It's unfortunate for both myself and everyone who has to look at me that I moved to Los Angeles from Oakland. Because even though that was 1.5 years ago, I still won't let anyone else touch my hair besides Seth. What this means is that I spend most of my life in Hollywood looking like a sloppy, overgrown Cousin Itt and walking into telephone poles because I can't see through my bangs. But oh well. I just don't trust anyone here to give me a haircut like the ones Seth gave me for so many years. Both Seth and Tina give amazing haircuts, and they specialize in looks that are already so cool you don't have to worry about styling them a bunch at home. Seriously, I had the same haircut for like five years and never did anything to it besides a casual blow-dry. But every single person WHO EVER LIVED complimented me on it. I totally looked like a MODEL. Well...okay, I'm five feet tall with a pasta pouch, but I looked fucking good. Don't go in and order a "Friends" haircut or frosted tips or some shit. Seth and Tina (and Mitra!!!) want to make you look GOOD. But seriously, no matter what you want, if you communicate it well, they will make it happen fabulously. And they have an unbelievable selection of vintage clothing, jewelry, and knick-knacks even if you don't do the hair. So go, get a haircut, catch up on some gossip, and look at all that stuuuuff!!!!! All to the tune of some slaying 80s hair metal by dudes with big ones (if Tina's working) or killer gay punk by dudes with big ones (if Seth is). What can I say--THEY LOVE THE BIG ONES!!! five stars for awesome service, great hair cut by mitra and kickass atmosphere. minus one star for priceyness ($60 for a haircut -- eek!), mitra taking cash only, and the intimidation factor i was initimidated because, well, i'm lame... i'm no hipster. i love my sitcom TV and trashy celeb magazines. my bike has gears and brakes, and i buy most of my clothing new at *gasp* gap and banana republic. this place is very cool and very hipster... retro clothing, ramones posters, and people walking around with those cool hairstyles that scream "i look awesome but i would never spend time on my hair even though i secretly sometimes do." so, i was a little nervous before going in as to whether this place would give me what i wanted i've been scouring the earth (ok, the east bay and san francisco) for a great haircut place... i'm cheap, but i'm fussy, and hair is a very personal thing. after years of searching, i think i've found my place... mitra was super laid back and very approachable. we sat down with trash magazines in hand and "talked" about my hair -- seriously. she heard me on wanting something cool and edgy but also something that would allow me to be taken seriously at my job. she could tell right away i didn't want a short cut by the way i was touching my hair (so observant!) and respected the fact that i'm "wash and go" and that i get my hair cut like three times a year. i really felt like she was guiding me but really valuing my input... plus, before i left, she told me she cut bangs, etc., no charge! in the end, i walked out with a great haircut and a smile on my face. i browsed through the vintage tracksuits and shoes, but didn't buy anything... baby steps, selina, baby steps read more

I had the greatest experience with Amber! I say "experience" to encompass the haircut, styling instruction and pleasant conversation that were all part of the appointment I'm so happy I made on a whim. I said I wanted Bridget Bardot hair and asked for choppy layers. A lady who knows her 60s layers, Amber said my approach was all wrong! She proceeded to give me a great cut, thinning out my fringe and adding some layers up top. She then spent forty minutes blowing out and teasing my hair, instructing me how to get that sultry sixties look piece by piece. So happy I found her! read more

I went and got my haircut by him today and it looks amazing. I never knew that this fine limp head of hair could have this kind of volume. He gives a phenomenal shampoo where I almost fell asleep in the chair and then proceeded to give me a few tips to try at home while all the while making me totally comfortable and engaged. Wickedly awesome record collection. Copped an old school French New Wave album along with an indie girl group (Wild Weekend named after The Zeros song) and The Vikings 45. The shoes and clothes are fantastic but the shoes are more worth it (meaning: best bang for your buck) than the clothes. For a vintage, thrift shop, the clothes are a bit on the pricier side ($15-18 for a t-shirt) but, understandably so because there are not a lot of clothes there but each piece is rather unique. Definitely want to go back and dig through records and may even check out the hair stylists! Definitely worth the visit! read more

yep. made the right choice. story: i was seriously frustrated with my long (ish) hair and it's unruly fluffy foppy curls, so I called this place,..i got an appointment for an hour later...any longer and i would have clippered the heinous mass myself, thanks for hooking me up right away! i got Tina as my stylist and she was totally great, made me feel right at home, talked to me about my hair, got me goin'...cut the flop right off and now i have a fresh tight hawk that's gonna make the people swoon. she asked some polite friendly questions, and we chatted a bit, she seemed really at home in her killer little shop. the music was awesome, and other people were coming in and out shopping, so the place has a casual down home friendly vibe for sure. i have nothing but nice things to say about this place, everyone was super cool to me, and i was in and out lookin cute, feelin cute. read more

I feel bad about how things turned out with my haircut, because when I first walked through the doors I loved the store. Hot pink walls, a section full of vintage pictures of kittens, and countless other eye candy. I did love shopping, I found an adorable pink and white striped jumper, and a striped sweater and pearl beaded cardigan on the $5 rack! I had brought in a detailed picture of the haircut I wanted, and I knew it would work with my hair. I sat down with Tina and showed her the picture, and we talked about it. Then she got to it. Just because I liked an 80s vintage boutique, doesn't mean I wanted an 80s haircut. First of all, it was not anything like the picture. The one thing she did do that I asked was to give my hair more shape and fullness. Secondly, when I got home and looked at my hair up close, she did a horrible job actually cutting. The edges look choppy and frayed all over. I had been cutting my hair myself for the last couple years, and honestly I did a better job with paper scissors and a comb. The more I looked at my hair the worse it got. I couldn't figure out what was wrong exactly, but when I flatironed my hair it became drastically clear. Not only were the horrible choppy ends more apparent: I had a full on Pat Benatar femullett. I'm not exaggerating. Her blow drying and back combing it had disguised it slightly. I had to chop off the 4 inches off mullet back there to fix it, and redid my bangs myself. I almost cut my hair short, it was so awful, except I knew I'd have to go through this stage again when it grew out. Worst. Haircut. Ever. read more

You don't know what you've got 'til [you're] gone... I don't think I appreciated Mitra enough until I moved out of the area and tried getting my hair cut elsewhere. Mitra did a great job with my curly hair. She worked *with* the hair rather than some stylists who insist on cutting it wet or straightening it. I don't straighten my hair, so don't cut it that way! I always left Mitra's chair feeling happy with my style. And I always felt like she took the time to listen to what I wanted, and made really great suggestions when I was inarticulate or uninspired. She's also one of the few stylists I've ever run into where the conversation didn't seem forced or awkward, which is such a relief. read more

I cut my own hair for years because I've had the hardest time trusting any one with my hair. As you might have guessed trying to cut it myself didn't always work out so well. After reading Down at Lulu's reviews I decided to take the leap of faith and make an appointment. Tina is the best! I love this place. Tina has cut my hair 3 out of 4 times. I have to admit that I always freak out after my cuts. I think that they look ugly on me or that there is no way I could pull off such a 'do. Then I come to my senses after the compliments and realize that I look great. I have pretty straight, very thick hair if this helps anyone out there looking for a new stylist. As soon as you walk in, you want this place to succeed, and as soon as you chat with Seth, you know that it will. He's really, really nice, and the haircut was sweet as well (no hipster mullets for me, thanks, although I'm sure he could do that too, if that's what you're going for). Look past Ally. Hope this review helps someone! ________________________ I went in for a warm reddish-brown balayage. I explained what I had in mind, and showed numerous photos accurately illustrating the look I was seeking. "Yeah, totally," she says. I ended up with an embarrassing cartoon red with a hint of purple that quickly washed out into a bright orange/pink. Reddish tones have been my go-to over the years; I think it works well with my olive skin. I have had full color, highlights, and balayages at other salons -- no stylist has ever turned my hair orange. Yikes. It took Ally two weeks to respond to my voicemail (she wasn't on vacation). I went back in, restated what I wanted, and again showed photos. This time I walked out with orange brown hair. It was ridiculous. Thinking I should give her one last shot, I went in again, but this time asked for caramel highlights. I presented pictures that clearly showed the color I would like for the highlights, how I would like the highlights placed, and exactly how I didn't want them placed. She glanced quickly, saying"Yeah, I get it." It turned out a train wreck and really damaged my hair. Placement and color? Not even in the ballpark. The color was extremely ashy with a slightly green tint, and placement was precisely what I said I didn't want. It was highly ill suited for my hairstyle. And worst of all, the balayage I spent over $300 on was practically gone from the toner she put in. I didn't want her touching my hair again. Mortified, I wore a hat every day and disguised my hair as much as I could while at work until I was able to see a stylist at another salon. With this new stylist, I offered the same explanation and showed the exact same photos. Her response? "That's so simple! I do it all the time. Let me mix it up and we'll get started." Within a few hours, I walked out of the salon with exactly what I had asked for the first time I saw Ally. This new stylist was also very reasonable with her prices, unlike Ally whose prices far exceed her skill level. I once heard Ally say: "F*ck, I can't stop doing hair. It's like being a stripper: the money is too good." I felt disrespected in Ally's chair. Please consider seeing another stylist. (Side note: Who accidentally rips out a helix ring with a comb, and simply laughs about it? Incredible.) read more

Down at Lulu's is everything a salon should be: talented stylists, great music, and tons of eye candy! I always go to Seth and I never leave disappointed. He's so good! I've had a lot of stylists at other salons that I have gotten great haircuts from and then returned to with bad results. Seth is very consistent and he doesn't need much direction. The shop itself is a fabulous gaudy pink rock n' roll dream with creepy kittens, faux gold baroque shelves, and heart shaped mirrors. How could you not love this place? Go there! read more

This review is strictly for the shopping portion of the store. I thought the idea of a salon/vintage clothing shop was pretty unique in itself so of course I had to check it out. It's hard to miss this place since it's pretty damn pink (but not in the Pepto Bismal kind of way). The place was cool, pretty decent selection of vintage items, it was just a little small. I was hoping to look through some more but there wasn't a lot of racks. The vintage boots and belts section was awesome though most of the boots were tiny sizes. Finally a place that does cool hair right! After trying all the hip and pricey salons in Berkeley, Oakland, and much of SF, thank God for Lulu's! Lots more hip, not as much pricey. I've had my hair done by Mitra, Tina and Seth and loved all three in different ways. Tina's got the most edge, Mitra is very precise and will give you a long-lasting cut, and for me, Seth is the best of both worlds. I'm not so into vintage so I can't comment on the shopping, but I love the folks, the tunes, and the decor they have collected for this place is priceless! read more
