On October 12, 2026, I arrived in severe dental pain after visiting the Saint Francis emergency room that morning. After an examination and X-rays, I was told I needed a root canal and paid $1,445 believing treatment would proceed. Instead, I waited for hours, only to be told the dentist was not comfortable performing the procedure. I respect a dentist's right to decline treatment they are uncomfortable providing, but I should have been informed much sooner so I could seek care elsewhere. I also received conflicting information about my insurance benefits and was deeply disappointed by how my questions and demeanor were addressed. As a Black woman, I left feeling belittled and dismissed, and concerned about whether I had been treated with the same respect as other patients. I left crying, still in pain, without the treatment I came for. At checkout, I was told a refund had already been discussed, and I am seeking a clear accounting of my payment and an appropriate refund for services not rendered. Mistakes happen because we're human, but how a business acknowledges and resolves its mistakes says far more about its integrity than the mistake itself. My current dentist recommended 2 crowns priced at $1,000. I doubted his capability so I saw Dr. Pettey today just for a consultation. He said he could do some fillings and that would take care of the loss of enamel issue right then. I was pleasantly surprised he could fit me in when I was just scheduled for a consult. I was in there maybe an hour from start to finish and my 2 front teeth look brand new. My cost less insurance was $116 instead of what I could have paid ($1,000). You can't even see where the enamel loss was. As a result, I am switching to Dr. Pettey as my new dentist for me and my husband. Owning his own practice totally makes a difference in the care you are given. He and Johnna did an amazing job and I am so pleased with the outcome! Highly, highly recommend. She was very rude, snappy, and unprofessional. At that point, I canceled my appointment and immediately found another dentist.
