I was quoted $200 for a transmission fill and drain for my 2017 Toyota Corolla LE ECO. My wife and I dropped the car off at 10am. I got a call at 2pm from Chuck, he said that he did not know that the Toyota had a CVT transmission (they all come with CVT transmissions) and it would now cost me $387. Maybe he should have checked before giving me a quote. Very unprofessional to not honor the quote that I was given (since it was his mistake). My wife and I can't afford the $387. We wasted half of our day. I have since scheduled the service with a different mechanic and was quoted $200 for the same service. They have lost my business. read more

I need to start off by saying I don't know much about cars, and I don't have much interest in learning about them. SO, when it comes to car repairs, it is important that I go to someone I trust not to take advantage of me. We moved an hour away last December, and we still make the trip up to Douglas for our car repairs because they are THAT good. Their staff does a great job of explaining the cars' issues, the course of action and pricing to me, while speaking in a way that is not at all condescending. In the past, I have found that some mechanics can be condescending to women; especially those of us who aren't interested in car mechanisms. The waiting room is clean, comfortable and offers TV, bottled water, etc. for your wait. They also help arrange a nicely discounted car rental service if you need a loaner car. One of our cars is a Prius, and we have had a bad experience in the past with a mechanic who was not educated on hybrid maintenance. I know from a conversation with the owner, that the staff at Douglas is always learning the newest technology in diagnostics and repair. We trust them with our Prius AND our other car (a regular, old gas-guzzler). One final note: They have three locations too, which comes in handy. I can drop off my cars in Fox River Grove, Crystal Lake or Barrington, depending on where we are coming from/going that day. read more

My experience with Douglas Automotive was excellent. After having a nail in my tire, I feared the worst. They were able to get me into the shop on a Saturday, right away, without prior notice. I told Carl (the owner) I was planning to sell my car soon after getting the nail looked at. Not only did they remove the nail (happened to be a screw what was only a quarter-inch long and didn't puncture the tire enough to deflate anything), they also inspected my vehicle for any issues and confirmed that it was sound and ready to be sold. All of this for the cost of $0. That's right, they did it for FREE and even printed a vehicle detail summary for me. I had the guys at the FRG shop do some work on my 50 year old Datsun classic over the winter. They did a great job, it was nice to know there are still mechanics out there that know a thing or two about old cars. I did have one issue several weeks after I got the car back, the guys at the shop were happy to troubleshoot the issue & found out there was actually a bad batch of parts from the manufacturer. They made quick work of swapping out the parts. Glad to know that work on an old car even comes with a warranty! Now I can enjoy the summer drives once again with my classic! read more

It was making some noises when backing up. We dropped it off and within an hour of dropping it off Frank called me back told me the SUV needed brake pads. The quote was fair. We agreed to the repair. My parents had a car that they used very infrequently over the years. The car mostly sat, and when they used it, they had to "jump start" it to get it to run. This time, the jump-start didn't work. I was only in town one day, and needed quick service. I called Douglas Automotive (DA) in Chrystal Lake, and the gentleman who answered the phone was very polite and said he was busy for the day, but that I should try DA in Fox River Grove. I called the number, and the man who answered said, "Hi, this is Doug, how can I help you?" I explained to Doug my situation and time crunch. His Fox Lake shop was also busy, but he said to give him a few minutes and he would call me back to see if he could help. Within a short time (less than 5 minutes), he called back saying that he would have a tow truck come and take the car to his shop in Barrington. For the sake of brevity, the car was towed. I later received a call from Carl at Barrington. Carl told me what was the problem (basically, the car needed a new battery), as well as other issues they discovered upon their courtesy inspection of the vehicle. Given my time crunch, Carl advised me on what was mission critical, as well as what they could do within the day, to which I agreed. I was also quoted a price that was fair, based on my preliminary Internet research. I did not know if the tow was included in the price I was quoted, and anticipated that the actual cost might be higher. To my pleasant surprise, the price I was quoted did include the tow. When I arrived to pick up the car, Carl greeted me and was friendly and helpful. This was also a pleasant surprise, as I arrived at closing time on Saturday. Carl explained to me in clear terms what to expect while driving the car, given that certain maintenance was still needed (i.e. new brakes). I found this extremely valuable as I drove the car on the highway, and just as Carl said, I experienced some "pulsating" when applying the breaks at high speeds. Overall, I feel that the staff at Douglas Automotive, including the owner Doug, was very helpful in a time of urgency, without overcharging me, as I was leveraged due to time constraints. Today I brought my niece's car to Douglas Automotive in Fox River Grove for a repair related to the air conditioner. My experience from the phone call to schedule the appointment to the completion of the work was excellent. I originally went to the dealership in McHenry where the car was purchased and even scheduled an appointment there. Circumstances occurred that caused me to cancel that appointment and re-schedule with Douglas Automotive. I could not be more pleased that those circumstances "directed" me to Douglas in Fox River Grove. The facility is clean, met my needs, and the efforts put forth to make the wait time in the designated waiting area comfortable (beverages, TV etc.) were obvious and very much appreciated.
