They're lightly coated, fried to perfection, plump and juicy. The fried Fish and Fried Shrimp are also excellent. And don't overlook the BBQ - very good Eastern North Carolina style with just the right touch of vinegar. Got two dinners to go. Everything was really good! Chopped barbecue excellent as well as the fried flounder. All the sides were delicious -- collards, Brunswick stew, slaw, and yams. I saw this place like a year ago while i was driving through this small town and stop to tried it but it was close, so finally i had the chance to tried it and i was not disappointed, i like to try different places when comes to NC BBQ and this is one of the of the best places that i ever tried. Yep, this was excellent barbecue. Probably more "central" North Carolina pulled pork as they did have a vinegar sauce on the table but there was also a ketchup based. Right in the middle of lunch time, the place was busy but I had a spot at the counter with friendly service. I chose the pulled pork plate which comes with three sides so I stuck to my keto diet and had green beans, cole slaw and cabbage. Yep, it comes with hush puppies and I did have one. It was good. This is a destination because of the location and when you don't have much competition. On a business trip to Rocky Mount with a co-worker & this place was recommended for a Wednesday lunch. When you enter, you don't know if there is wait service and if you go to the window and order, we sat down and several staff looked at us like we were from another planet. Finally, I got up and asked someone and he said you go to the window and order which we did. We stood there for 5 minutes while a staff of about 5 people walked around ignoring us. Tried the pork BBQ with an assortment of sides - green beans, cole slaw, cabbage, black-eyed peas, brunswick stew. And hush puppies. The pulled pork is great. Smoked, tender & moist, served unsauced. The homemade BBQ sauce is vinegar-based (not my favorite) but still an excellent complement to enhance the smoky goodness of the pork. Cole slaw is ground, creamy and sweet. Ya gotta do the pork NC-style, with the slaw on top! Yum!! The sides make the meal at Doug Saul's. Green beans - fresh, seasoned and simmered all day, are outstanding. Brunswick stew, homemade of course, is a slightly sweet combo of tomatoes, butter beans, corn, okra, green beans and pork. Black-eyed peas firm and perfectly seasoned. Cabbage stewed till soft but still firm, sweet and buttery. The meal comes with a generous mound of hush puppies. Crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside, shaped like onion rings. Delicious! Wow, such a great meal. I got the BBQ plate that came with juicy, tender pulled pork and three sides. I chose cabbage, green beans, and yams. The cabbage was my favorite! Great flavor. The yams were sweetened, so not my favorite, but still really tasty. I highly recommend getting the BBQ and adding just a splash of the vinegar you'll find on the tables and maybe a dash of hot sauce. The hush puppies were another level of awesome! I've heard the can close randomly for events or holidays, but it's a mom and pop place what do you expect? Not to mention, it's hella cheap and the food is so good I don't know how they do it. They're all nice people, and make things right if something gets messed up and don't accept tips?! For example, a pulled pork plate at Martin's in Nashville is about $13. Here it's about $6 and they give you more food. Slam DUNK. I saw some review on here that said they don't offer real take out because you can't call in. Well, on the weekends the restaurant is packed so hell no they're not going to answer the phone. I tried once and completely understood why they were indeed open but not answering. Hadn't been to this old school Eastern NC BBQ restaurant in a number of years, but my recent visit there confirmed what I remembered about the food - it offers some of the very best Eastern BBQ, Fried Chicken, and Fried Seafood in the state. The BBQ is moist, tender, perfectly copped (NOT minced or PULLED), and with some really nice heat - you can see the red pepper flakes in the pork - cool, but not cool. This pork makes a great sandwich. Easily in my top 10. The Fried Chicken is almost as good as the pork - almost. The wings and thighs are awesome. The Fried Seafood (whatever they're serving) is right there as well. They have daily specials on these items, as well as other country cooking offerings. Pricing is very reasonable -BBQ Sandwich is $2.95; 8 pieces of Fried Chicken is $7.95, as is a pound of very good BBQ. Only downside is they do not have a hot dog on their menu. This guy that's my Dad's cousin's son lost his wife to an illness and we talked about it around a long table groaning with a catered Doug Saul's BBQ lunch. I lost my wife too and there isn't much to say except that it hurts like nothing I've ever felt in my life. Cole slaw in a bucket. Then green beans. Fried chicken. Pulled pork BBQ. Two bottles of vinegar sauce to soak everything. It was a good long table. We talked about shooting a mile. Meaning target shooting where the target is 1 mile away. I don't have the patience for target shooting like that. He showed me an app that calculates where the shot has to go once distance, wind speed, angle, and about 50 other variables are figured in. There's a fair bit of math involved apparently. Fair bit of math goes into making a Doug Saul catered lunch too, I bet. You send them the number of folks coming to the Ruritan Club, they show up with the right amount of buckets of food. The cole slaw was gloriously deep and hefty in its own bucket. I was mesmerized by the bright green of the cabbage. I was also mesmerized by a guy there who had worked for the railroad for over 30 years. That wasn't the mesmerizing part though. He had an actual pencil thin mustache. I couldn't stop humming that Jimmy Buffett song after meeting him. I can't get into the whole Eastern NC BBQ argument about vinegar based this and ketchup based that and only using the pork shoulder there and never here and only hickory and on and on. I just ain't that picky. Doug Saul's BBQ was warm and juicy and the vinegar based sauce was tart. I mean, Good Lord, honor the pig and stop all that fussing. Speaking of tart, Ginger made a banana pudding that lasted about 4 minutes. She made a meringue that she said she "beat like hell". Nobody makes meringue anymore that I know of. She lamented loudly that she had to use instant pudding instead of the regular. Ain't that all of our problem, nowadays? Always doing things instant and right the hell now. Maybe slow down a bit. Everybody has their druthers, but I'll take ole Doug's fried chicken. Crispy and with a dash of that vinegar sauce, it put a smile on my face that lasted most of the day. For my veggies I got slaw, Brunswick Stew, and Black Eyed Peas. The man that took our order was as nice as could be, and he may have even been the owner. The food came out very quickly. The Pork BBQ here is great eastern NC style BBQ. It is chopped, does not have a hint of fat, well sauced with vinegar and red pepper flakes. You honestly don't need to add any sauce. My only complaint is that I didn't get any smoky flavor. Believe it or not, I think that the stand out here is the Fried Chicken. It was well cooked and the white meat was of great quality. It was very juicy and lightly breaded so you got more of the flavor of the chicken. The slaw was very good with a good sweet flavor that paired well with the BBQ. The Black Eyed Peas were also good. I always like to add a little bit of sauce to mine. The Brunswick stew and the hushpuppies were the only disappointments. Doug Sauls is a great establishment. It has so much character and their are so many friendly faces all dedicated to pumping out good food. It is a ton of food for a great price. The pulled pork was good (no gristle, flavorful, moist), but not amazing (no smoky flavor and a little homogenous). The slaw was outstanding. I could take or leave the cabbage and the stew (bland).
