I'm not a massive fan of Hilton hotels. In my experiences they are pretty old-fashioned and whilst they aren't bad, they aren't great, so I guess a safe bet if you want something dependable.
We stayed here for one night - a good room rate and dinner as part of a deal - and it's safe to say there was nothing that would change my opinion. The room was ok, but lacked more than two powerpoints, was a little run down with some loose fittings here and there, and the decor was kinda dated feeling. Underwhelming.
We had dinner in the restaurant - a Nick Nairn menu no less - and the food was ok/edible. I certainly didn't find that having a celebrity chef endorse things made much of a difference but then, does it ever?
I started with an old school classic - prawn cocktail - served in a round tumbler with some "Hass Avocado" (I'm not sure what the significance of this variety of is as it was, by all accounts, the same as any other avocado I've ever eaten). It was tasty, nice atlantic prawns that looked more like small crayfish in colour, and a nice sauce that wasn't too overpowering.
My main course was pork escalopes with a nice cider gravy and some veg. It wasn't described that way on the menu but I've given up trying to remember which ridiculous name the potatoes had (sliced by unicorn horn and sauteed on a bed of garlic petals or something). Dear Mr.Nairn, impressive us with the food, not the description!
In saying that, it was very tasty, the cider gravy was rich and thick and definitely the star of the show!
Dessert followed and was unremarkable. That's the best I can say about it.
The staff were present, and prompt, without being massively friendly and welcoming; I think the word I should use here is efficient, yes, they were efficient. So after we had efficiently finished our meal, we retired to the bar for a drink. I've had worse meals, but I think this one marked the biggest gap between expectation and delivery.
Breakfast the next morning was the, now standard, buffet affair, with all the expected dishes. Left out in the air and drying out pastries, left under hot plate and over cooked sausages, watery scrambled eggs, you get the picture.
This all sounds very negative, and I guess that's my beef with the entire Hilton brand. It pitches itself as upper-class (or I guess upper-middle class) and is popular enough that it doesn't really need to try much harder than that. So they don't. They are dependable, they are mostly ok, sometimes good, but never disastrously bad.
However I'd much rather stay at a place that is trying to be epic and awesome, and have it fail, than stay at another Hilton that bumbles along on past reputations. Of course, at some point I will stay in another HIlton but my expectation will remain the same. I will be underwhelmed but not really bothered enough by the experience to get more than mildly annoyed. read more
