patient. I didn't get seen until 3:30! That was just the start. I then went into a room to get my xrays done where a young man proceed to shove plastic bits forcefully into my mouth even though they were clearly too big. It was extremely painful and it wasn't until over half the xrays were done that he offered me a smaller size bit. After he was done, the doctor came in. She was very nice and made me feel comfortable by talking me through everything she did. The cleaning seemed rather short though. I had a general cleaning so its not particularly a lengthy procedure but it definitely felt much short than other cleanings I've had in the past. Plus my teeth didn't feel as clean. In sum, despite the professional office and friendly doctor I couldnt overlook a 45 minute wait, incredibly painful xrays and a short, not-so-thorough cleaning. This should have been a good experience but it was not. read more

I can't speak about Dr. Chen who has been running the show for a long time (and to phenomenal reviews), but my experience here with a different dentist at Dr. Dental was an absolute nightmare. I'll summarize: - Friendly hygenist, but a joke of a cleaning. An extremely brief tooth polishing and about 15 seconds total of flossing, then x-rays. Brief ultrasound cleaning as well. - The x-rays come out, and the dentist comes in and says I need to get over 7 fillings. SEVEN FILLINGS. - I ask him how it's possible when I had no signs six months prior, and he just shrugs and leaves shortly after. - Five minutes later, they hand me a billing plan for over $1,000 to get them all filled. - I ask to refer my x-rays to a different dentist, one I trust, and it takes a week (and coming into the office in-person to ask again) before they finally oblige. Now, here's the real kicker. A second dentist reviews the x-rays, and says they're absolutely terrible and there's no way anyone can see cavities on them with confidence. There are obvious financial motivations for filling cavities (see: my potential $1k+ bill), and it's an easy thing to "see" a "potential cavity" on a shoddy x-ray. It's a well-known thing in the world of dentistry - a quick search will tell you all you need to know. This isn't a family practice anymore. It's a chain - a business. As such, I recommend you stay as far away as possible and find someone who has it out for your plaque, not your wallet. read more

Rated R: blood and gore. This review is specifically for Dr. Chen and the kickass job he's done at ripping my wisdom teeth out - but can you honestly expect anything else from a guy with a Harvard Dental School degree? Nah. One terrific day in October, two of my wisdom teeth started bugging me to the point of being unable to eat, sleep, or function normally (who am I kidding - at all). I showed up at Dr. Dental (they work past regular hours and are open on Saturdays - thank the Lord!), they ran the xrays, Dr. Chen took a look at my set of painful pearly whites, and determined that the wisdom teeth do, in fact, need to go. But since taking all 4 at a time would require me to be put under, and the recovery would take forever, he suggested that we do local shots of Novocaine and take out 2 at a time. What do I know? He's the doctor! An appointment was scheduled promptly for my next available Saturday. I showed up. I got numbed. He went for it. One of the two teeth cracked as he was pulling them, but there wasn't even a glimpse of panic in his eyes. This guy knows what he's doing and he does it well. Not even 15 minutes in, one set was gone, and I was on my way to a pharmacy for some prescription strength Tylenol, chewing on gauze. I was back to work on Monday, and people wondered where my chipmunk cheeks have gone. Let me tell you a secret - my face was never swollen. Dr. Chen ripped those suckers out without even a trace of invasion (besides the fact that I was in a painkiller daze/droopy faced for a day or so, but that's what drugs do to you, kids - STAY IN SCHOOL!). A couple of weeks later, I was back in Dr. Chen's seat for the second, less bothersome set to be removed. It was like deja vu - in and out in 20 minutes or less, no chipmunk face, barely any pain, back to work on Monday. All in all, Dr. Chen is a pro. Nestled between Blanchard's Liquors and a bunch of discount futon emporiums on Harvard Ave in Allston is by far the best dentist I have ever been to. I have moved around a lot, and have two children, AND tend to be on the lower income side and relying on state insurance. So let's just say I have seen the *whole* range - and when it comes to someone fiddling around in my mouth with needles, I don't really like to experience those on the other end of the competence or comfort scale. So what a surprise to strike gold on a somewhat run down street of Allston. So what if I have to shuttle my kids past the homeless guys and partiers getting started early? It is worth it to have the pleasure of being treated by Dr. Tantiras. Dr. Tantiras is unlike any other dentist I have had. She is young, energetic, and extremely personable. Your only challenge is not being able to chat back the whole time due to the needles and implements darting in and out of your mouth. You will want to though, - due to the interesting topics she brings up. She will put you right at ease! On my last visit, we talked about relationships, her childhood in Greece, my kids, long eyelashes, and oh yeah - how I need to floss better. Barely noticed the novocaine going in due to this kick-ass lady! I recommend her highly and I hope I have to go back soon so I can hear more about the latest developments in her love life. She is trying to convince my kids to become dentists someday too and she just might do it. read more

This was the nicest surprise I've had in years. For years I passed Allston Family Dental and judging by the storefront look; I thought it was second rate. But, I am happy to say I was very wrong!!! First of all, the staff there is very nice and pleasant. I have had two appointments so far and have seen both Dr. Jasti and Dr. Chen. They have up-to-date modern equiptment and both dentists were nice, professional and did a really great job. I am so glad I gave Allston Family Dental a chance. It is first rate!!! read more

I hate the dentist with a passion. But this place has the nicest people, plays current music (not elevator music) and treat you like a neighbor. the biggest thing is that they dont embarrass you about your teeth or put you down. There just happy you came! Dr. Chen is great. There is usually a wait if your in the afternoon bc Dr. Chen tries to do his best work and get you done that day, which i appreciate. I remember while hunting for Allston Family Dental, I walked right past it assuming it was a dry cleaners or something. From the outside, especially with all the snow and slush obscuring everything, the place looked small and sketchy with hardly anybody in the waiting area. Employees were also speaking in another language, so I was nervous to say the least. However, everyone was extremely nice and friendly, answering any and all questions I had. I had a sore tooth at the time and they did a thorough job checking it to make sure nothing was wrong. Turns out everything was fine and I ended up having the usual semi-annual cleaning. They were fast and efficient, and gentle too! I've had dentists in the past that would aggressively jab at my teeth until I'd grimace. But the dentist I had here was wonderful. I walked out with my mouth feeling very clean. :) As I exited, the lady at the front desk said she will send a postcard to my address as a reminder for my next semi-annual cleaning. Tonight was my third and final visit to Dr. Dental in Allston. Each time I've had an appointment, the wait is at least 20 minutes. Meh, that's not the worst for a doctor's office, right? Sure! Tonight, I left work early to get to my appointment. When I got there, they said it would be a small wait. I thought, no biggie, I usually have to wait a few when I'm here. Tonight I waited a full hour before I left. An HOUR. No call ahead to let me know. No option to reschedule. Just "a little wait" and an hour of silence. This practice has no respect for their patients' time. An hour long wait??? NO CALL? Really? You couldn't have told me ahead of time? Or maybe it's because the dentist is in such a rush to squeeze everyone's fillings in at the end of their cleaning, that she can't be bothered by the other patients scheduled that day. I don't know what the problem is. Poor time management or just a total lack of respect for patients. Either way, I waited WAY longer than a reasonable amount of time. I told the receptionists as calmly and politely as I could manage that I was leaving, cancelling, never coming back, and to please tell the dentist. And if I get a bill in the mail for cancelling last minute, I'll know for sure that it's a lack of respect for their patients. Based on some other reviews, this appears to be an ongoing problem for them. Emergency appointments happen, but it's customary to notify other patients if you can't make time for them that day, and let them reschedule. If you can't give me that curtesy, then I can't be expected to be pleased with it. I'm NOT happy. read more

I strongly recommend requesting Dr. Niraja Patel. She's an effective communicator who explains what and why procedures are needed. I needed a root canal and received quick, professional, and wonderful service. I felt completely comfortable because she cares about her patients. It was a Saturday morning and I needed a wisdom tooth extracted. I spent the day before in pain after a cavity caused my tooth to chip and was causing diffuse pain in my jaw. After calling around to find someone open during the weekend and with an availability to squeeze me in, the only place I could find was a place in Cambridge that would only take me for a consult on Monday. Thanks to Yelp I found Dr. Dental and called the moment they were open. They were able to squeeze me in that very morning and quoted a fair price. Although they were very willing to remove my tooth, they made sure it was appropriate before doing so. They looked at imaging I had done at other dentist's offices and recommended I get another set that day to make sure the procedure could be done at their office or if it would be better for me to go to a more specialized place. Once I was numbed up the extraction process took no more than a few minutes and I was sewn up and on my way in no time. The experience itself was painless and the recovery following was uneventful. Since it was only 1 tooth rather than all 4, I still ate normally and went about life as normal. Very thankful they were able to see me under short notice and still provided me great service. I look forward going back for my future dental needs that are hopefully routine and not emergencies.. read more

Found this place because it was in network with my insurance, and the yelp reviews looked reasonable. I had walked past this office and figured it was just a plain chain, but decided to give it a shot. As noted previously, I did have to wait about 30 minutes beyond my appointment time to be seen, but they had magazines, so that kept me occupied. I was a new client, so I got the usual 6 bitewing X-rays. The technician seemed very experienced, and placed them comfortably in my mouth. After the usual cleaning Dr. Patel said he saw a very small cavity that had not shown up on X-ray. He checked with the front desk staff- quoted me a price- and filled it in the spot. My insurance ended up kicking in more than expected, so it was less than he thought. I was so appreciative that he caught it early, and took the initiative to get it done right away. I would certainly recommend this location. They seemed pretty busy while I was there! read more

I had a very negative experience at Dr. Dental today and am not usually one to write Yelp reviews, but in order to prevent others from going here, I am going to make an exception. I purchased a living social deal for X-rays and a cleaning at Dr. Dental since I am in graduate school and do not have dental insurance as part of my plan. I have gone to the dentist every six month for my entire life and have never had a cavity. It had been less than one year since my last check-up at my dentist in Washington DC and I had had NO problems, no cavities and have had no pain whatsoever with my teeth in the meantime. First, the living social deal had an incorrect address for the dentist causing me to get off the bus at the wrong location, and reroute to the new location, adding an extra 15-20 minutes onto my travel time. I'm not sure who's fault this was- Living Social or Dr. Dental. When I arrived and told the dental hygienist that it had been almost a year since my last cleaning since I started grad school and lost my dental insurance, she immediately started lecturing me about how I need to come every six months and now I could have tooth decay and bad breath. She also lectured me when I told her I floss about 3 times per week. Once again, I've never had a problem with my teeth or a cavity, so this has alway been fine for me in the past. After the dentist examined me, she told me that I had not one but FIVE cavities! I made it 27 years without ever having a cavity and suddenly I had five in one visit? I am going to seek a second opinion but I'm fairly sure that the doctor, knowing that I have no dental insurance, was just trying to get money out of me. The office was also very dirty and dumpy looking and I now see why they were offering X-rays and cleanings for only $30. I should have done more research, but being in somewhat of a predicament by not having insurance, I was willing to take a risk for a cheap visit. I won't make that mistake again! read more

The one time I managed to actually be seen, the dentist and his work were average. I have no complaints. The receptionists were a completely different story. They were careless, rude and worst of all incompetent. On two different occasions I made an appointment for the following week. On both occasions I received a phone call the afternoon before confirming my appointment. When I arrived the next day I was told that I didn't have and appointment and was not seen. Yes, this happened twice. What was even worse than taking two days off for work with not even as much as an apology, was the 10 - 15 or so phone calls I received over the next month (after being turned away twice I took my business elsewhere) from a really rude young lady telling me that I skipped my appointment (funny, I never received a phone call the day before) . After the third or fourth phone call it should have been quite clear that I did not have, nor ever had an appointment with them. It was clearly a computer or some other type of error, but the receptionist wouldn't / couldn't agree. I was even warned that they would not see me anymore if I kept skipping appointments. Appointments that I never made. I guess I'm just lucky they didn't try to whack me with a $25 fee for each imaginary no show. read more

I arrived a few minutes before my 12:00 appointment, filled out my paperwork, and didn't get seen until nearly an hour later at 12:50. This was after they texted me twice and called me once to see if I was still coming. I was also the ONLY person in the waiting room except for a guy who was waiting for his friend. After being called in I was seen by a hygienist who told me I was to get 16 X-rays. 16!? I've been to a few dentists and have never had to do 16 for my first visit. Not only were there a lot but they were extremely uncomfortable as the pieces they used were way too big for my mouth. After complaining, the hygienist basically just looked at me until I opened my mouth again to try again, as if it was me being nervous instead of me being in pain. Instead of quickly assuming I was a big wimp or something she should of realized that the problem was that the plates she gave me were simply way too big for my mouth. It was hard to even close my mouth with them in and it constantly made me gag needing for multiple re-tries. This is nothing I ever had a problem with at other dentists. Finally at the end she switched to a smaller plate as if she was doing me a favor and said that she would do it but that doing so was "no good" and the doctor would probably not like the way the images would come out. She was not very skilled at being a dental hygienist and needs improvement in her bedside manner. When I asked her why there were so many x-rays she said it was normal to have 16 on your first visit and that I would need 6 more on my subsequent visits. WHAT!??? This is something I have never heard of and smells like they try to do the most someone's insurance company will pay for instead of what is actually needed. I was a little relieved when the doctor came as she constantly asked me how I was doing during my cleaning. Dr. Patel was also much more gentle with her hands and tools. However, she brought up a cosmetic issue that no other dentist had ever brought up before. Additionally, one time I had asked a dentist about this issue and they quickly brushed it off because they said it was not medically necessary. Here however she devoted a bunch of minutes to telling me that I should know my options and that I should ask the secretary for pricing and let them know.
