The host of the comedy thing (didn't catch his name but he looks to be mid 50s, long hair & beard, a beer gut and is just a few inches shy of 7 ft tall) is a physically intimidating, angry communist (his words) that apparently has never had a nice day in his life and has no problem taking that fact out on complete strangers. Not a fun hang.

The pub itself looks like one you'd find in some forgotten little village in rural Ireland -- a place that time left behind from the 60s or 70s. It reeked of cigarette smoke (which is still allowed in bars in Alabama apparently). The bartender/owner was very nice and seemed genuinely happy to have customers on a slow Sunday afternoon. He was helpful in recommending some beers (they have a good selection on draft -- most from regional breweries). We ordered the Irish spice bags of course and enjoyed our beers while we waited. The fried chicken pieces and French fries came in the bag, well seasoned. On the side were the fried green peppers and fried onions and the golden curry. We added the peppers, onions and curry to the bags, shook them up and tore them open to dig into this hearty Irish treat. The chicken pieces were tender and nicely breaded (the breading did not fall off). They were quite tasty on their own. The fries were crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The peppers and onions were fried to light brown and had just the right amount of softness. The golden curry was only mildly spicy with a great curry flavor. All mixed together, it was everything we hoped it would be. Well worth the trip to a smoky dive bar in a strip mall (we didn't even notice the smoky smell once the food came). If you've never had a spice bag, this place does them well. Food and service 5. Atmosphere 3. That accounts for the 4 rating.

Cool spot with good drinks!…read more Love the cocktail, wine, and beer menu here. They have sooo many drinks to choose from. First time in, I got the espresso martini and the hop town margarita while my husband got 2 beers he really enjoyed. Heads up that it gets busy on Friday nights, but worth stopping in!

You can find Hoptown Beer Bar at 9431 Bradmore Ln Ste 101, Ooltewah, TN 37363. This is in a newish…read moreretail village and while not technically Chattanooga, it's close enough that it may be worthwhile to visit if you're nearby. There's plenty of parking nearby so you don't have to walk far. This neat beer bar reminds me of the crowler shops that you used to find around Atlanta, with around 30 taps containing about a thrid local beer, so you can sample several local breweries without visiting each one (they're mostly not too near each other so this is very convenient). The taproom "beertender" seemed to be fairly knowledgeable regarding the various offerings - there's also a convenient list highlighting the different beers with style notes. We sat at the bar and were able to bring in some food from the nearby restaurants (I grabbed some wings at the nearby Marthie Ann's which were excellent). To drink I tried Hoptown's own Orange Mango Wheat - a somewhat basic wheat beer with hings of sweet tangerine and mango - nothing special. I had a Maine Brewing "Lunch" with the wings which is always a winner - it's an exceptional New England IPA. Service was great - I can see myself hitting Ooltewah just to come by for a break in driving.

An exceptionally rainy day broke just long enough for us to sprint from our car to the cover of…read moreAtomic Johnny's. Neither of us had eaten here before, but both had been wanting to try this place out. First and foremost, don't come out in your Sunday's finest, this place is the true definition of Dive Bar. Come as casual as you want and you'll feel comfortable. Only one other person in the place we were able to grab any seat we wanted. The bartender was quick to our table to get drink orders and give us menus. I went for one of the four Grenades they offered - no not a drink it's one of their signature dishes. Think Nachos but with French fries instead of chips. They had a steak offering as well as ground beef, chicken and pork. I went for the Fresh Prince which came piled with steak, grilled onions and bell peppers and queso (added some pico on the side). Really good dish. Flavor of the steak was that of a classic philly cheese steak. Generous portion for the price. Hard to go wrong here, really the hardest decision is which of the four to order. My fiance had the Porky - which simply put was a loaded burger, but it was oh so much more. Topped with slaw and smoked pork, smothered in bourbon BBQ add some cheddar, lettuce, tomato and fried onion straws and you're in burger heaven. Again, the portion was more then generous and full of flavor. Prices are right on point. Service was good and even though they got busier the longer we stayed, we continued to get checked on through the meal. While you wait for your food, the pool was free (not sure if it's that way all the time - but Saturday afternoon it is). We wouldn't hesitate to come back and try this place out and some of the other menu items. Really great food. Great Staff. Great Prices.

Very unique spot with some of the best food around!!…read more Their burgers are great along with their quesadillas!!
