Took me a few business days to write this review, because the situation with Dr. Park was very stressful. While we've had positive experiences with Dr. Park in the past, in our most recent visit he was in an agitated state almost immediately. He was highly frustrated with my child, who was scared, and did not offer the reassurances I would have expected from a pediatric dentist. Instead, his behavior escalated what was otherwise a manageable level of discomfort. When pressed about his failure to deescalate, he became further agitated, and began arguing with me directly. It was all very unexpected and caused us a significant level of anxiety. Kudos to his staff, who helped us to leave quickly and with the paperwork we needed to seek care elsewhere. Of Dr. Park, I will say, make sure you catch him on a good day otherwise you may need to help regulate not just your child's emotions but also their dentist's. read more

My kiddo is complicated. She had a liver transplant at 7 mos old and was on tons of meds for the first 2 years of her life. Also, unfortunately, you form your teeth at ~4 mos old, which is when she had very high bilirubin. It resulted in stained and brittle teeth. Because of her medical history, we made the trek to OHSU for dental care in the past. Until we decided to look closer to home. Honestly, the team is awesome and we have full confidence in their care. They speak with my daughter's transplant team to ensure we're on the same page. Unfortunately, despite excess dental care, she has already needed fillings and an adult molar extraction, but she does phenomenally well with Doug's care. She would scream so much at OHSU that she'd work herself up until she puked. It was a nightmare. Not one peep while she's at this office! The decor/theme in the office is also awesome. It probably makes it easier for kids to want to come here. read more

We went in to Douglass Park dental to have my sons tooth removed due to an injury. The front desk receptionists were great and friendly. Dr. Park and his assistant were kind, patient, and were great at communicating what was happening during each step. They made my son feel comfortable. I've probably already written one review regarding this pediatric dentist, but I'm inclined to do another. They are fabulous. From the front desk staff to the doctor himself, there is nothing lacking. They are kind, compassionate, patient, and also get the job done. I have no doubt some parents are thrown by getting asked to not accompany their children to the exam room. Do not be alarmed. If they need you, they will come and get you. Cute little office supplied with children's books, toys and more. Staff was very friendly, BUT... the dentist was the most impatient person I've ever met. My child hasn't had the best experience with Dentists, soOOOo I figured If I go to a Pediatric dentist.... maybe this visit would help my child's fear of dentists. I was wrong. Once the dentist started prodding around in my child's mouth, my child started to whine, fearing the pain. I explained to the dentist of my child's experience with another dentist and told him that my child has great fear of pain. I thought he understood, but once my child started to whine again , his patience was gone, and he told my child that he will not have any child crying in his office. He was was very scolding and blunt. It was a VERY uncomfortable situation. I was so relieved when it was over. No second appointment was made. STAY FAR FAR AWAY FROM DR. PARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My son still has something negative to say about this dentist when we happen to drive by his office. (He was only five when we were referred to this office and it was a nightmare.) We never bring him up... ( OUR SON DOES.. EVERY TIME WE GO BY AND HE IS 10 NOW!). This guy scarred our son AND US. He was impatient, curt and snapped at my son who was left lying in a chair with a CRAZY AMOUNT of clamps and things pinching his mouth and cheeks. He was told (snapped at) to basically suck it up. *** ( Updated 2015 ) After reading recent "1 star" reviews on Dr. Parks... and seeing Dr. Parks' responses - I can only conclude that this person is NOT being honest with himself. Had been seeing Dr.Park for about two years and I had always sort of overlooked his attitude of impatience with my daughter who is now 10. I don't know why. Last week, we went in to get a tooth looked at for possible problems. She was only back there for a few minutes when I heard a man yelling "What's with the attitude ?!" I was immediately summoned by the hygienist and went back. He was obviously angry and said she had been disrespectful. I questioned her and she confirmed. I spoke with her about respectfulness to adults, all the while in shock, realizing that he had been yelling at her. Apparently she had said "yes" in a disrespectful tone. ( this is not like her, she is a wallflower.) We got through it and he regained his composure, and we left a few minutes later. Upon walking out of the office, she fell apart crying. She said she didn't understand the question he had been asking and he just kept repeating it so she finally just said "yes" and it came out wrong. Wether or not she was in the wrong ( let's just assume she was) how can his behavior be acceptable to anyone, let alone the staff? Is it EVER ok to yell at a patient? Is it ever ok to yell at someone else's child? I say run. Run the other direction. Never again will I ignore my gut where my children are concerned. read more

This was our first visit to the dentist. I came in with my daughter, who is 3 y.o. I was very scared to go and do anything with her teeth, because I knew that she would not sit still through anything, let alone somebody digging in her mouth. I was very concerned with how he was going to take care of the pain factor during the procedure. When I asked about it, he said that he was going to use sadative medication "versed", which should help her relax, but it definately would not "knock her out". When I asked how we're going to deal with it, he said that if a child broke an arm and it needed to be straightened, we would do what needs to be done and not be concerned about the pain; he said that he could strap her down to a chair (!!!!) to control her moving, or I could help hold her down. I said that I would try to hold her myself. When we came in the second time, we were even able to get the X-Rays taken with no problem (the first time she refused to open her mouth). The doctor and the assistants gave her little prizes (ring, lip balm) for being cooperative. Before he started with the drill, as she was laying down in her chair, he got over her face and proceeded to tell her that "we can do it the nice way" or the "not so nice" way, where we'll need to strap you down to a chair, if you do not want to stay still. My daughter does not speak english, so I told that doctor "you do realise that she does not speak english". I did not interpret what he said to my daughter. As soon as he started putting the dressing around her tooth, she started screaming and trying to get out of the chair. He put the clamp in her mouth, to stop her from closing it, but she knocked it out once, he forced her mouth open and put it back in. I was trying to hold her hands from taking down the dressing and the legs from kicking. The doctor was trying to hold her head w/ one hand while drilling with another. She was screaming at the top of her lungs the whole time. Her eyes, face, neck were red. She had the look of terror on her face. As she starts to loose her voice because of the screaming, she's still franticly moving her head and trying to get out (at 3 y.o. there's not much realization, that sometimes it hurts before it gets better - most of us understand this). By this time I was loosing my strength and I could not even hold her any more. From the begining of the procedure and throughout, I was trying to calm her down, by telling her that I was going to get her something if she behaves. When talking in a calm voice didn't help, I tried talking to her in a firm voice, telling her that she needs to stop screaming, so that we can just get it done and go home. As I am loosing all of my physical and moral strength - the doctor, in a very irritated and angry voice, yells at her and tells her to stop screaming, or something of this nature. At this moment I can not even recollect what exactly his words were, but the voice was very irritated and angry. I myself got scared and for a second didn't know how to react to something like this. Then, I said "Don't do that again!". He stopped for a second and said that he's doing his job and that I should not interfere. I told him that while he's a dentist, I am her mom, and I know better what is going calm her down and what isn't, and that yelling at her, when she's terrified already was not helping!". He said that if I wasn't OK with his work then he can not continue. I said that I am not against how he is fixing her teeth, but against him yelling at her, so if he can not fix her teeth without yelling, then I guess we can not continue. Then he was telling me that he's a PEDIATRIC DENTIST and has got the experience and he knows how to work with kids. Which, you know, I never questioned his dentistry experience but rather the communication skills and the patience which apparently he lacks (big time). I understand that working with a child that's scraming and trying to get out of the chair is hard and it might have been emotionally too much for the doctor, but in that case he should've said something like "I'm sorry, but unless you can do something to calm her down we can not continue. If you're ok I can try raising my voice at her, to see if she's going to calm down when somebody else talks to her in a firm voice". At least I would've had the choice (I would've said not to continue, and went on to look for some other dentist who can put her to sleep, to fix the teeth). All in all, my experience has been so horrific that I still can't get over it. I will never go back. read more

Dr. Park has been my son's dentist for over ten years. My son is mentally handicapped and is very challenging to provide dental care for. Dr. Park and his staff have always been patient and kind. They do whatever it takes to create a stress free and enjoyable visit. Dr. Park is so personable and down-to-earth. Recently our son had to have some extensive work done on his teeth. Because of his condition, this meant day surgery at the hospital. Dr. Park met with us beforehand to explain what the procedure would be like, and then afterwards sat with us to explain how everything had gone--taking much more time than we would have expected him to spare. He never seems rushed, and is so tender with our son. Incidentally, our son is now 28-- well past the age that Dr. Park would need to provide dental care. With as challenging a job it is to care for our son's special needs, I would not have been offended if Dr. Park had sent us on to a non-pediatric dentist years ago. But year after year, Dr. Park is willing to go the extra mile because he truly cares about his patients and their families. I am sure it is no surprise that people that take the time to put a review online are usually those that are negative. This is unfortunate, because online reviews generally tend to rack up complaints--instead of recognizing the hundreds and hundreds of happy patients over the years. read more

Our three boys absolutely love going to see Dr. Park and his staff. Our children are 11, 6, and 5 and are always excited about going to see the dentist. Yes, I know it sounds crazy, but it really is true. This morning our 5 year old was watching a program and in the story a child was afraid of the dentist. He searched me out to tell me that he isn't afraid of his dentist. "I'm not afraid of my dentist. He fixes my toofs and makes me feel better! Yeah, I likeded him and he puts stuff on my two small teef up here but I can still eat stuff. I like that part!" Our 6 year old had a not so great experience at another office in Gresham where he ended up in tears. We tried Dr. Park's office and our son has been smiling after his appointments ever since. Our family can't say enough about the great care our children receive but also the staff in administration are always kind and considerate! Dr. Park has been a godsend for our family! We have a special needs daughter who has a severe oral aversion. It is difficult for her to let anyone touch her mouth, but over the last couple of years that we have seen Dr. Park, he has gently increased her tolerance! She now brushes her teeth every day (without forcing her) and she will let him gently examine her teeth WITH TOOLS! This is truly amazing for her! He has also done a fantastic job with my typically developing daughter. His office has toys and movies for the kids, which helps distract them from the fact that they are at the dentist. :) Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Park! read more

I must agree all the way. He is the worst dentist you could take your child to. I am going to Be filling a very large complaint on Dentist Park he has no write taking care of children, he has no patience. In fact he hurt my son by pinching his lip to his bottom teeth and telling him to hold still and than when my son turned his head he pinched his cheeks real hard, both times my son screamed out in pain, and he was not liking the fact that I told him never to touch my son like that again he got very angry at me. I will not be taking my son back to him and I hope that no one will trust this man to work on there child. If only I would have read the review about him before I went I would never have taken my son. Now my son is petrified to go to the dentist. read more

I took my daughter to this dentist a few months back, and she is 4 years old. When I first walked in I was impressed, as the overall atmosphere and decor of the office was very kid friendly. The ladies at the front desk were welcoming, as well as the dental assistant. Then we met Dr. Park. Despite the preparations and books we read my daughter was fearful of the thought of someone looking at her teeth, so she did not sit still and began to cry. Now you would think that a PEDIATRIC dentist would have the care and compassion to help calm a crying child down. This was not so with Dr. Park. He was very belligerent with both my daughter and I. He yelled at my daughter to stop crying and things would go easy, if not he would have to send me out of the room and do things the hard way. Excuse me! Threatening a child that her mommy will be sent away if she doesn't stop crying. Great method? I think not! The assistant, who was very friendly, persuaded me to try leaving the room saying that it sometimes helps. I was out for about a minute and couldn't take it anymore, so I stepped back in. The dentist proceeded to yell at me to get out so that he could do his job. After the ordeal we left quickly and did not return. I strongly advise you to not see this doctor. The nicely decorated office, high tech equipment, and abundance of prizes are not worth the experience of creating fear in your child. read more

After reading some of these reviews, I decided I would leave one too. I don't know what others experiences have been like, and obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I can say for our family Dr Park has been fantastic. I first heard about him from my Mom who took my little sister to him. My sister had previously gone to another dentist in the area who thought it was okay to yell and scream at a scared little girl. When my Mom couldn't stay in the room because she was in tears (they had to strap her down at this other dentist office...which by the way is normal...a lot of dentsits will have to do that with some kids, but it's always a last resort..I know, my MIL is a dental hygienist), anyway, I stayed in the room with my sister until I noticed that dr jerk face was continuing to yell and scream at her. My gut told me this wasn't the right place...so I told the dentist to stop, and we quickly went somewhere else. That somewhere else was Dr Parks office. My Mom had told him of their experience and how terrified my sister was of dentists now. He was absolutely FANTASTIC with her. So much so, I swear my mother may have disowned me if I had picked any other dentist for my kids. LOL So, that is where we started going. Our kids LOVE him! And he has a very good sense of humor. He talks to the teeth while he's working on them, and he is very nice. My youngest daughter (and we believe my oldest too) has sensory processing disorder AND a speech disorder. Going to the dentist for kids like this, can be very terrifying. However, he did such a fantastic job that we will never go anywhere else! I have been taking my 4 children to Dr. Park since 2002. We visit twice a year for our cleanings and usually atleast another time or two for sealants etc. We have been so happy in fact when we moved from Gresham to Battle Ground we still drove all the way back to see Dr. Park(about a 45 minute drive one way). I did try one time to see a closer pediatric dentist in Vancouver but after one visit it was unanimous by all 4 of my kids they wanted to go back to Dr. Park! Anyway the staff is nice, extremly friendly and always smiling. My experience with Dr. Park has always been positive. He is friendly, smiles a lot and jokes around. The kids are happy and have never been fearful of their visits. Another thing that stands out to me is that the staff has just about always been the same over the course of 10 years. Which says a lot to me that they enjoy their job, place of employment and those around that they work with. I will continue to take my kids to Dr. Park. read more
