Best part is, the owners are super down to earth and welcoming. For a place with so much hip stuff this is no hipsters only club- the vibe is fun & friendly and it feels like a supercool garage rock Pee Wee's Playhouse. My only complaint is that I wish they had a tad more space for records & clothes! read more

What a fantastic salon experience I had a Lulu's! I only get my hair professionally cut like once a year, and I had heard great things about this place, so I took a chance and made an appt. I got Mitra, who really listened and tuned in to what I wanted and paid attention to what my hair does naturally - and she cut it according to that, instead of trying to do her own thing and make me look like someone I'm not. Time for an update, 'cause I recently switched over to Tina 'cause of scheduling difficulties, and she gave me a short cut with long bangs, and a huge white blonde streak in front. Okay, first of all, I love my cut!!! But the amazing part is how she got my DARK Brown Mexican hair WHITE. I mean...WHITE. Im so happy!!! So glad I found this place when I moved to the East Bay. I had been traveling back to SF to get haircuts for the first year after I moved from SF to Oakland, and I finally decided to give this Oakland salon/boutique a try last March. Tina's been amazing! I've received the best haircuts of my life from Tina. Also, they have appointments available at 6:00, which is a plus since I don't like having to leave work early just for a hair appointment. I recently moved to CA from Boston and was struggling to find a hair salon. I tried two places before making the drive 45 min to Oakland to try Down at Lulu's. My hair stylist in Boston had heard a little bit about Tina and the salon and gave me the idea to go there. After a search for the perfect hairdresser, I think I have found one in Tina. She always listens to what I want, gives input when I ask (not overbearing however), and makes my hair look amazing. I have short hair with blunt bangs, and Tina is more daring than other hairdressers I've known; she's willing to really give me a lot of crazy layers. The first time I went, my hair was looking a little over-grown, but she still said it looked cute, when most other hair dressers I know would have insulted my unstyled locks. Everyone else that works here are super sweet; after I got my hair cut by Tina, Seth told me how cute it looked. After my hair cut, I always browse the racks, but I haven't bought anything, not because I haven't seen anything I liked, but because I normally only come prepared to spend money on my hair ($60 for a cut, well-worth it). Along with these reasons to come to Down at Lulu's, there's the atmosphere. I had such a positive experience with Nick that this is the first yelp review I have ever written. Nick was patient and kind as I bumbled through a description of what kind of haircut I wanted. He looked through my pictures, asked detailed questions, and talked me through what he thought would suit my hair routine / type / style. As for length he showed me where he was going to cut it before he cut it, which made me feel confident that I was going to get the exact length I expected. This place is the shit. I have never liked my hair better in my whole life. Tina and Amber both cut my hair and do a most excellent job. I also get the best vintage pieces ever here.. deadstock 60's shift dresses, my holy grail denim jacket above all other things. What is great about their selection though is really how cheap they price everything, I mean I've gotten vintage denim Versace jeans here for under $30!! Tina really has a great eye I have bought most of my prized possessions here. This shop is so cute I really couldn't dream of it any other way. I went to get a haircut on a whim and hot damn, it was a winner! I had long-ish hair and wanted to keep the length but change the style. Staring at myself in an oversized heart-shaped mirror and listening to an old school hip-hop mix, I chatted it up with Seth and came out with side bangs and hipster-ish layers. I've been getting complements right and left for the last week straight! Safe to say, this is one of the best haircuts I've ever had and I've had the whole range. (I've cut my own, let my mom cut it, been to supercuts, splurged on a Fred Segal cut and a couple at Umberto in Beverly Hills -- I can vouch that the difference between 100$ haircut and a mediocre salon can be significant.) A cut at Lulu's, however, wins the prize at half the price so, although I understand 50 bucks ain't cheap, my vote is that it's well worth it. read more

It's all so amazing that even though she's in the East Bay now, I make the trek all the way over there just to have her work magic on my layers. I've debated over whether to leave a review or not, but I received one of the worst haircuts of my life recently and wanted to warn others with similar hair. I have curly low-maintenance hair and saw Amber for a cut. I usually go to a different salon, but had a work event and needed to get a quick trim so I thought I'd try Amber out. Amber showed up late and didn't really listen to what I wanted. I left with an atrocious haircut that is so choppy it looks like a kid just randomly cut up the back of my hair. My curls are pretty ruined because Amber paid no attention to how my hair naturally curls and I'm left with short chunks of hair that no longer curl. I'm stuck wearing a short ponytail for at least a month until I can see my usual stylist who can fix the damage. My haircut is honestly so bad, it's embarrassing and I don't feel like myself. I hate to be so down on Amber, but that was truly a terrible experience. read more

I try to cut my hair myself most of the time, but once or twice a year I need to go into a quality stylist to get it done RIGHT. A cut here is on the expensive side ($60) but WELL worth it in my opinion. Mitra is charming, takes her time, and does an awesome job. Also, the store is totally awesome. The clothes/shoes are all in good condition, are attractively priced ($30 for Betsey Johnson dress or a pair of blue crystal-studded boots?). Definitely worth a visit, even though the location is in a slightly residential area. read more

I've been around hairdressers all my life. I've had Two best friends and my sister who are all top notch stylists, but alas they are all too far away now. So when I was looking to replace their awesomeness I yelped Lulu's 2 years ago and have never looked back. I've had short hair with Tina which I've loved. We've been able to grow it out which is really difficult with my wavy coarse hair and it's looked great even in the growing out stage and most recently Tina has done some amazing color. Tina is a sweetie, the place is hip, happening and a cool place to shop. I scored this great purple vintage Gucci scarf. Oh yeah they spin great tunes too. read more

Amber did a really great job on my hair, she was very chill and easy to talk to and, most importantly, knows what she is doing! I came here to get my (not-natural) blonde hair dyed darker, and I had asked for an all-over dye job. She suggested lowlights instead and said they would look much better, and she definitely wasn't lying. I've never had lowlights before but she did an absolutely amazing job. My hair has never looked this good, and I've been going to salons all over San Francisco for the past 5+ years. She's definitely a super gifted hair stylist, and a very cool person, too. read more

I went here and the staff was amazing. Really nice/ really cool. I am very observant though and noticed that they had approx.15 of the same items in both the men's and women's category, exact same shirts, exact same colors. Which is lazy clothing recruitment on their part. The store is small and I would say the items are more costumey than actual re-useable vintage clothing. They did have some things but over-all I was not impressed by their products. read more
