The hotel's layout blends indoor and outdoor spaces, so after checking in, we had to walk outside to reach our room. While the room felt a bit dim, outdated, and slightly worn, it was decently clean and worked just fine for a short overnight stay. DoubleTree has always been one of my favorite hotels and not just for the cookies, but because of the excellent customer service and cleanliness I've come to expect from Hilton properties. We were staying one night in Phoenix before our flight and decided to book through our Hilton Honors account at a DoubleTree. The location we originally wanted was full, so we chose the Tempe property instead. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing from the start. The woman at the front desk was very standoffish. When we asked about room rates, she quoted a much higher price than our Hilton Honors rate, so we decided to book online while standing in the lobby. When we went back to check in, she told us we had to wait. I also asked for one of the famous cookies, and she said they "weren't ready." She offered no welcome, no information about the hotel, and didn't ask any questions. If you're the face of a hotel, a warm and friendly attitude makes all the difference. Once we got to our room, things didn't improve. The property itself feels very old and outdated. The carpet was torn right at the entrance with sharp pieces sticking out, the AC was loud and squeaky, the headboard wasn't attached to the wall, and we heard a strange tapping sound all night long. We decided to give the property another chance by trying the on-site restaurant, Milagros. Unfortunately, both meals, the ribeye and fajitas the ribeye was raw (and made my husband sick later) and the steak on the fajitas were super tough and both were disappointing. The steaks were poorly cooked and lacked flavor. The one bright spot of the evening was Pedro, who apologized sincerely and provided 50% off my fajitas. His customer service was excellent and truly appreciated. Overall, this hotel does not reflect the quality or hospitality I've come to associate with DoubleTree. It's old, outdated, and lacks the warmth and care that usually make this brand so dependable. I truly hope management takes steps to refresh both the property and the guest experience. read more

My family and I stayed at this hotel last year while attending my daughter's graduation at Arizona State University. On the last full day of our trip, my daughter and I were at the pool while my 15-year-old son stayed behind in the room. During that time, a staff member used a key to enter our room without knocking or announcing themselves. My son was in bed when this happened, and it understandably frightened him. I reported the incident to management immediately. From my perspective, the concern was not handled with the level of seriousness I expected, given the circumstances. I also followed up with corporate, but did not feel the response addressed the issue adequately. I enjoyed my stay for a conference. Here are the features I used: Workout room: treadmills, one elliptical machine, one bicycle. Weights and kettles starting at 10 pounds. Some mats for stretching. Free headphones and relatively quiet though grunting men. Why do they do that? Event meals: honestly, really good food. Soft taco bar lunch was delicious. Chicken, fish and loads of hot and cold veggies for dinner were delicious! Common spaces: there is a lovely lounge on the main floor with a fireplace and pictographs. There's also a lovely courtyard. DO NO EAT THE BANQUET FOOD HERE! I have been to this property for many different business events/conventions. The food they serve is honestly the worst I have ever had and it's been that way for years. The food is inedible (see photo of what was supposed to be roast beef). The gray mush "green" beans were an embarrassment. The meat had a strange purple color and couldn't be cut with the knife. It resembled thick cut lunch meat but was worse. This is a low budget property and I understand that. That has to be the only reason groups continue to come back. You can provide low-cost food and make it edible. Rooms are totally outdated as well. For the price I paid, I was not impressed. I had limited options as I was on a conference trip, so I wish I could have found a hotel closer to the convention center to save on the transportation costs. A couple things to note- the "free" or "included" breakfast is only for the buffet, although they have other items. It's nothing to rave about. In addition, a tip is not included so overall I would skip out on the breakfast upgrade. The room was definitely on the outdated side and needed to be touched up in many areas. The carpet was pretty nasty and the bathroom needed an upgrade. Once again, not worth the price I paid. One last note- do they not offer cookies here? There are signs for these complimentary cookies everywhere and they even answer the phones by saying "a cookie is waiting for you" but I never once saw or smelled them over my 3 night stay. read more

So very creepy. I actually shoved the desk chair under the door knob to make sure no one broke in. So filthy dirty I placed all the available towels on the floor to avoid walking on the disgusting carpet. There was a camera sized hole in the bathroom wall that I plugged with tissue. Then, they fraudulently charged me for an additional room! One person one night and they charged me for two rooms. The manager, Benjamin Taylor, never seems to be there to correct this. If I didn't have a cancelled flight at 1:30 AM, I would not have come near this place. Avoid it if you can. read more

The hotel is easy to find and close to the airport. The lobby is welcoming and has a fabulous style. At check in on night one (I stayed twice--at the beginning and end of my vacation,) the representative was not friendly and not particularly helpful. The common areas of the hotel were clean and seemed safe. However, both rooms I had (on separate nights) needed a good cleaning and a long visit from the maintenance team. (I'm not sure I even want to know how the handprint got on the ceiling) The representative at check out for the first stay was quite friendly and very welcoming. The check in person on my second night was also friendly, even if he was a bit rushed. The rep at checkout for the second stay was nice and very succinct. I would likely stay again because it seems to be a safe area and it's an easy trip to/from the airport. I'll be honest, one of the reasons I booked here was for the cookies. There were no cookies offered. I also did not realize that the room doors are outside like a motel layout. For safety reasons, I would never book a hotel where my room door is accessible by anyone who wanted to just walk up. So if that's something important to you, just be aware of that. The room was clean but very old. The carpet should have been replaced long ago. The bottom sheet of the bed was not covering the bottom portion of the matress so I had to remake the bed or sleep with my legs on the bare mattress. The water pressure was pretty decent and I did not run out of hot water. Overall it was okay but not some place I'd choose to stay again for this price. read more

We've been to this hotel since before it was a Doubletree. We have always been very happy with the service, the rooms, and that nice pool. My wallet was missing and I thought I had left it on the reception/check in desk. When I asked about it the morning person at the desk wasn't the most pleasant person. Maybe she had a bad night or something else but a smile and not a snap would have been great. I lost my wallet, she didn't but being short and rude wasn't the way to handle it. The first words that pop into my head, Howard Johnsonisq. Everything about this hotel screams 1970s. From the rust in the bathtub to the weird design on the wall to the half done floors and very used decor, this is not up to Hilton standards. What rounds out this uncomfortable night, was the lack of air-conditioning. We were on the bottom floor and there was no way to open a window, and no matter how low you set the thermometer you will end up with a 72+ degrees room. The air temperature outside was in the 50s. That was ridiculous. I can only imagine how miserable this hotel is in the Phoenix summer. I would stay away based solely on that. Red Hot Moment overload. This place is so amazing. The workers are so friendly and accommodating. Some may not appreciate the outdoor entrances to rooms but I loved it. My son loved the fountain and the whole outside area. The rooms were maybe 7/10 stars on cleanliness The beds were super uncomfortable and we woke up in so much pain. They get 5 stars because the customer service blows you out of the water. We didn't make any complaints. They even texted us after we got in our room to see if everything was good (which I replied that it was). Free cookies and bottled water are a bonus . They also had toothbrushes, toothpaste and a pack n play for us since we didn't have our luggage due to an airline issue that put us there in the first place. read more

We stayed here before we flew out of Phoenix the following day. We were mainly just looking for a nice place to relax and rest before traveling the next day. Location - Great location in Tempe, AZ. We were very close the airport and a shuttle was provided to get you there. Great way to save some $$$. You are within walking distance of various fast food and fast casual places to eat. Rooms & Building - Rooms are comfortable and nicely decorated in modern desert tones and theming. I really love the building design and look, it was very modern looking yet homey and comfortable. Lots of palm trees scattered around property made it look like a desert oasis. Amenities - The pool was one of the main reasons I picked this place and it did not disappoint. It was clean, heated by the Arizona sun, and super relaxing to soak and splash around in. Lots of seating in the sun and there was even a hot tub to soak in after a long day of walking. Awesome. Food - The restaurant onsite was very good, served big portions, and was very reasonable. Don't forget the free Doubletree cookies! Staff - Everyone we met was professional and friendly. I stayed for three nights for a convention held on the premises. The location is incredibly convenient to Interstate 10 and several other thoroughfares. This DoubleTree seemed much larger than many I have been to. The buildings are three floors, all doors facing outside. This has the benefit of greater quiet outside; I barely heard any sounds from outdoors, even though the pool was being used not far away. However, this also meant full exposure to the weather. I visited over Labor Day Weekend and an extreme heat warning was in effect, monsoon storms in the vicinity. I was lucky in that my room was nearer to the conference center than the lobby. I heard other people complaining about the walking distance involved. I had a standard room with two queen beds. The room overall was pretty spacious with about five feet between the two beds, a large nightstand between them. There was a severe lack of plugs around the nightstand and on the desk, so I was glad I brought an additional plug unit for my devices. The top of the entertainment center was occupied by the TV and tiny coffee pot and ice bucket; beneath it were the mini fridge (very mini, but adequate), safe, and two drawers. The bathroom had nice space with a sink and counter, toilet, and a curtained shower. The shower was straightforward to use. An unexpected issue in my room: frequent gnats everywhere. I spotted them in different areas each day and often found them tickling my arms. The one noise issue I experienced was the in-room air conditioner. It needed to run almost constantly due to the heat, and it roared. I'm glad I brought earplugs! The fitness room was located at the far end of the complex, part of the conference hall but accessed by an exterior door. Walking there at 5am was kind of creepy since the parking lot is just adjacent. I hoped there were security guards around, but I never saw them. The exercise facility itself was good. It's a nice-sized room with a bike, three ellipticals, and three treadmills, plus weight equipment and pull up bars. Everything was clean. Towels were fully stocked. If my event were held here again, I'd stay at this hotel. read more

Horrible stay. First morning, early they were cutting down palm trees right out side my door. Couldn't relax. When I came back after working all day, there was dirt all in my entry way, dead cockroach in the bathroom, bugs crawling up the wall. Then late in the evening they had maintenance drilling out a lock next door again not able to relax. This is all besides the customer service is gone, no more free cookies or complementary water when you check in. Can't believe how bad this place has gotten. I used an overnight parking service for this hotel and was extremely happy. Upon entering the lobby at 3:15 am, I was greeted by a very professional young lady who assisted me with getting a hotel shuttle to the airport. Myself and another guest were on our way to the airport within 15 minutes (free shuttles leave every 30 min). They even had parking lot security walking around who greeted me as I was walking into the lobby. Upon my return, the shuttle picked me and a few more guest on time. Again... great driver and had us safely to the hotel in just a few minutes. This Doubletree hotel has great staff, well lite, and looked very clean! Next trip, I just may stay the night at the hotel so I won't have to get up so early. They have earned my business. read more

A Not so Welcome Stay! I hate giving this hotel such a low rating because the staff was awesome! The hotel itself so so, but this rating really pertains to the customer service line for Hilton. I booked this room and paid in advance because I didn't want my son to have any issues checking in by himself (at the time he was 18 y.o.). I booked two rooms connecting, as I've always done in the past, and went about my way. My son checked in at about 8pm and I checked in about 10pm that same night. Without dragging this on for too long, when I checked into the hotel my son had a room extremely far away from mine (it was not connecting). Now this wouldn't be a huge issue except, now I'm not getting what I "prepaid" for. Seems like if the connecting room were not available they wouldn't have let me book that particular room in the first place. The front desk manager was super kind and tried to be helpful but was unable to accommodate me due to the way I booked. What a nightmare! I ended up overpaying and not getting what I paid for! You would think they are used to out-of-towners bringing their kids to college for the first time... and thinking back on it, perhaps that's the problem. The Hilton is over it! The demanding parents, the "spoiled" adult children! Well Hilton Phoenix, I feel the same way. Looks like we both lost this time. I am a travel agent and I can't say I would recommend a stay here! My wife and I stayed here for our Honey Moon. The employees were amazing with great attitudes and so helpful. There was a wonderful gift bag in the room for us congratulating us on the marriage. The room was clean and in good shape. All towels and linens were clean and fresh both in the room and at the pool. The bar, restaurant, and pool area were wonderful and very accommodating and relaxing. Great common areas with couches and fire pits around. The only complaint I would have is the coffee that the hotel uses. And just from past experience that is with all Hilton Hotels. Their coffee is sub par at best. Besides that we will be using this hotel again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful place to stay in the valley. read more

Someone PEED IN THE ICE MACHINE at this location during our stay, and when we told the manager he was very rude and only cared about whether housekeeping knew. He did not offer an apology, and did not address the matter right away. The ice machine still smelled like pee throughout our stay. I had to ask to be comp'd and he only comp'd one night. Honestly this is such a major health violation I am truly shocked at how he responded. He was extremely patronizing and short with us. The rooms were also stuffy, and need updating. I have frequented this property since the '60's or '70's when Colonel Curtis Williams owned it as the Fiesta Inn, along with the venerated Other Place up on Lincoln Drive. It remains a premier hotel and location. The personnel are as good as anyone could hope for, including the effective, gracious banquet staff. I still wholeheartedly recommend it to visitors. I recently attended a Sunday meeting with the local Mensa group, GPM. The banquet tables' setup was very attractive, and the introductory salad was quite excellent - good enough that I nearly asked for another! A server-provided black pepper grinder would have been welcome. The dessert, perhaps a Southwestern take on tiramisu, was light & not too sweet. Everyone at my table enjoyed them. However, the main courses were huge disasters. Had I been a retail customer at a restaurant, I would have walked out when a replaced entree was as terrible as the first one delivered. There were two options: Steak or (vegetarian?) Pasta. The "pasta" was just spiralized veggies w/ some dressing, not pasta. I only observed my neighbor's "blah" disappointment, since I requested the "beef." In the old days at Pinnacle Peak Patio, if a tourist ordered a "well-done" T-bone, they'd bring out an old cowboy boot on a plate as a joke. Our "steaks" here were no "jokes!" None of us could either cut, chew, or swallow more than a few bites. No one asked us how the meal was going. I walked to the kitchen door and asked our courteous server for a replacement, explaining why. She cheerfully brought me another chunk of jerky, which I could not consume. I didn't want to try a third strike. This awful failure merits no more than 1 star, at best. I've planned & operated plenty of major conventions & dining events in both the military & civilian world. Had I been responsible for this fiasco, I would have refused to pay for the tab, citing breech of culinary contract. PHX Mensa deserves a partial refund. So if you have read my past reviews, you know, customer service is a big part of my experience. If you're selling alcohol, I should have a beer in my hand within a few minutes I walk into the place. I recently had a reservation here, it was for two nights, and I got stuck. Two days before my arrival I called to cancel the first night of the state since I was gonna be stuck out of town. I was told there was no problem, he said I'll see you on Wednesday, and I thought great everything's perfect. When I got in, I discovered that since I had made my reservations through an outside source, when I canceled the first night, they canceled both nights. Whatever, the clerk, Matthew was quite accommodating and was able to start looking for a new room for me. While answering questions, I inadvertently let an F bomb slip. I had been up for nearly 20 hours, I had just completed a 7 Hour Dr., and I immediately corrected myself and restated what I had said without the swearword. Mistakes happened, it wasn't like I yelled it across the hotel lobby or directed it in an aggressive manner, it was an adjective of the drive. A person who I assume was the shift leader named Kody immediately told me that I needed to keep my language respectful. Now like I said, I would've understood if I had been screaming like a Seattle Tweaker, but I needed a room and I apologized and we left it at that. However, that is where my attitude changed. I would think a hotel manager, and agent of hospitality would be able to recognize a weary and frustrated traveler who was on his final leg. I do not think that was the proper time to correct that person like he was some child in a schoolyard. So now I get to nitpick. The toilet was so small it felt like a child's toilet. My knees were literally around my ears. To add insult to injury , the water level in the toilet was high, if you are a man, you'll understand exactly where that's going. When I hopped in the shower, I went to adjust the showerhead and discovered that the pipe to the showerhead was completely loose and pulling free from the wall. That was exciting. The water is tepid, warm at fest. Was not happy about that either. I don't like taking cold showers. Room 309, you're going to want to take a look before someone causes a leak pulling the pipe out of the wall. The air conditioning was adequate, except with the bed placement, and where the air conditioner is, if you're on the far left bed, you will be frozen by morning. I booked the room there originally because they said they had a restaurant in the hotel. I don't like driving around at night time looking for a place to eat dinner in a strange city. However, the restaurants only open from I think 7 to 10 in the morning. So if you want dinner, you're out of luck. The stay was adequate but definitely NOT worth the nearly $300 price tag for an average hotel room and a rude, pretentious host. read more

The hotel has gone so downhill in the 10 plus years we've used them for our convention. Check in has been a nightmare for at least 3 years. Rooms are not available until an hour or more after check in time and reception is apathetic at best. The meals are substandard. Wilted lettuce, meager chef salad, frozen cheesecake, hard rolls, and salmon scraps. The chicken Marsala was dry and the sauce was a watery red liquid with olives, bell peppers, onion and barely and mushrooms. Everything was cold or lukewarm. The building is kind of a non-traditional looking Hilton property but it's part of what made me curious. The design appears to be 60's style with an updated look. It's actually kind of interesting. The pool area was actually very enjoyable and was a big selling point when looking online. My room had a very very strong odor of cleaning products and I couldn't open the window to help air it out. I stopped by the front desk to ask for some assistance or a room change and was told "someone will be there to assist" which of course never happened. Overall this is a nice property that I would probably visit again. The pool was nice and it's easy to find. With a little better maintenance (paint/windows that operated properly) it could be a really nice property. The in house bar was, about what you would expect from a hotel bar. I would definitely recommend eating elsewhere. read more

However they don't have enough employees to meet the needs of ALL guests. The conference I was at had 150+ women. Only one shuttle bus to the airport. I waited an hour and a half for what turned out to be a fifteen minute drive. Only 2 waitress for "free" breakfast buffet for the entire hotel. ALSO NOT ACCESSIBLE FOR WHEELCHAIRS. Which means if you are in a wheelchair you have to get someone else to get it. And oh yeah, they lie about their reviews on their website. read more

It was in a very poor state of maintenance and as you can see the dark colors dont add beauty to the already worn out setting. -Furniture in poor shape - Bathroom door wont close. -Carpet was out dated and unsightly. I also get to stay at hotels like this where there's blood on the sheets and pipes coming from the wall. Complementary lotion was absent. Crack under the door where you could see daylight coming through which means bugs are too. Outdoor walkways where a female can feel afraid to walk to her room because it's a block from the lobby. I was VERY uncomfortable. Hilton: please reconsider what you consider a Hilton property. This place is on par with a low end motel. read more

The room was comfortable definitely not the cleanest but I can see past that since the pillows were comfortable and sheets were clean. we were only staying one night and driving through town. Now the thing that makes me give a one star review is that we check in at 1pm so early check in because I got sun sick and needed to rest. I hear pounding on the door I disregard as maybe someone trying to get at the wrong door. The second pounding started at 1am and someone was opening on door, they clearly had a key and thank god we latched the extra lock. We're in a city we're unfamiliar with and this made us extremely uneasy. We tell the front desk at check out and her answer was I'll have engineering look into that and give you a call, sorry. It's now two days later we've driven all around Arizona with no call and a weird apology. For a Hilton hotel I'm deeply disappointed. read more

I didn't have a problem with the staff but if I'm being honest I got a mediocre room. Immediately there was this body oder smell to it and the floorboards were very dirty and the bathroom also had dirty floors. While spacious it had chipped wallpaper. Beddings had some makeup marks and stains on it. It didn't feel too clean. Overall yes, the room was spacious enough for four people. I didn't feel cluttered up and the staff were decent. When booking the Doubletree in Phoenix I was looking for something within the Hilton brand that was convenient to our route for an overnight stay during the trip we were making. At check-in I had a few questions regarding the restaurant hours and menu, the pool, etc. The employee checking me in was on the phone the majority of the time and I felt like he was too busy to answer any questions. Our room was so far away it was a hike from the main lobby to it. I did not understand why we would have been in a room so far away as this hotel was not fully booked and the majority of the rooms around us had the Lysol sanitizing sticker untouched on all of the doors. The stairwell by our room you could not use as the tree branches were overgrown covering the majority of the stairwell. The room was old. Outdated, broken window screen, one plug that could be used for a three prong (laptop/multiple charger/etc), and the cleanliness was not there. Small stains on carpet, hair on the back of toilet and in the bath tub, tile pieces cracked/missing. I was exhausted from a long day of travel and after arriving here I couldn't wait to get back on the road. I love Hilton and have had some really great hotel experiences as a Gold member, but this one just completely missed the mark. read more
