I will now be a regular at this park as my grandson just joined the Union Park Little League for teeball. There are about 4 separate baseball fields. They are all nice and clean, well kept. The coach takes his time teaching the kids, these is a group of 8 4 to 6 year old kids that don't know how to play the game yet. It is super cute to watch! The park itself has a skating park, gazebos, a cute kind of beach area, kids water park, basketball court, I believe volleyball too. Downey park is well maintained neighborhood park with surprisingly a lot of space and activities! My friends and I were looking for a place to play pickleball and we were shocked to see that there were actually 8 courts! It's nice that every two courts were gated off, with plenty of space to run around. And there are a lot of tables nearby. read more

This park had to be recently renovated. They have pickleball courts behind the basketball field. It's a really nice place with ample parking, several courts, and a big blue shaded area; if you're waiting around for a turn to use courts. It gets busy on the weekends so go early. read more

Downey Park has a children's playground, a pavilion, a volleyball court, bathrooms, and a relatively decent amount of open area where you can just chill. Downey Park is a very large park in east Orlando! Here's a rundown of some of what they have: - two playgrounds - splash pad - dog park - skate park, basketball and volleyball courts - bathrooms with changing tables My son and I visited with some friends most recently for the splash pad and playground. Loved the size of the splash pad and the fact that there was seating and covered areas for adults to sit. It is all fenced in as well. It costs $2 per child during the summer season so bring cash. We went to the playground towards the back of the park. The playground and swings had no shade and was hot but the kids enjoyed it just the same. The women's restroom was not clean on the day we visited but they do have changing tables for babies. All in all, Downey Park is a park I would come back to for the splash pad! read more

I can't believe that Downey Park has such a low rating on Yelp. The park is huge and loaded with everything that a family would want. Volleyball, Baseball, large splash pad, two playgrounds, workout area, pavilions, grills, picnic tables and lots of open green space and parking. There is also a beautiful dock that allows you to walk out into the lake and enjoy the view. I saw plenty of trash cans and benches throughout the park. It is well maintained and has two restroom areas. You can rent out the pavilions for parties and family gatherings. The splash pad was closed when I visited but I noticed lots of lounge chairs and plenty of room for comfortable supervision. read more

This is a great little park in East Orlando. On Dean road near the intersection of SR-50, this park provides a few pavilions for parties (not sure if free first come first served or for rent), several more picnic tables, basketball course, a water splash park for the little ones and a dog park as well. There's even a ramp area for BMX or skateboarding, which is pretty cool. My boyfriend and I frequent the dog park, where they have it sectioned off for little dogs and big dogs. It's double gated, meaning you have to go through and close one gate before you go through another one leading into the actual dog pens. This is to help avoid any escapees! I have 2 suggestions on how the city can improve this park, though. One, the dog areas are 100% dirt. There's no grass or other flooring other than dirt. It would be nice for both the dogs and their humans to have something else to walk/play in. The second is there is not a walking path. If you want to walk around the lake or the park, you have to walk in grass, dirt, or the car park. Overall a good option for pups and humans alike! read more

This is a great dog park. Not as big as some, but has a good group of regulars and lots of shade.

This is the first dog park we've been to where our dog has been able to find a play mate in another dog that it just loves and loves him back and they play and play and play. It was really rewarding and I think the change of environment was great for our dog who is used to the roominess and chaos of Fleet Peeples Park. I did notice, however, that a lot of dogs are obsessed with squirrels at this park... and there's a lot of barking dogs. But I plan to go more and get a better idea of how this place really is. It's clean and mellow, plenty of places to sit and hang out. But watch out for the deep holes dug by a lot of the dogs there! I look forward to getting to know some regulars and their dogs :) read more

While this is a very popular dog park, my star rating doesn't really have anything to do with that since I don't have a dog. I enjoy working out in parks; specifically I enjoy doing calisthenics in the park. So when I visit Orlando, this is one of my favorite parks to do that. My friend lives about 10 minutes away. You can do muscle-ups and/or pull-ups on the monkey bars. You can do L-holds, hand-stands and any other cool calisthenics tricks on the parallel bars. The only drawback is that all this equipment is in the sand so I wouldn't wear your best shoes to workout. You can get a great workout here. I'd say it's 3.5-4 stars. There are lots of families and kids playing everywhere as this is a very big park. There's a basketball court too if shooting hoops is what you'd prefer. I recorded a video of my workout there. This park has it all! Whoever designed it actually thought things through compared to some I've been to where I'm left wondering who the heck approved the final design. The splash pad is pretty fancy compared to most community parks and it is very well maintained. To my eyes, it still looks fairly new. So, I was quite surprised when the attendant informed me that it has been there for 13 years. There are lounge chairs with covered awnings to help shade parents and kids from the sun. Very nice. Wish all splash pads had this feature. The restrooms and changing tables are clean. There are two separate playgrounds to choose from. One is right next to the splash pad. The other is near the entrance. There are also picnic tables and grills and such, so I'm sure it's a nice place for a family to grill out. Also, the park is situated on a lake. All in all, a lovely place to take your family. read more

Then she got mad that I had my dogs out at a dog friendly park (not the splash pad area) . She had opinions on everything. No drinks for my two year old. No puppies out on my leashes by the grass. Was acting like a diaper nazi even tho my baby had a swim diaper on. At this point all my kids were sad. And even crying. My first visit to Downey Dog Park was to meet a dog that was looking for a new home. While my little shih-tzu seemed to enjoy running around with all the larger dogs in the big dog area, I can't say that I was really impressed with the park. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that they built a dog park but something seems so wrong when it's artificially made. Both the large dog and small dog areas seem somewhat small for the amount of dogs that were there. Given it was around 6pm on a weekday night so I'm sure that's one of the high traffic times but I couldn't help but feel a bit smothered. And bothered by the man-made toys for the dogs to jump around on and chase each other through. They do have benches for the human companions to lounge upon although I think I saw more dogs using them for walking on than people did for sitting on. They also had water fountains for the dogs and the two-way gate worked really well for getting the dogs in and out of the park. But after visiting Fleet People's park in Winter Park this one seriously pales in comparison. read more

I live in avalon where there is a dog park very close. However, every time I go there are no dogs there. So a while back I looked up "dog parks" and found Downey! I was super excited! I have gone her many many times and the place typically has a good handful of dogs! The park is covered with trees and super shaded which is great for the dogs in hot sunny Florida! It also is very large and has water stations. I took two stars away for 2 reason. Reason 1: sometimes there are aggressive dogs there.... And the owners know the dog is aggressive. The one time a man came in with a muzzled dog and began hammering a post into the ground to tie his dog to! The other dogs would get curious and go near the dog and it would lunge at them! Thankfully one man told the guy he had to leave. Another time a man brought a dog on a leash and stayed at the other end of the park. If a dog would go near it he would have to hold his dog back as it tried to lunge at the friendly pups. As he was doing this he was saying "sorry he is aggressive." WHY BRING YOUR AGGRESSIVE DOG TO THE PARK!? I don't get it. Reason 2: there is a small dog section and a large dog section. Several times I have had problems with people bringing their smaller dog into the big dog section. I have a boxer mix who is very energetic and loves to play/run. He doesn't know his size and will sometimes (in good intentions) trample a small dog while trying to play with it. I have had owners get mad at me. There is a small dog section for this exact reason. read more

I am not a huge fan of this dog park. Despite it's convenient location (literally 5 minutes from my house), I find myself driving to the other side of town to find a more satisfactory location... The issues: 1) It's tiny. There is a separate area for small dogs, but it is TINY. My two dogs are under 30lbs so I would typically take them in the small dog area. The grass is patchy and there's a big area with just dirt. Not sand - DIRT. There's a picnic table and a couple of benches but not much else. Even my dogs were bored. 2) It's scary. Not in the safest area of town; I would hesitate to bring my dogs here without my husband in tow. There's also a large amount of really huge pit bulls that frequent the park. I love all dogs, but it makes me nervous to see them roaming around in there with their owners not even keeping a close eye on them. 3) It's dirty. The place just generally looks unkempt and not cared for. I don't know about you, but I don't feel comfortable bringing my pets to a place like that. One upside: 1) Convenience. It's located just off of E. Colonial Drive and Dean Road - kind of in the middle of the east side of town. If you live near UCF, this would be the most convenient place for you to bring your dogs. I'd say... it's worth it to take a little bit longer of a ride and try out another one of Orlando's dog parks. You'll feel better and more comfortable in the end! read more

I came to Downey Park for the dog park. A real let down with now having to enter the dog park from within the park (the old way was parking just off of colonial), which is a long drive in (past the now closed lake), and parking isn't in front of the new dog park entrance. You have to walk your dog through a grassy area, next to the skate park to get to the gate. The major snafu is that there are no dog poop stations/bags in this area, so if a dogs poos there and the owner doesn't care, some child might run through it. Awesome. Only bonus I see to this park is that it's a grass park and not a mulch dog park. So if your dog has sensitive paws, this is a good fit. There is also a small dog and large dog section. read more

The park itself is pretty average (honestly I prefer Blanchard) but it's the additional amenities that make it worthwhile. They have a dog park which is decently sized and there's an area for large dogs and one for small dogs. This is great because I worry less about my 65lb mutt accidentally stepping on a small doggy. They also have a really cool splash pad (one of the only ones in east Orlando) and it's only $1! You really can't beat that price for water fun for your kids. The playground is so so and the lake water is kind of gross but that aside it's a pretty great place with lots to do. Oh, there is also a skate park there ! read more

On the corner of Colonial and Dean Rd in Orlando sits a fairly new dog park called Downey Dog Park. It's been there for five to six years and is not very large in size. It's also not in the best area. This park is big enough if you have a small dog who needs some space to run around, but if you have a bigger dog you're better off going to one of the other choice dog parks in the area. A good majority of the dogs that come here are pit bulls and other "dangerous" breeds, which is what makes this park unappealing to most who know about it. Mulch covers the ground and a dark green fence keeps the dogs confined. There are benches and chairs for the owners to sit on while their pet plays, but are usually overtaken by the dogs. Like most parks, the hours are restricted and posted on the front gate. And, as is usual, you must pick up after your pet. Overall, if you can, I would avoid this dog park and find a bigger, cleaner one for your pet to play and run around in. read more

Downey Park is a fairly large park with lots of community sports areas, and plenty of picnic tables. It may not be the most impressive park in town, but it will suit your needs if you are close by. The Good: Cool off: Downey Park has a nice splash playground that is really fun for the little ones to play in. And even if you didn't bring a bathing suit, you don't get all that wet and after playing around a bit, it's easy to dry off. Take the Pooch: There's a seperate dog park area where you can bring your dog to go run around. I think it's unleashed as well, so you can really let your dog go crazy if you want. The Bad: Not terribly amazing: This definitely isn't a park I would visit too often, just because it's sort of small and doesn't have much to do, besides the splash playground (which IS very nice during the summer) FYI: It is a good idea to know where this place is because it is also an official hurricane shelter for Orange County. We came for the splash pad. It was really nice, lots of splash fountains and plenty of shady spots. Permanent tree sized giant umbrellas surround the space, and there's tons of lounge chairs. No food or drinks allowed, and it's $1 per person even if you don't get wet. But we all had a great time. This was a weekday morning, and a all camp class of 10 or so 4-5 year olds came it. Absolutely love this park! I take my 40 lb lab mix there almost daily since i adopted her two weeks ago and she has a total blast. The only thing I wish they had there as well was a hose to wash off your dog before leaving. I've seen nothing but friendly dogs and friendly owners, and everyone seems to be good about picking up their dog's business. There are ample bag stations located throughout the park. read more

This is a very pretty park with a little bit of everything. We didn't get a chance to try out the dog park section but it did look on the small side. The playground was pretty big and had an area for big kids. The playground for smaller kids was strangely on the other side of the park (although I guess it does make sense that they want to keep bigger kids off that playground, it was just a little inconvenient.) There was also a sandy area for gym equipment where you could practice gymnastics moves or just exercise. It was hard ripping my 2 year old niece away from the sand. The park was lined by a nice lake and there is even a fishing pier you can walk down. It was sad to find debris and garbage inside the lake and even gave my niece an impromptu lesson in picking up trash that can harm animals. The main feature of the park was the splash pad that was pretty awesome. The water canons are not as strong as in other splash pads but they were still fun. There was also plenty of seats and shade here which you won't find at a lot of other splash pads. The attendant was super nice and let us in for free since it was kind of windy chilly day an no one was using it at the time (It's usually a $1). Will definitely come pack for the Splash pad since its closer than the Dr. Phillips one. read more

I take my yellow Labrador here all the time! It's not the best dog park in town but it's close and usually busy. There's always a group of regulars that come around five. I have grown to know a lot of the people here and their doggies. The people here are very friendly. My dog is really shy and the park is the perfect size for her. It gives her enough space to have to herself but small enough to where she'll still be noticed by other dogs. There are decent amount of pitbulls and boxers that come here but their normally great dogs. Occasionally there will be a mean dog but I normally never see them come back. If you're near this area, I would defiantly recommend it. read more

Nice and quiet usually by the dock, great place for an intimate wedding of 10-20 people. Lots of ducks turtle and large birds in the lake brush and water. There is also a sandy bank but it's closer to the splash park which might get noisy on the weekends. Downey Park is 10 minutes from my house so we try to go often. There are rarely any dogs when I go. I have tried to come at different hours but I have no luck and end up driving to Baldwin Park. It is a nice space for the dogs to run if people brought their dogs. It's Fairly clean with some dog poop. The water fountain for the dogs is broken. It will fill up but not drain. You're going to be next to a major road way so expect the noise. All in all it is not a bad dog park. I just wish more people would bring their dogs. read more

I work with an autism therapy clinic in winter park and this was our 4th time here. Usually we come in with our clients and never have an issue. (Our center director even calls the week prior to make sure we are okay to visit.) today we arrived at 11 am, and told that our group was too large and that we had to wait. Begrudgingly, we marched over to nearby picnic tables to have lunch and wait until noon. When we were finished eating we headed back over to the splash pad and was very rudely asked again how many we had. Our manager of our clinic, $23.00 cash in hand, tried to pay the attendant. To only be interrupted asking how many adults and children we had. "We have eleven clients, eleven therapists and me" finally we were given wristbands and granted access. All was well until we exited, the we were all stopped one by one to have our wristbands cut off by the attendant. Needless to say we will not be re-visiting this splash pad. read more
