TLDR: Best BBQ in Napa, hands down. Brisket and burnt ends…read moreare killer, mac n cheese surprised me, the owners are absolute gems, and the space is gorgeous. Cornbread and sauces missed the mark for me, but the meat more than made up for it. Definitely going back! The full story: Finally! A BBQ joint that knows how to season meat! Stateline Road Smokehouse in Napa is the spot. We rolled in on Mother's Day and got hit with a line almost out the door -- always a good sign! Turned out the wait wasn't bad though, because they've got a slick assembly line going. I watched the girl slicing my brisket right next to the order-taker, then just followed my tray as it moved down the line. The space is gorgeous -- big, bright, and airy, with clear garage doors and windows across the front and a domed ceiling overhead. We ordered the brisket, burnt ends, BBQ chicken, mac n cheese, and hot water cornbread. Plates come with their house-made pickles, onions, and peppers. They even have stuff for non-carnivores -- the Cherry Wood-smoked Maitake & Greens (maitake mushrooms, lettuce, heirloom rice, marinated garbanzo beans, lemon vinaigrette) and the 18th & Vine Grain Bowl (barley, quinoa, sweet potato, arugula, parsnip, saffron egg, pickled onion, burnt orange vinaigrette) both looked fantastic. Maybe I'll grab one next time -- right next to a pile of brisket! On the drink side they've got wines by the glass, boozy slushies, draft beer, and batch cocktails. We stuck with water this round. Prices were a notch above what I'm used to in Sacramento, but for Napa they felt totally fair -- especially since this is probably the best BBQ around. The brisket was a steal at $19 for a half pound. The chicken at the same price for a half bird felt a bit steep, but I could be off on what's normal up there. The brisket was seasoned beautifully from the very first bite -- smoked to perfection, fall-apart tender. No knife needed. The burnt ends were my favorite of the whole spread. They had a splash of sauce on them but it wasn't needed -- those rubs hold their own. The BBQ chicken had a totally different vibe -- hard to describe, but it gave off Asian-influenced flavors. Solid on its own, but pairing it with the brisket and burnt ends was a misfire. The flavors just didn't play nice together. The mac n cheese was great. It wasn't baked, but it also wasn't mushy or overcooked like most places -- the noodles still had bite and the cheese was flavorful. Sadly, the cornbread was the weak link. A little dry, kinda bland, and not as thick as I like. About the size of a thin 6" pancake -- not really worth the price. The other miss for me was the BBQ sauces. Just not my thing flavor-wise. To be fair though, the owner built his whole business on those sauces and apparently ships them out by the pallet, so plenty of people clearly love them! It was awesome seeing Darryl Bell, the owner, back in the kitchen working his magic -- and get this, he's reportedly the first Black restaurateur in Napa since the 1800s! That made the warm welcome hit even harder. Even with the rush going on, he popped out to snap a picture with us and thank us for coming in. His business partner Jeremy was also working the floor, checking in on every table, and he stuck around to talk us up about Darryl's BBQ skills and how their partnership came together. Then during a lull, Darryl came back out and gave us the whole tour -- the cultural and historical design choices throughout the space (the building used to be a Quonset hut, which explains that cool domed ceiling) plus the murals on the back patio. Dinner AND a show! Wishing these guys all the best. Can't wait to get back and work through more of the menu.

Everything we ordered was incredibly dry. It appeared that it had been left on the grill for an…read moreextended period, resulting in a dark, charred, and parched texture. The cornbread was a complete disappointment. The hamachi, however, was a refreshing exception, as it seemed freshly grilled. The moment I pierced the ribs with my knife, I knew they were dry. Despite my hunger from the wine tasting, the experience was so disappointing that we had to rush to another establishment to relieve my disappointment. On a positive note, the servers were incredibly friendly and warm.

a must try for breakfast when in Napa! Wow!…read more The location is very convenient. Large parking lot (it actually is in the same parking lot as a beautiful movie theater). You walk in, order, pay, grab a number and they will bring it out to your table. We had the chilaquiles and the cornmeal pancake (both gluten free). I also ordered one tostada (you can order 1 or 2, but I wasn't too hungry). The pancake was out of this world! It was on the sweeter side but we loved it. The pork in the chilaquiles was amazing and so tasty! Highly recommend full coffee bar! (no sugar free syrups available) I do wish they upgraded their tea service. They basically give you a cup of water with one tea bag, and we had to go and ask for extra water a couple of times.

South Yard has a lot of TVs and is open early so you can watch your east coast games! 2. While the restaurant is outside, they have heaters and fire pits throughout the space for chilly weather or evenings. Dress accordingly! 3. Large game area with cornhole, air hockey, and funky play-centric furniture that makes it friendly for kids and adults alike. 4. You order via the QR code on your table and then the staff deliver your drinks, food, etc. They have a condiment table with tons of sauces and toppings for your food. The ordering process can be a little wonky (slow, and they ended up having a bunch of receipts for my table and I had to do multiple transactions when closing out) so be patient. 5. They have bottomless mimosas and you mix your own - so you can get your preferred proportion of wine and juice. They also have a Bloody Mary bar. 6. I have a guilty pleasure for cheap light beers and they had Coors Light for $2 on Sunday. They also offer craft beer on tap/bottle/can and cocktails. 7. I had a delicious Lola Farms sausage sandwich with housemade chips. Very good. I also had pretzel bites - the pretzels were good, but, the sauce was some type of beer cheese dip. It wasn't that great - too tangy! Next time I'll try a burger or breakfast sandwich. They looked really good. 8. The staff are extremely friendly and gracious. I was checked in on by servers regularly (but not in an annoying way) and they all chatted with me and made me (as a solo diner who loves her football) feel very welcome. Marriott management also checked in, which was nice. Pro-tip: Get there early to get the game of your choice and a good table! I will surely be back!

The restaurant is small, with a handful of tables inside and a few out front, but it has a rustic, comfortable feel. The employees were especially welcoming. They chatted with us, asked where we were from, and even wanted to know if we had a favorite BBQ place back home. While talking with them, I got the sense that they put a lot of thought into their food. They had three distinct sauces, and everything felt genuine rather than forced. I had heard about Alabama white BBQ sauce before but had never tried it, so ordering the Bama Chicken Sandwich was an easy decision. My partner got the ribs, and we shared a side of potato salad. The Bama Chicken Sandwich was a hit with both of us. The ribs were also excellent: tender, moist, and full of flavor. I've had a lot of BBQ over the years, and this was definitely some of the best. Great food, friendly people, and a place I'd happily return to.

Please heed my warning (and those of the other most recent reviews!) and save yourself the time,…read moremoney, effort, and stress - hire literally ANY other caterer for your event. After months of poor communication and several displays of unprofessionalism, I tried to cancel our contract 6 weeks prior to our wedding date. I was in a dispute with the owner (Gabe) to try and get a refund for an event he hadn't even catered, and he refused to provide it. Note that the owner himself has stated that he thinks his business is headed to an end. See attached photo for text messages I received from him with this claim. If anything, you don't want to work with someone who cannot maintain a professional demeanor in their client correspondence. In case you need further convincing to NOT hire Ring of Fire, feel free to read through my ordeal below. --- In February of this year, I reached out in search of a wedding caterer. Gabe invited me and my partner to a complimentary tasting with other couples who were interested in booking. The tasting went great (the ONLY thing that went well in all my interactions with them) so we booked and paid a 50% deposit. Over the next few months I reached out to get deadlines and feedback on our proposed menu. After repeated attempts to contact him, the only time he really reached out was to offer a discount on our balance if we paid it early. In hindsight, this should have been a *red flag* - no professional would ever reach out to a client to ask them to pay something in advance of the contract terms unless they were poorly managing their business and finances. Instead, thinking it was gesture of customer service, we went ahead and paid our balance early to get the discount. However, after paying, Gabe unprofessionally asked us to reschedule our already confirmed site tour in favor of booking another lunch. My wedding coordinator and I agreed to reschedule, only to have him NO SHOW for the site tour. 15 minutes after the confirmed meeting time I called Gabe to get his ETA. He didn't seem to know where our venue was (even though he accepted a calendar event with the date, time, and address in it) and told me was still 50 minutes away so we proceeded without him. Had we waited, he would have been OVER AN HOUR LATE. At this point, I lost faith that ROF could cater my event. We were still 6 weeks away from our date so I requested to cancel our contract and get back the balance payment (that HE requested we pay early). Needless to say, he did not want to grant the refund. I worked with an attorney and determined the best course of action was to file a dispute with the credit card company AND to sue him in small claims court as backup. Luckily, the credit card company resolved the dispute in my favor but I still experienced an extreme amount of stress trying to book a new caterer with less than 6 weeks from my wedding date - something I would never wish on any bride. Again, please save yourself the stress and look elsewhere for your caterer.

We hired Gabe & Ring of Fire in 2019 for our June 2020 wedding. We had come by to do a tasting and…read morehe had a huge spread ready for us and another couple. All of the food was delicious (and the artichoke dip is still my favorite thing ever). We were given the option to pay in full upfront so we did.  When Covid hit, Gabe was very understanding and accommodating about moving the date, which we did twice. We finally celebrated in June 2022, and unfortunately the team was dealing with some key staff out for Covid.  We were super happy with Gabe until pretty much the day of the wedding itself. He had previously said he was going to come by in the morning for setup but never showed up or answered our message asking if he was still coming. We were also supposed to have the big truck showcased on the property and they arrived with the smaller truck. Come to find out the big truck had been inoperable and they couldn't fix it that morning. When the staff started arriving, the first thing they tell me is how they're short staffed and needed to move their crew around, service might be slower, etc. This felt unprofessional especially since it all ended up being fine. We paid for 120 head count and only had about 90 ppl show up, so we told them to leave leftovers. I'm not sure what happened but we had zero leftovers, even though Gabe was saying we'd have a bunch. They also didn't serve coffee in the evening though we had paid for it. Overall we've gotten so much positive feedback on the food and bar, the crew was great, but the unprofessionalism in the final moments really left a sour taste in my mouth. I'm sure some of this had to do with the fact that we paid in 2019 and that doesn't feel fair given that it was an option he offered to us.
