I had a great experience the first time I went here. So I scheduled my next haircut appointment with the same person. The day of i get a phone call that the hair dresser is out sick. I was offered an appointment with another stylist, which I didn't mind. I was NEVER informed that their stylist's are ranked by levels. Furthermore that if i wanted a proper style of hair i should have known to ask for a higher level experienced professional! I left w/one side shorter than the other, looking lime a toddler chopped my hair! It was uneven & got shorter bangs when i specifically asked her not to cut above the eyebrows. That was not the most outrageous thing. Upon my return to the salon to get this fixed, the manager implied i was trying to get a FREE haircut! That the option i had was to have the SAME PERSON THAT CHOPPED MY HAIR OFF DO IT! The brilliance of that logic! A LEVEL 4 nicer hair stylist offered her services as she was available. She did spend at considerable amount of time doing what she could fixing my hair. The cherry on top: THE STYLIST THAT CHOPPED MY HAIR NOR THE MANAGER APOLOGIZED. Im left with with these thoughts: was it that they were discriminating towards me? Or simple disregard for great customer service? NO I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOUGLAS J SALONS. read more

I was greeted by a clean and smiling staff that was able to get me in immediately. The man who did my hair was phenomenal! Josè knows what he is talking about! He asked me what I do and do not like about my hair and we went from there! The scalp massage at the beginning of the session allowed me to relax and was greatly appreciated. I enjoy learning while getting my hair done so he thoroughly explained what he was doing, the products he administered and so much more. The facility is clean and cool temperature-wise! This is great because it was so hot this week my hair became frizzy. I noticed I wanted some other things done( eyebrows and mustache wax) and he was able to fit me right in! They are so accommodating. He is humorous and professional to a T. 100% recommend asking for Josè C. As a curly-haired client, it is rather difficult to find a professional who can manage my curls and give me a rounded cut that is still bouncy and still have body, but he gave me exactly what I wanted. I will keep coming back when I am in the area, and am going to tell all of my friends as well. read more

2 months later and I am still struggling with the haircut that I got from one of the hair stylist here named Jose. I had medium length (to my bra line) hair when I came in, all I wanted was a trim. I wanted to cut off some of the dead ends. What I got was a butcher job, which would cause me future issues with my curls. I was told by staff when I called in that they had a stylist who was able to cut and knowledgeable with naturally curly hair. I wear glasses and for the hair trim I took them off. I didn't know and I couldn't see what he was doing from the mirror. But he was using these texturing shears that you don't use for curly hair. Now I have to deal with extra volume and for curly hair, that the curl hair has been disrupted there is no curl once so ever, my beautiful curls are absolutely gone. My hair has never lost it's curl, and has never been tangled. Now that is all it does. I have never had anyone use these on me before. It's always been a comb and scissors. I did go to another salon that is located on Wealthy in Grand Rapids, (that I will not name for their protection). But they are in the process of saving my hair, but they did let me know that it may take over a year to get my hair one length as it was before. So now I have to recover from those texturing shears the length of all my hair to even out since he used them. They also told me that you don't use those on curly hair that is curly hair 101. So now it is going to take my hair a long time to recover from this butcher cut that I got from here. And the dinky amount of $ 85.00 I was refunded isn't going to right this mistake. After the cut was done, he showed me the haircut, I was not happy, it was crocked. It was literally going at an angle on my back. He told me to come back to get it fixed in a couple of weeks, that is when my stomach was in knots and I knew that I shouldn't have came here. I work at a CU and after talking to many people with curly hair about my experience. They told me I should write this review and that I should warn people about my experience. Anyone with curly understands how long a mistake takes to grow out. I really regret coming here, I wish I would have asked him what he was going to use to cut my hair. I didn't know I would have to ask someone that who allegedly knows how to cut curly hair. ***********If you have curly hair, please do not come here for a haircut. I am still recovering as I will have to get my hair cut multiple times, what makes me upset about the whole thing is that I told him that I didn't want volume and that it what he did. I really would have respected the sylist if he would have just told me that he did not want to cut my hair, or he didn't know how to cut my hair, instead of ruining it. I do forgive him, but I will never go here again. I was cordial with him when he showed me my warped hair cut, but I was really upset. *************As a disclosure this salon did reimburse me for their mistake. The manager answered my call, hear me out and then reimbursed me right away. ************** It doesn't make me happy to write this honest review, I would have loved to have had a great experience, but that was not the case. read more

SO very disappointed. I told them at booking and upon arrival that I had older gift cards. 157.00 in 2 gift cards. They would not give me a dime of this amount. I told them I had been very sick. Most stylists do not understand the cut I've been trying to get for my curly/ frizzy hair, and make it not look like a poofy mushroom Jen really listened and took time to talk to me about my hairs needs, and the cut! I flew into town, home from NYC for Christmas, and I didnt have enough time to get a haircut before I left. My stylist was Sam, who was very friendly and did a wonderful job! I had pictures from the last time I got it cut on my phone (because I really liked the way I had it cut when I was in Portland, OR), and I showed those to her, she asked me a few questions, and went to town. I was told over the phone that men's cuts started at $25, but in the end it was only $24 bucks. (I know, not a huge difference, but when they said it STARTED at $25 I expected to walk out having paid 30, which I did anyway because I tipped the difference from what I expected vs. what I actually paid). I would totally recommend going back there, and their spa treatments seemed to be pretty reasonably priced for the amount of time they give you for the money you spend. read more

I was working when i heard about them, a few of the girls came into my job and where eating and then sold me a package deal. They have really great package Deals, but they only do a limited amount for a short amount of time. I got a Facial From Emily and she was amazing, it was my first facial and she made me feel very comfortable. I also got my hair cut and styled from Nikki, she was very friendly and did great work on my hair cut. And trust me to let someone new cut my hair was a big thing. I usually only go to one stylist that i've been going to for years, but let me say i was very impressed with Nikki's work. They aren't extremely expensive i don't think. A 30 min. facial costs $30. which if you ask me sounds pretty good. I really do Recommend going there. They are amazing and very friendly. read more

My daughter went here for a trial up do and makeup for before her wedding. The up do fell out in 1 hour, the pins were falling out immediately after she left. She went back for a scheduled makeup trial and they didn't have mascara! They didn't use lip liner either. The eyes and lips are the most important for a bride, for the pictures!! I (MOB) had a trial style also, with an obviously new stylist. She struggled, left a part in the back of my hair, and it was flat . I requested the best hairspray, that they would use for day of wedding. No such thing there. Also the stylist I was scheduled to have quit and so did the one my daughter was to have her up do with. 2 stylists have quit in the past 2 weeks!! Beware!! Needless to say. We will NOT be using them for the wedding party hair! read more

Absolutely love this salon! I had my hair cut/styled today with Phillip M. and he took great care of my curly hair. He REALLY knows how to cut and style curly hair better than anyone I've been able to find in the area. He also takes time to teach you about the best products and care procedure for your specific type of hair. He and his staff also take an interest in you as a person which is different from other more snooty high end salons. If you want to go somewhere where you know your hair will be done well go to Phillip and tell them I sent you. ;) read more

I went in for a pedicure. My tech was very nice and the salon was clean however it was not worth the $45 pedicure price. She was rough on my feet, I had to tell her that what she was doing hurt me. My polish came out streaky and I was escorted out before my toes were dry and was told to be careful walking out to the car so they don't smudge. I'll add that there was no one waiting for a pedicure so I could have sat there the 10 minutes it would have taken to let my nails dry. Again, the salon was clean and the people were friendly but I won't go back for nail service. I've had a better pedicure for less money at several other salons in town. read more

I have been going to Phillip Michael since they have opened. The salon staff has always been very friendly and helpful and any recommendations they have made have been spot on! I take my kids all under age 15 there as well. I have gone to other salons and have been charged considerably more. Phillip has done a great job! Please beware when going to this salon. I walked in to get more information from the salon and the next day got my hair done...such a big mistake. I loved the atmosphere of the salon however the girl who cut and colored my hair was terrible! She was really nice however I now know she was uneducated on proper hair coloring and styling (I believe her name was Amber). I wanted a platinum blond look with a darker color underneath. I showed pictures and everything. I ended up with orangish hair with black underneath :( It was so sad! I am generally a passive person so I paid and thought maybe I just have to get use to it. Then my husband and friends saw me and told me that there is NO WAY they should have made me pay for the service. The color and style just terrible. I tried calling salon twice and left messages with receptionist for owner to please call me back. Every time I called I got the response that "Philip is a very busy with clients and will call me when he can"....well he never did. I then went to another hair salon and they took pictures of my hair three days after it was done because they wanted proof for me to show the owner of how my hair looked before they touched it. I have never intended to make a big deal out of the almost $200 I paid for my terrible haircut and style but I am planning on posting reviews wherever I can to educate people on my experience. I tell everyone to please not go to this salon...the coupons are not worth it. Worst hair experience for me ever! read more
