We ordered a show jacket and had it shipped to the store. When our daughter went to the store, she spent a LOT of money on boots, helmets, shirts, etc. The jacket didn't fit, so she returned it. The store ordered another one to be delivered to our home. It was also returned. Now we're weeks and way too many phone calls with Dover into our so far futile attempts to get a refund. Really love going to this location! Got a lot of my riding clothes from here; even got all my show clothes here a few years ago. Friendly and helpful staff, lots of great items and brands. This place might be good for people who know A lot about horse stuff, but for someone who has questions or needs help they are not very good! I went in there and was very frustrated that my sales women was very abrupt and kept disappearing. I had a question and was told that's what we have without any helpful ideas of how to get what I need. I will not be going back there!!!!! I felt she was very rude! And on the 8th day he said: "We should totally get a Dover in here." And it was good. Dover Saddlery was but a trusted catalog and far off east coast dream to me for so long. Now, at long last, it is within (driving) reach. Gone are the days of return shipping, and wishing you could see the items before you buy them. The store is neat as a pin, and well stocked with everything from sponges to lunges, and all the (english) tack you could dream of. This passed weekend was the grand opening, so things were a tad nutty in there....but there is no fault. Horsepeople from far and wide just had to come and see for themselves the glory that is Dover. Live and in person. Also, they were giving away prizes, and horse people will drive for hours for free stuff. Nevermind that the gas cost 100x the value of said free stuff. The prices are fair market value--no insane deals here, but again: To have quality tack available in this quantity is new and exciting. read more

There is a nice selection, courteous employees and decent prices to be had here. That said, the employees are not necessarily all experts. I've had my daughter incorrectly sized for half chaps (waaaay too short-- any person selling hunter/jumper apparel should have been embarrassed with the mistake) and almost had my younger daughter sold a helmet that didn't fit correctly but for her older sister being present and insisting on trying more and finding a better fit). When I called to explain the error the clerk made in regards to the half chaps I was told I could return them for store credit. I live in Milwaukee, so that wasn't terribly helpful or convenient. I have never been treated rudely, but I've never had anyone go above and beyond to help us either. I look at visiting Dover as entering the wilds and know that I need an expert equestrian with me to navigate and find what I need. Sometimes that's fine, but sometimes it's not, depending on what we are looking for, and in those cases I'd drive farther for the expertise other stores offer. read more

Love this store !! Originally found Dover online shopping and was so happy to find one in the area . We drive almost 50 min to get to this one, but it's totally worth it . Clothes are laid out nicely and they have a great selection of just about everything an English rider could need . Would definitely recommend !! read more

The shop has everything a rider would need. Too bad some of the sales people are super bitchy and treat people as if they're stupid. It's kind of a crapshoot: sometimes they're nice and helpful, but if you are a novice they treat you like you're an idiot. I will head to saddlers Row from now on. read more

I came in the other day with a very specific request--gear to help me manage a heat related health issue and boy...did Anne and the ladies here go above and beyond. She even set me up to return my purchase from my home in northern Wisconsin should It not work out! What customer service. Courteous, knowledagble, and most of all personable. When I was a kid, for athletics I mostly played soccer. A couple times a year I needed new shin guards or shoes, and since my brother played, sometimes these were hand-me-downs. My wife did not play soccer: she trained and showed through level 2 in dressage competitions. She had custom boots made in 1999 to the tune of $600, and recently started riding again, only to find that she needs slightly bigger boots, so we headed to Dover Saddlery (the last time she was here it was Libertyville Saddle Shop). As someone largely unfamiliar with the riding scene, my father-in-law told me that I was in for a special experience. Certainly the level of equipment and merchandising was different from what I experience in NAYSO. Rarely, except when I go to Vogue fabrics in Evanston, do I enter place with so much specialized gear that I have no idea what to do with. I never considered it, but of course just as there are dog treats, there are whole ranges of horse cookies, horse muesli, and other horse treats, some of which looked pretty tasty. For horses. It's also a very fancy/shiny store, with loads of merchandise laid out in neat rows and on display. There's clothing for riders, clothing for horses boots, saddles, blankets bits, feed additives, toys, and on and on. I'm pretty new to this, so I don't really know the market , but I guess Dover is like a Saddlery Super Store. A salesperson came by to offer us assistance within a minute of walking in the door, and my wife asked for help trying on boots. She was very helpful, measured and suggested different options, then patiently walked my wife through various different sizes and configurations. My wife was concerned that she had difficultly-sized legs, but so far as I can tell, every woman that comes in there feels she has difficultly-sized legs. Another woman in the same section was griping that her feet are child sized, but her calves are adult-sized, making boot buying hard. I don't think they really sell any of the regularly-sized boots, they're just there as examples, so people can come close to figure out what they need. Anyway, everyone's different, but the salespeople were very understanding of these differences. My wife didn't find quite what she wanted, but the salesperson suggested one she thought would be a good fit. Fingers-crossed that it is, but I'm sure Dover Saddlery will help her figure it out. read more

After measuring my calf, ankle to knee height n shoe size, Marilyn spend over 45 minutes with me to be sure that the fit was the best possible. I have been shopping at Dover Saddlery on line and when the retail store in Libertyville opened up I was ecstatic! Service is exemplary, stock is top notch. I had a problem with Konig dressage boot sizing and I returned three pairs (measured perfectly by the way) until we found the right ones. Deanna, Anne, Dawn, Maureen and there rest of the staff are fantastic. Have always been more than helpful finding me what I needed/wanted, etc. I brought in a Weatherbeeta TAKA winter blanket with defective buckles that I had for several years and rather than repair it (which was what I had planned) I was provided with a NEW Weatherbeeta similarly priced, heavy winter blanket. The store is attractive, well-stocked and seems to have a bit higher quality stock than LIbertyville Saddle Shop had, but it's got a snooty feel that I don't like. I walked into the store and there were 3 or 4 salespeople: one was helping another person, but the others completely ignored me and said not one word to me as I walked around the store. I would have considered buying something, but I felt like the chick in "Pretty Woman" when she first walked into the store and was snubbed by the snotty sales ladies. UPDATE: My updated review has been long overdue! Over the last few years I have been to Dover every month sometimes several times a month. I love walking in and being greeted with friendly smiles. Everyone is well versed and knowledgeable. They are always willing to help and go the extra mile in making sure you have what you need. It's customer service excellence! This is hard to achieve in a larger store but they have done it! Dovers product selection is wide and varied across all categories. It is amazing how much they have to address even the most specialized needs. I have needed something very particular several times and Dover had the items! If they don't have the item in stock they can look for it through their amazing and beautiful catalog or in their corporate inventory. When I was in college, I loved going to the Dover in Chantilly, VA (half an hour away from me), so I'm very happy there's a Dover in northern Illinois too! I had actually never been to this one until this past winter, when I went to buy some thermal tall boots. It was a very quick, easy, and efficient shopping experience; I knew exactly which ones I wanted, had emailed previously to inquire about them, and the manager set them aside for me since they only had one more pair in my size. When I went in later that evening, I tried them on, they fit great, and I bought them (they were on sale, at great price too). Love this place! read more
