Rascist Manager and security!!!!! I was a customer here for a couple of months ago, every single time they would follow my husband around. Every single time we shop and spend our money there. There's cameras everywhere. So if someone is stealing you can see it on camera. Yet , with no evidence they kept following around my black husband everywhere. No one else would be followed just him. I even went on a random day and I noticed that there's was so many customers and yet the manager and security were behind the counters on their phones. I confronted the manager about it and he did not care for me being a customer and spending almost $300 at his business. He told me "why i brought up color" and I told him "because your store is located in flatbush, just because my husband is black you don't get to racially profile him before entering the store. As someone who has shopped at this place for 7 years because it's near my apartment, I have two pieces of advice: 1. Check the expiration date on everything you buy here. They seem to be in the habit of stocking a lot of almost expired products and leaving them on the shelves after the sell by date. I have been burned multiple times. 2. Prices are a lot better at Flatbush Food Co-Op. Prices for vegetables are way better at any other place on the same block as this spot. read more

Horrible. I ordered from here on DoorDash. They didn't have 5 out of the 8 items I needed so I canceled the order and they still charged me a full 75 dollars (full order amount). I live right around the corner and i was happy when this place arrived. It has almost everything that Whole Foods sell but I assume because of convenience many things are at a higher selling point. The guys working on the floor are extremely helpful and kind. All of the produce Is fresh and they are fully stocked with all the supplements you need. I wish the cashiers were as polite as all the other staff but they are NOT. I had a horrid few moments with the cashier at the first register. First she told me my total was 38 bucks then it jumped to 40.72 after I handed her 2 twenty dollar bills. Not want to break another 20 I asked can I pay with Apple Pay she said yes but I quickly decided to break the bill. She yelled at me and asked WHAT ARE WE DOING HERE.! And snatched the third twenty out of my hand. It was about 40 minutes before the store was closing. She clearly wanted to go home but that's not my problem. It is free to be polite to customers. You actually get paid to do so. Why is it so hard for for these cashiers at this store ? I have no clue. To be fair there is one Dominican guy who is the only male cashier and he is awesome. All the other can kick rocks. I rather have whole foods delivered and pay cheaper rates with better service. This could actually be a great store, it is just getting some major things wrong. 1. There's always a guy standing outside the entrance asking people for money. He's kind, but that's a real imposition to be asked for money every time I'm visiting the store. Sometimes multiple times per day. Other people complain about this too. 2. Once you find a product you like, good luck finding it again. So many of the products are gone for a long period of time or are never there again. They say you can special order, but who wants to keep special ordering something and going through the process of finding and asking the right person. They should be like any store, check their inventory and see what does and doesn't sell. 3. The fresh cut fruit isn't always so fresh. 4. They don't accept coupons for items that are on sale. And, they always give a newspaper type advertisement checking out which is basically a list of their products. There is no benefit or coupon to entice me to come back to the place. It's a nice store, just some things that irk people a lot. So instead we've started going to both the natural market and food coop on Cortelyou more frequently. read more

I frequent this store a lot because it's the closest grocery store to me that has vegan meats/cheese which is awesome. Everyone working here is friendly and I have zero complaints about them :') Only advice I have is DO NOT BUY ICE CREAM FROM HERE. EVER. You think I would have learned my lesson after the second time but nope. On THREE separate occasions, I bought a pint of ice cream (different brands each time) and they were ALL crunchy from freezer burn. This ONLY happens when an ice creams completely thaws/melts and is then re-frozen. I tried Ample Hills, Talenti and So Delicious. Two of them were from different freezers and were around $7-$10 per pint. I HAVE NO IDEA why no one else has complained about this and I hope someone from the store reads this and fixes the freezers. read more

The manager is rude and disrespectful. I purchase items from this expensive store often and on this day the person preparing juices didn't arrive on time and when the store opened. When I asked when the person would be in he said that he doesn't know. After waiting about 10 mins I kindly asked the manager if he would be open to working something out with me later when I returned given the inconvenience. He spoke over me, made up madddd excuses like - maybe he's sick, it might be the train - I don't know what it is. I proceeded to share that i hear him and that from a business perspective there could be something he could do for me (listen it's a juice I'm not asking for a lot), but anywho he continued to be rude and dismissive. I hear the register cha ching every time I come in here. I'm going to try not to gripe about the prices but dag! Everything costs sooo much. I know it's because it's only one Downtown and not a million. I can't compare this place to Trader Joe's like I want to. The hours are nothing like the Flatbush Coop, but it's closer. I feel like they have a larger selection and I've been able to shop for a lot of things. They do what a lot of neighborhood health food stores don't do - they stock more than one brand of something. I feel like I'm always forced (not really) to just get whatever a place has, but not here. They have a good selection of almost everything. A new awesome Organic market! WooHoo! I don't think that everything they have there is organic, but a nice portion of it certainly is! They have more herbal remedy teas than I've seen in one location (they take up an entire aisle), and a good selection of all the basics. I got a small organic chicken for $4.60, some broccoli rabe for $2.35, and an amazing organic kefir for around $4. They also have a juice/smoothy bar right up front where they make fresh and healthy mixes upon request, and a pharmacy style counter where you can get advice for what types of herbal supplements to take. They also have aisles wider than almost every grocery store I've ever been to in NYC. One of the owners/manager saw me pick up the rabe an immediately preceded to tell me how to cook it properly. Thanks! The staff was friendly and helpful, delightfully attentive. The prices either match the prices of the same products in other grocery stores in the area, or are lower. Woah, this place is like an oasis. I've shopped at the Park Slope Food Coop, Union Market, Fresh Fanatic, Khim's and all the other hot new organic markets, but this one really stands out. The staff here are downright friendly, everything is well stocked, and the selection is fantastic. Prices are a hair less than the competition, which is always a plus. This neighborhood is kind of out of the way for me, so I am only around here once or twice a week, but I do go out of my way to make a trip to this market. If I lived in Prospect Park South or Ditmas, this would be part of my daily routine. What a treat. The juice bar is really nice, especially after a few hard laps around the park, I love stopping in for some watermelon juice. read more

Great find in the neighborhood - it's not easy finding healthier food options in this area. This is a lovely, clean, well-maintained shop with an excellent, diverse selection of most products, as well as a juice bar and some prepared meals you can grab and bring with you to the city (or on the way home) as you jump on the B/Q at Church Ave. conveniently located a quarter-block away. A bit of a beacon nestled in an island of bodegas. I do wish they were open a bit later, though. I would have to agree a few of the criticisms other Yelpers have raised regarding the produce - while I think the quality is good, I'd recommend buying only what you need/using it quickly, as it tends not to last. Insofar as pricing, its obviously expensive compared to other shops in the area, but it is selling different products. If you compare their prices to other Brooklyn health food markets, the prices are quite reasonable (and the selection more than reasonable). Besides, Momma always told me that you get what you pay for. read more

One of the best places to get a wide variety of organic and all natural foods , juice, smoothies, and lots of fresh produce. They also carry lots of nut, beans and drieded fruits which you can weight yourself. If you are a tea person boy do they have a wide selection of teas and coffee and all natural juices. I try something new every time I go there. My favourite things to get there are the all natural soaps, juices, and smoothies. read more

I was so excited to have stumbled upon this Organic Market. It can be difficult to find organic goods in the neighborhood. This is my go-to spot for organic hair/ skin oils and select food items. They also have an amazing smoothie bar. The only down side is that items her can be pricey. read more

Bringing them down another star. Although some of the cashiers are very pleasant, there are definitely a few that have zero customer service skills and seem to treat customers differently depending on appearance. Tonight I went in to pick up a couple of things and got in line behind a person that was clearly coming back form work -- well dressed, full set of make-up. The cashier (according to my receipt, her name is Ram) was extremely friendly towards this woman, even going as far as wishing her a wonderful weekend. Then it was my turn. I was dressed in sweats, no make-up... Ram wouldn't even make eye contact with me, much less tell me my order total or wish me a great weekend. I also agree with others, they will follow you around the store. I find they do this to me when I'm dressed down in my sweats or gym clothes. I understand that this is Brooklyn, but I am (or was) a very frequent customer of this place, they see me like every other day... they should know by now that I've never shop lifted and at the very least have their cashiers treat everyone with respect. I'm totally disgusted after shopping here tonight. Ram needs to stop judging and learn some manners. read more

Amazing. *Amazing*. AMAZING. Short version? Selection comparable to a miniaturized Whole Foods, with the friendliest staff you will ever meet. Shop there. They deserve it! I had been living in the neighborhood for nearly a year before Downtown Natural opened, and it has hugely changed how liveable this neighborhood was. Previously, produce was usually purchased at one of the many bodega/groceries along Church Ave. The produce was limp, of poor quality, occasionally actually rotting, and the variety was limited. Downtown Natural has brought a much needed jump in produce quality, plus the availability of health food and organic options which were absent from the neighborhood. Before it opened, it had actually been difficult to find hummus, quinoa, fresh basil, mint or parsley, whole wheat stone ground bread, coarse salt, sea salt, *anything* that wasn't hyperprocesed in the neighborhood. That's the sort of night and day difference the opening of Downtown has made to food quality in the neighborhood. As I said before... AMAZING! So seriously, if you live in the neighborhood, why would you fight your way through crowds to the Stop and Shop? And then just stand in line for 45 minutes waiting to check out while someone demands that a coupon be accepted for the wrong product? If you really live around here, you *know* what I'm talking about. Instead, save yourself the heart attack and go to a grocery store that deserves the name, somewhere that has an eye to appealing food presentation and customer service. Go to Downtown Natural Market. I love this place. I was jumping up and down when it opened. I am very conscious of what I put in my body and love organic clean foods, and there is nothing else around the area like this...AND its by the train! They have a good selection and their prices are on par or less than whole foods. Their smoothies and juices are delicious! ALSO since it is more mom and pop than whole foods...I feel like, as a regular customer, that they know me and they are all very sweet and welcoming. I shop here more often than I'd like. There's always an issue. If it isn't some cashier criticizing my kid it's that they overcharged me or forgot to ring everything up and I get home missing half my groceries. And they'll blame the customer for that! Wether I was charged or not, going all the way back to the store is a huge inconvenience. It's happened so many times and they don't take responsibility. It's also freezing in there, and they run out of things and never order them again. The guy at the vitamin counter is just outright mean. He yells at me and I've seen him yelling at other people. I'm simply not going there anymore. Seven years of this BS is enough. Shop at Frontier Natural Market on Cortelyou Rd or at the Flatbush Food Coop. I've shopped here from time to time because they have certain food brands that are not available at other nearby stores. They also have a juice bar and some tasty pre-packaged foods.The prices are very high and it's clear who the demographic is who shops here. However I have completely stopped shopping here due to the awful customer service I've received from the employees. The cashiers are sweet but everyone else is rude and unfriendly. And this has happened every time I've shopped here. Whenever I ask a question they say I don't know and walk away. I've asked to use the restroom and they claimed it was being cleaned and it would take half an hour. I think it's incredibly rude that they treat a regular customer with annoyance for asking for help and not allowing anyone to use the restroom. So I'm done shopping at this place that only exists to sell overpriced health food to gentrifiers and yuppies while treating locals like pariahs. read more

It's a market, not a co-op, so don't get it confused. I shop here when I can't get to the co-op on Cortelyou. While there is a great variety, I find popular products don't last long and are never replenished. I seems as if they bring in old food from another location because "new" items are terribly dusty. Lastly, I've been racially profiled and it was uncool. They wanted to write down all of the info from my ID, while I was making a purchase. However, they didn't ask the person ahead of me to do the same. The juice bar is okay if you're in a rush and can't juice on your own. I come to this location every now and then when I need one or two items due to the fact that they are overpriced. This particular evening (same day this review was submitted) I brought items and went to the juice bar where this young man with glasses was serving. I patiently wait 10 mins for him to finish one customer. When it was finally my turn he proceeds to instead acknowledge the customer behind me regarding her order. I say to him excuse me but I am next in line and I have been waiting. Instead of correcting it he proceeds to justify it by tell me the custome is a "regular", mind you I am a "regular" at the downtown Brooklyn location. No apologies offered. The hours on yelp are incorrect. It's 9:15 on a Sunday and the store isn't open. The store itself is OK, it's a little bit pricey for certain items, but does carry a lot of organic, Eco friendly produce. The quality of the fruit and veg though is pretty bad, unless organic means that your produce is fairly frequently mouldy. read more

This place is great, although it doesn't totally satisfy all of my grocery shopping needs, it's good for natural/organic staples like milk, butter, bacon, eggs, grains/beans, nuts, juices... (Yes, bacon is a staple. Don't judge me.) It is, however, not a gourmet market... which means it still isn't a direct replacement for a monthly Whole Foods or Fairway run for me. They do not carry good, fresh olive oil and have a very limited selection of meat products. I also don't buy organic produce religiously, so I end up buying organic dairy items here and veggies at my nearby 24-hour produce stand... which also carries organic milk and eggs now! I do wish they had a better, fresher selection of breads. I will say: the prices are reasonable and they are really very friendly. If you're into frozen foods, herbal remedies, teas, vitamins - they have that stuff in spades. They also have a remarkable selection of natural and organic condiments and dry goods. Need spelt flour? They've got it. Chia? Got it. 4 different kinds of quinoa, and like 30 different breeds of rice? Got it. I bought an enormous (32oz, maybe?) jar of honey there on sale for like $12 once. I am convinced I'll be chipping away at that till I die. I do wish they had better cheese and meat sections, but I can see why that probably wouldn't work out. If only we could convince one of the many butchers/meat shops in the neighborhood to start selling natural/organic/non-CAFO products, that would be amazing. I'd never have to set foot in a Whole Paycheck during rush hour ever again. I suppose if I want cheese and olives, and am willing to pay the price, I can always bike down to Markt... and then swing by John's Bakery. Or brave the Saturday crowds at Fairway! This place would get about 3 stars because they don't really keep up with expired items and sale items almost never ring up properly but they have a large variety of vegan and gf items and they're priced at about the same amount as other natural markets. I'm giving them one star because they racial profile, they allow some bum to beg outside of the door basically everyday and one of their employees is a lazy punk and locked the doors as i was reaching for the entrance handle at 745pm when they close at 8pm. I hurried from work to get there on time. And then the loser proceeds to give me a feces-eating grin and sarcastically waves at me while he's locking the door. He's a total loser. Like many others have said, this place is only good for a few things, namely organic eggs & milk, plus the juice bar. They also have a pretty good prepared food selection if you're looking for a quick healthy lunch but don't want to spend tons of money (I remember the turkey sandwich being under $5). There is pretty much no meat selection, but if you need some staples like overpriced heritage grains or whatever, then Downtown Natural Market is the place for you!! Also, YES THEY HAVE WHEATGRASS! This is a very cute, unexpected, and convenient organic market a few doors down from the Q/B train. It's a great alternative to the generic supermarket up the street on Church ave. My only gripe is that there should be way more of a fruit selection. However, the fruits that are there are fresh and yummy. I get the 2 mangoes for $3 deal in the mornings when I stop in. read more

Usually my go to place when looking for dairy free alternatives. I went recently to pick up a couple items & right from the get-go I realized I was being followed by the workers who would act like they were doing something in the same aisle yet would just stand there staring. Granted, it could have possibly been because I had other bags with groceries although I've seen reviews from others about being followed throughout the store. Extremely disappointed & felt uncomfortable the whole time. I don't think I will be going back which is unfortunate since it was the most convenient place for me. Produce section is very small and I had a minor run-in with the manager when he refused to process a return for a deodorant a friend I introduced to the store bought that gave him a rash (I called the company in his presence and sorted it all out in the end). I'm also not fond of the supplements specialist because she tries to sell you what they have, not what you want, then gets annoyed if you decline. If parking wasn't such a nightmare over there, I would be more of a regular. However it's conveniently right down the block from the D train stop for commuters looking for organic foods that won't break the bank and/or who don't feel like lugging groceries home on the train from Wholefoods. Been going to this grocery store for just under 3 years. Its relatively reliable, however, in recent months a man stands at the door outside and forcefully asks for food/money. After a long day of working my ass off I'd prefer not to be guilt tripped when I'm getting milk and eggs. Today I saw him, he hassled me, and I said screw it and didn't even go in. The store should do something about him because it cost them money tonight. Thought I'd give a shout-out about a Veggie-Fruity Bar I just bought ($1.75). It's made of oats, raisins, almonds, mixed vegetables and fruits -- kind of like a vegan carrot cake. Very yummy (wish they'd put an expiration date on it though). This place is truly a great addition to a very mixed neighborhood. The produce and meat are usually extremely expensive, but there's lots of other little goodies in the size aisles that are affordable and hard to find in the area. I'd give it four stars, but sometimes there's expired items left on the refrigerated shelves...be sure to check expiration dates!
